Introduction

The contents of this collection range from Rogers Fence Company, founded 1887 to the closingof William Bayley Company in 1998.

The collection consists of 18 Hollinger boxes.

The collection is divided into 10 series consisting of 731 files, 105 books and binders, and 2000+photographs.

Biography*

* This is a partial history of the Bayley Company as recollected by Mr. Robert Bayley until thecompany sold in 1964.

In 1875 William Bayley at the invitation of his brother-in-law, James Dicus, came to starta new life in Springfield, Ohio from Wilmington, Delaware. At that time, a financial panic wasgripping the East coast while in comparison Springfield was an agricultural boomtown producinga wide array of agricultural products. He landed a job at the Whiteley Reaper Company andperfected a failing Company product, a knotter that tied up wheat in bundles as it was harvested.Yet that did no reverse the company fortune when it went bankrupt in 1887, leaving WilliamBayley once again on his own resources.

In partnership with his brother-in-law, William Bayley acquired the Rogers IronCompany which made a wide variety of iron fences and lawn mowers. By 1890, he controlledthe company and renamed it The William Bayley Company. Though a self-taught man with noformal college education and an apprenticeship in Wilmington, he was by trade a mechanicalengineer. He made his company an experimental iron works shop by producing whatever heinvented. In time, he has held more than 100 patents on inventions ranging from a gas engine totobacco cutters.

In 1913, he built his first metal window in a building where the Huntington NationalBank downtown in now located. He expanded into house casement windows but did not staylong. The company’s main focus became institutional buildings such as schools, prisons,hospitals, and government office buildings. By 1920, the company started exporting metalwindows abroad from China, Canada, and Mexico. The company tried diversification byacquiring an almost defunct manufacturing company of agricultural products. The E.W. RossCompany which made metal silos and corn blowers became a division of the William BayleyCompany.

By the 1930s the company learned how to weld aluminum and started making aluminumwindows for the next 25 years. They were durable and could last forever since the outside partof the aluminum window oxidizes and forms a protective coating to the secondary layer. Thecompany’s primary specialty became prison windows which provided the bulk of its businesseven to this day. A company truck line was formed in 1946 to solely transport their products.

The William Bayley Company was sold in September 1964 to a New York businessmanWalter Weisman. The company name was kept intact. Four years after its acquisition from theBayley family, the new owner died, leaving the company to his estate and was sold another fouryears later to the present owner, a Lebanese businessman living in Switzerland. Again thecompany name was kept.

The growth of the William Bayley Company was a tribute to the founder’s hard work andVictorian values that was kept going by his sons in an ever changing world. The company wasnever a big profit business since it had to go after jobs that had great volumes yet acquired withlow bids, hence, the margin of profit was not great. Yet the Bayley family made a good livingbut were not rich by high standards.

Scope and Content

The collection was donated soon after the plant closed in 1998.

While this is by no means a complete collection, it should give some idea of the companyand its products through the years.

After going through the photos it was realized that the photos should be divided intopictures of buildings and pictures of product parts; as this was decided later, there are someproduct parts mixed in amongst the building photos.
