Overview
• The impact of the Industrial Revolution and the evolution of technology in the 1800s gave designers the ability to construct buildings to greater heights—more than ever before.
• The construction of new “skyscrapers’’ would not have been possible without advancements in elevator lift technology.

Theory of Operation of an Elevator Lift System • An elevator lift system consists of several
components and subsystems that work together to safely transport passengers within a building structure.
• The elevator car secures passengers for transportation. An electric motor is used to provide power to lift and lower the car.

Theory of Operation of an Elevator Lift System (continued) • A cable system connects to the car on one end
and to a set of counter weights on the other end—this balances the passenger load.
• The braking system allows the car to stop between floors and is an important safety feature on all elevators.
• Computerized control systems prioritize and sequence passenger requests and give passengers the ability to control the operation of each elevator car.
