Principal’s WelcomeThetutorialsystem,inallitsglories,featuresmuchinthiseditionof theMagazine. From recollections of past students to firstimpressionsof newlyappointedtutors,thereisaconstantthreadrunningthroughthisissue.Inthemidstof this,theEditorssoberlywarnof thethreatstothefutureof thetutorialsystemandaskforcontributionstotheCollege’scollectivememorybankof thepartthattutorialsplayedinyourliveswhenyouwerehere.

Thisisnotasimpleexerciseinnostalgia.ItisbecausetheUniversityneedstobeabletocontinuetojustifytothepowers-that-betheadditional costs of teaching at Oxford. Recent complex discussions intheUniversityabouthowthefinancialcakewillbesharedarounditsconstituentpartshavehighlightedthegrosslyinadequatefundingfromGovernmentthatwegetforteaching.Foreveryundergraduate

taught, theUniversity losessome£6000andtheproblemwill remainevenwiththeadvent, thisyear,of top-up-fees.Thesystemonlykeepsgoingthroughacomplicatedsystemof cross-subsidy,which,clearly,isunsustainable.Howmuchlongercanthetutorialsystem,aswenowknowit,survive?ItwouldbeunwisetolooktotheGovernmentforsalvation,soMansfield,likeallcolleges,mustturntoitsalumniandfriendstogivesupport.Wehaveestablishedsmallendowmentpotsforeachof ourexistingFellowshipsandanycontributions,of whateversize,willhelptosecureourtutorialpostsforthefuture.

Itisoftensaidthat,becausethesumsof moneyavailableforresearcharesomuchgreaterthanforteaching,teachingskillsareundervaluedthesedaysinacademe.If so,thenaninitiativeof theOxfordLearningInstituteisgoingsomewaytoredressthebalance.Iamdelightedtosaythatfourof ourFellows,DrJanetDyson(Maths),DrChrisMartin(Engineering),ProfessorStephenBlundell(Physics)andProfessorJonChapman(Maths)havereceivedawardsfortheirteachingexcellence.Asthiswasjustthefirstyearof theschemeandnotalldepartmentsparticipated,Iconfidentlyexpecttobereportingthesuccessof otherMansfieldtutorsinfutureyears.

Thereisatendencytothinkof tutorsonlyintermsof theirteachingbutthatistoignorethevasthinterlandof researchandscholarshipthatunderpinstheirpedagogicalprowess.Thelistof researchaccoladesawardedtoMansfieldtutorsislongandtherecentawardtoDrRosBallaster(English)of theprestigiousRoseMaryCrawshayPrize2006forEnglishLiteraturebytheBritishAcademyisbutthelatestinthelist.Ros’sprize-winningbookFabulous Orients: Fictions of the East in England 1662-1785 wasfeaturedinapreviousissueof thisMagazine.TheBritishAcademyhasalsohonouredanotherof ourFellows,ProfessorRobertAdams,byelectinghimtotheirFellowship.

Thesenotableawardspresentanacademicpinnacletowhichournewestmembersof academicstaff mayonedayaspire.DrMary-AnnLundjoinedusthisyearasJuniorResearchFellow(English)andDirectorof Mansfield’sVisitingStudentProgramme.DrsFrancescaMarchettiandJoanneRowlandarenon-stipendiaryJuniorResearchFellowsinPhysicsandEgyptianArcheologyrespectivelyandDrHelenLaceyisastipendiarylecturerinHistorywhoisalreadymakinghermarkasatutor.

Sowelcometothemallandfloreat thetutorialsystem!

InwritingthisafewdaysafterthetriennialMansfieldCollegeBallI’mpleasedtobeabletoseefrommywindowthecontinuedphysicalpresenceof aCollegeonwhichtoreport.TheJCRPresidentisnowlegallyobligedtoundertakea‘specialeventsriskassessment’

fortheBall.Heobviouslydidagoodjob,astheBallappearstohavebeenanextremelysuccessfuloccasionwithverylittleinthewayof collateraldamage.

Thisisalsothetimeof yearwhereallcollegeshavetosubmittheirauditedaccountstotheUniversity.Mansfieldremainsopen,friendly,democratic(thingsyoucan’tseeintheaccounts)andrelativelypoor(somethingyoucan)butitisencouragingtoseethatthefiguresaremovingintherightdirection.Wecontinuetoreceivesignificantannualgrantsfromthe‘RobinHood’exercisewhichredistributesfundsforendowmentpurposesfromtherichertothepoorerColleges,andourconferenceandeventstradeisverybuoyantwithadoublingof incomeoverthelastfouryears,andarecord15weddingsand2baptismstakingplaceduring2006.(Seethe opposite page of this issue for more information)

Asourfinanceshaveimproved,togetherwiththecontinuingandessentialsupportfromfundraisingactivities,wehavebuiltnewstudentaccommodation,ethernettedallstudentrooms,providedafireexitfortheJCRtoallowthebigeventstocontinuethere,installednewCCTVandelectronickeyaccessandembarkedonarollingprogrammeof redecorationandrefurbishmentof theolderstudentroomsandalsoof theCollegebar.Thelist,of course,of newthingsthatneeddoingisalwaysgrowing,butmanypeoplehavecommentedonhowmuchbettertheCollegeanditsgroundsislooking,withthenextbigprojectbeingamakeoverfortheQuadrangleandroadwaysurfaces.

Lookingupfromthedaytodaybusinessof theCollegeweseeanumberof potentiallysignificantchangesonthehorizon.Wearenow,alongwithallcolleges,havingtothinkthroughtheimplicationsof theproposalsforanewwayof fundingcolleges(knownastheJointResourceAllocationMethodologyorJRAMforshort.)Essentially,insteadof receivinganalmostidenticallumpsumforeachstudentpassedontouseveryyearbytheUniversity,wewillinfuturebereceivingdifferentamountsdependingonthesubjecttaught,whetherastudentisfromtheEUorelsewhere,andanewstreamof fundingwhichforthefirsttimegivescollegesashareof theresearchincomecomingintotheUniversity.Theseareearlydaysintermsof fullyunderstandingtheimplicationsforMansfield,butthereisnodoubtthatitwillrequireallcollegestoreviewwhethersomeimportantstructuralchangesmaybeneededinordertogetthebestdealoutof thesenewwaysof receivingfundingviatheUniversity.BeyondthatwealsohavedebatesonthefuturegovernancearrangementsfortheUniversityand,inparallelwiththis,significantchangestocharitylawanditsapplicationtocolleges,whichwillalsoaffectthewayinwhichweconductourbusinessandmanageourselves.Howmuchanyof thesechangesfromonhighactuallyincreaseordecreasethechancesof repairingtheQuadranglepotholesremainstobeseen,butasalwaysweliveinhope.

Events in 2006OureventsoverthesummerbeganwithaGaudyforallthosewhomatriculatedinandbefore1965.WewereblessedwithsuperbweatherandwereabletoenjoyourchampagneinthesunbeforedinnerinHall.Aboutfiftyof usgatheredforthisdelightfulevening,anditwasarealpleasuretohearsomanyfondmemoriesbeingexchanged,seeoldfriendshipsrekindledand,insomecases,tohearalifetimeof newsandstoriesbeingrecounted.

Followinglastyear’ssuccessfulformula,theGaudywasfollowedontheSundaybyourSummerGardenParty. Thiswasanenjoyableafternoonof food,drinkandallthingsMansfield.Wewereextremelyluckywiththeweather,andabouttwohundredandtwentyalumniandfriendsof theCollegeenjoyedadayof festivitiesintheQuad,accompaniedonceagainbymusicfrom ‘TheNoisyOysters’. Before theafternoondrewtoaclosewithtea,wewereabletohearMansfieldFellowHelenMargetts,Professorof SocietyandtheInternetattheOxfordInternetInstitute,gavealectureon‘GovernmentsandCitizensin the Digital Age’ in the cooler surroundings of the Chapel .

Thefirstof ourautumneventswastheFifthLondonDrinksEvening at The Counting House in Cornhill on 21stSeptember.Approximately fifty alumni, from awide variety of yeargroupsandsubjects,joinedusinthebar’sGalleryRoomforan eveningof socializing, networking and catching up in arelaxed atmosphere.

Less than aweek later,weheld theNinthAnnualParents’Dinner.Fiftysevengatheredforachampagnereceptionandawonderfulfour-coursedinnerinHall.Forsomeof ourguests,thiswastheirfirstMansfieldevent(thefirstof many,wehope)

andtheywereabletomeetthePrincipal,anumberof Fellows,andotherparentswhoenjoythiseventeachyear.Theeveningisanexcellentopportunityforparentstomeetotherswhosechildrenhavefollowedsimilarcourses.

WehavetwoeventstolookforwardtoinDecember:onthe9th,ourGaudyforMatriculationYears1985-1990andonthe12th,ourfirstVarsityMatcheventwithalumni,parentsandfriendsatTwickenham.LookingforwardtoMarch2007,therewillbetheAnnualMansfieldAssociationDinneronthe17th and,lateroninthemonth,DrDonaldSykeswillbehostingareuniondinnerinNewYork-furtherdetailswillbeavailableonthewebsiteshortly.PleaserefertotheCalendaratthebackof the Magazine for details of our other forthcoming events, orcontacttheDevelopmentOfficeforfurtherdetails.

The last sixmonths,myfirst atMansfield, havebeen veryexcitingaswehavehadsomewonderfuleventswhichhavemade this an especiallymemorable time forme. I shouldparticularlyliketothankAnuDawsonforallherkindnessandguidanceduringmyfirstcoupleof monthsintheDevelopmentOffice.

BornjustoutsideLeeds,Iwenttoacomprehensiveschoolinthetownof Featherstone–famedforitsrugbyleagueteamandattheheartof theWestYorkshirecoalfield.IwasanundergraduateinOxford,atExeterCollege,andgraduatedin1990withadegreeinPPP(notPPE,buttheonethatwedon’tofferatMansfield,whereyouonlyeverdotwoof thethreePs,Philosophy,PsychologyandPhysiology).MyAlevelswereinMaths,Physics,andChemistryandIoriginallyappliedtodoengineeringatuniversity,thoughnottoOxfordbecauseIwasafraidIwouldnotgetin.However,adamascenemomentduringatriptoDurhamforinterviewledtomypullingoutof UCCA(asUCASwasthenknown)andabandoningmyfatetowhoknewwhat.ThefollowingsummerIgotmyresultsandpluckedupthecouragetoapplytoOxford.Choosingasubject(Ididn’tchooseacollege,butapplied‘open’)wasalittletrickynowthatInolongerwantedtobeanengineer.However,I’dreadbooksthatwereregularlyadvertisedonthebackas‘philosophical’bypeoplelikeAlbertCamus,Jean-PaulSartreandHermannHesse,and,dareIadmitit,RobertPirsig’sZen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,soIthoughtitwouldbeinterestingtoseewhatphilosophywasreallyabout.

Luckily,Itooktophilosophy(unlikepsychology)immediatelyandneverlookedback(moreorless).AftergraduatingIwentbacktoLeedsanddidanMA.AfterthatItriedmyhandatteachertrainingbut,missingphilosophy,ItookwhatinretrospectseemslikeabigleapandmovedtoNewJerseytodomyPhD.Sixyearslater(aprettystandardtimetobedoingaPhDoverthere)IgotmyfirstjobinNewOrleanswhereItaughtatTulaneUniversityforfiveyears.

IreturnedtoOxfordin2003.Gettingajobherewasgenuinelyadreamcometrue.Likesomany,Iwas,andstillam,strangelyintoxicatedbythisoddlittlecityanditsuniversity;andIhavenotbeendisappointed.Theopportunitytobeontheothersideof thetutorialsystemhasbeenarealpleasure,andeye-opener.Inparticular,I’verelishedthecloseinteractionwithstudentsasateacher,whichwaslargelyabsentintheUScontextsinwhichIworked.

Myresearchlifeiscentredon17thcenturyphilosophy.Itrytounderstandthegrandiosephilosophicalsystemsof dead,whitemenof thetimewhowerestrugglingtocometogripswiththeclashbetweentheadventof thenewmathematicalsciencesandolderworldviewsdominatedbyChristianizedversionsof AncientGreekphilosophy.Inparticular,Ifocusontheworkof GottfriedWilhelmLeibniz,whoisperhapsbestknownasco-inventor/discoverof thecalculusandforthefeudwithNewtonandhissupportersoverwhoactuallydidthisfirst.Heisalsotheauthorof oneof thestrangestaccountsof thenatureof realityeverdevised.Accordingtothissystem,theentiretyof thingsconsistsof aninfinitenumberof unextended,soul-likeentitiesor‘monads’ashecalledthem;someof which,suchasusandotheranimals,areconsciousandreasonablyclever;someof which,suchasangelsandGod,aresimilarlyconsciousandmuchcleverer;andsomeof whicharereallyquitestupidandbarelyhaveanyawarenessatall.OnmyfirstencounterwiththeseclaimsIwasamazedthatanyonecouldpossiblybelievethem.I’vespentthelast12yearsorsotryingtoworkoutwhyandexpecttocontinuetodosoforalongtimetocome.Likeanunendingjigsawpuzzle,thisisaconstantsourceof playfulfrustrationandeventheoccasionalsuccess!

IbecameaUniversityLecturerintheDepartmentof StatisticsandaFellowatMansfieldinSeptember2005andI’veverymuchenjoyedmyfirstyear.EveryonehasbeenamazinglywelcomingandmyMathscolleagueshavebeenincrediblysupportiveandpatientwithmyendlessquestionsasI’veadaptedtoteachingProbabilityandStatisticsinthetutorialsystem.

Iwasborninthecityof ChichesterinWestSussexbutasyoumighthaveguessed frommyname,my father is Italian and Ihave strong ties tomyfamily that still live in Italy. I didA-levels inMathematics, Statistics andChemistryatanFECollegeinChichesterandthenwentontostudyMathsattheUniversityof Exeter.WhenIwenttoUniversityallIwantedtodowasbecomeaprofessionalmountainbikerandwasn’tveryinterestedinMathsatall.Gradually,IbecamequitefascinatedbyMathsandfoundmyself spendingmoreandmoreof mytimestudyingandlessandlesstimeonmybike!Bytheendof mythirdyearandafteraspelldoingasummerresearchproject,IhadprettymuchdecidedtodoaPhDbutwantedtospreadmywingsabitfirst.IspentayeardoingaPGCEinMathsteachingandthensignedupasaVSOvolunteer.InSeptember1995IwaspostedtoasecondaryschoolinruralTanzaniatoteachA-levelMaths.

AsyoumightimaginethingswereabitdifferenttoteachinginaUKsecondaryschool.Intheclassroommyproblemschangedfromgettingmystudentstosettledown,stopchattingandworktogettingthemtosayanythingatall!Thestudentswereusedtosimplycopyingwhattheteacherwroteontheboardandaskingquestionswastakentosuggesttheteacher’snoteswereinsomewayinadequate.

It took awhile to get used to the new culture,languageandworkingconditions,butafterawhileIwashookedandsignedupforanextrayearsoastotakeanewbatchof studentsthroughtheentiretwoyearcourse.Oneof themostrewardingthingswedidwastorenovatetheschoollibrarywhichhadfallenintomisuse.Ittookagestoclassifyallof thebooksandsetupanefficientandsecuresystemforlendingbutonceitwasupandrunningitbecameverypopularwiththestudents.

OverallitwasanamazingexperienceandsomethingIwouldnothesitatetorecommend.Idon’thavethespaceheretodoitjusticebutIkeeplotsof photosaboutmytimeinTanzaniaonmywebsiteforthosewhomaybeinterested.

In1998IcametoOxfordtostudyforaDPhilinStatistics.Iworkedondevelopingstatisticalmethods to detect areas of thebrain that areactivated during fMRI experiments. These datasets are very large and the signal can bewellhiddenwithin.Searchingforaneedleinahaystackisoneanalogyoftenusedtodescribethis analysis and is especiallyhard as thedataquality from the scanners can vary fromdaytoday.DespitethisIthinkwewerereasonablysuccessfulwiththemethodswedevelopedandIcertainlylearntanincredibleamountfrommysupervisor during that time. During this time I decidedI’dprettymuchhadenoughof gettingcoveredinmudonmymountainbikeandstarteddabblinginlongdistanceroadbikeevents.

IthenstayedinOxfordtodoapost-doconadifferentneedle-in-haystackprobleminGenetics.This focussed on detecting the signal of disease genes in datasets that consist of the genetic code of peoplewithandwithoutagivendisease.Themixof developingstatisticalmethodologyatthesametimeaslearningabouttheprocessesthatshapeandareinfluencedbyourgeneticcodeisperfectforme.I’mverymuchenjoyingsettingupmyownresearchgroupinthisarea.AsIwritethisweareonlydaysawayfromgettingourhandsonthefirstdatafromapowerfulstudyaimedatdetectingthediseasegenesfrom7majordiseases.Hopefully,bythetimethisisinprintwe’llhavefoundseveraldiseasegenes!

Finally,inthelastfewyearsImadethechangeto‘roadie’(tothegreatdisapprovalof mymountainbiking friends) andusually spendmostof myweekends training and racingmy road bikesomewhereinOxfordshireorbeyond.If onlyIhadn’tgothookedonMathsImightbeworldchampionbynow!

BeforecomingtoOxfordinJanuary2004,IwasaResearchFellowinpolitics,firstattheUniversityof Halle-WittenbergandlatertheUniversityof Hagen,bothinGermany.HavinglivedinFranceandtheUSA,Ialwayswantedtospendsometimeabroadagain,butwasundecidedwhereIwantedtogo.HavingspentsometimeinLondontoconductinterviewsformypost-docresearch(myfirstvisittoBritain),thedestinationwasclear:IhadsetmyheartonEngland!WhenonlyafewmonthslatertheGermanAcademicExchangeService(DAAD)advertisedthejobaslecturerinGermanPoliticsatOxfordUniversityIappliedimmediately.TheDAADisapublicly-fundedbutindependentorganisationof highereducationinstitutionsinGermanypromotinginternationalacademicexchangesforstudentsandfaculty(www.daad.de).Currently,therearemorethan60youngGermanacademicsworkingasDAADlecturersinGreatBritainandIrelandteachingGermanasaforeignlanguage,butalsoothersubjects,suchasGermanLiterature,Politics,HistoryorLaw.TheDAADalsosupportsBritishstudentswhowanttospendsometimeinGermany.Thus,anyoneinterestedinastayinGermany,whethertostudyataUniversityortobrushupyourGerman,ismorethanwelcometocontactme.

WhenItookupmypostinJanuary,PeterPulzer,oneof themembersof myinterviewpanel,wrotemealovelyandwarmletterof welcome,hopingIwould‘settleinquicklyandsmoothlyandnotfeeltoooverwhelmedbyourstrangeways’.Itwasafairwarning.WithinthefirstweekIwasconfrontedwithabewilderingarrayof newrules,committees,panels,teachingprovisions,dresscodessuchasgownandsubfusc,and,inparticular,withtheBritishloveformystifyingacronymssuchasSCR,GB,APC,GJCC,orRAE(myfavouritebeingCPLAAA).Iwas,however,greatlycomfortedbythefactthateveryoneassuredmethatitwould‘takeatleast10yearsanywaytounderstandatleastthebarebasicsaboutOxford’.ThatIdidgetsomeof thebasicsrightmorequicklythanthatisdefinitelyduetoMichaelFreedenandDavidLeopold,whohavebothbeenpatientlyansweringallof mysillyquestionsabouttutorialteaching,admissions,examsandmore.Thankssomuchtobothof you!

ComingtoOxfordhasonceagaindemonstratedwhatIloveabouttheEuropeanproject.GivingEUcitizenstheopportunitytomovetoanothermemberstateandtakeupworkwithoutbeinglegallyconsideredanimmigrant(I’mevenallowedtovoteinlocalandEuropeanelections)isoneof thegreatachievementsof theEU.ButalthoughI’mastrongsupporterof EUintegrationasapoliticalproject,I’mnotuncriticalof theUnion.InmyresearchI’mkeenlyinterestedinthequestionof democraticlegitimacyof theEU.Whenspeakingof theEU,manypeoplethinkonlyabouttheseeminglyremoteinstitutionsattheEuropeanlevel,suchastheEuropeanParliamentortheEuropeanCommission.However,decision-makingintheEUinvolvesthenationalandeventheregionallevelaswell.ThisiswhypoliticalscientistsdescribetheEUasamultilevelsystemof governance,oneinwhichdecisions and policies are made in an intricate net of institutions and actors across the different levels of government. When it comestothedemocraticlegitimacyof decision-makinginthesystem,IamthereforenotsomuchinterestedintheEuropean

institutionsthemselves,butratherinhowdomesticinstitutionsandactorsadapttothissystemof governanceandhowthisaffectsthedemocraticlegitimacyof nationalpolicymaking.

Mycurrentresearch,forexample,focusesontheroleof nationalparliamentsintheEuropeanUnion,whichhasbecomeoneof themostsalientissuesinthedebateonthedemocraticlegitimacyof theEUoverthelastyears.Onestrandof theliteratureonthistopicseestheprocessof Europeanintegrationdrivingyetanothernailintothecoffinof nationallegislaturesasmoreandmorepolicyareasarebeingtransferredtotheEUlevel.Asaconsequence,nationalparliamentswereandstillarelosingagrowingpartof theirlegislativesovereigntywhilenationalexecutivesarestrengthenedduetotheirdirectinvolvementinEuropeanpolicy-making.Nationalparliamentsseemtohavebeen‘leftbehindintherush’.Otherstudieschallengedthis‘de-parliamentarisationthesis’anddemonstratedthat‘backbenchershavelearnttofightback’.Yet,themajorityof thesestudiesstillpaintarathergloomypicturebypointingoutthatnationalparliamentsmayhaveacquiredmoreorlessfar-reachinginstitutionalscrutinyandparticipationrightsinEUaffairs,butusuallymakenooronlylittleeffectiveuseof them.IwasthereforeinterestedwhyMPsdidn’tusetheirformalrightsandwhethertheydevelopedmoreinformalstrategiesinsteadtoinfluenceEUpoliciesandtocontroltheirgovernments.Mycomparativeanalysisof theBritishHouseof Commons,theDanishFolketingandtheGermanBundestaghasshownthatMPsdoindeeddevelopsuchstrategies,andthatthedifferenttypesof this‘strategicEuropeanisation’,clearlyinfluencedbytherespectiveinstitutionalcontextof theparliamentarysystem,havequitedifferentandsometimesevennegativeeffectsintermsof democraticlegitimacy.

Inallof mypastresearchprojects,Ihavefoundthatproblemsof democraticlegitimacymoreoftenthannotactuallyarisewithindomesticratherthanEuropeaninstitutionsandprocesses.Thus,weshouldbecarefulaboutquicklyblamingsomeallegedEuropeansuperstateorasingleinstitutionliketheEuropeanCommissionforthelackof democraticlegitimacy.Manyof theEU’sdemocraticproblemsaregenuinelyhomemade.

Christianswithleft-winginclinationshavealwaysseentheBible,andparticularlytheOldTestament,assupportingapoliticaloptionforthepoor.ButsomeradicalscholarsrecentlyhavebeguntoquestionwhethertheOldTestamentreallysupportsmodernideasof socialjustice.Afterall,onlyasmalleliteinthosedaysknewhowtoreadandwrite,anditmusthavebeenwrittenbythem.Wouldtheynotbelikelytofavourtheirowninterestsinwhattheywroteaboutrichandpoor?

Mybook,publishedlastMay,triestosettlethisargumentbytakingacarefullookatanumberof textsintheOldTestamentonthesubjectof relationsbetweenclasses.Itviewsthemasexpressionsof particularpointsof viewinconcretesocialsituations.ItisadmittedlynoteasywithourveryfragmentaryinformationtoplaceOldTestamenttextsagainstprecisesocialbackgrounds;butIhavetriedtodothis,withashortchaptertestingvariousproposedmodelsof classformationinancientIsraelandJudah.WhatIdidnotinitiallyexpectwastofindhowimportanttherelationshipof patronagewas,andhoweasilypatronscouldabuseit.

Ithengoontolookattheprophets’attackonsocialinjustice,withparticularattentiontoAmos;thenvarioustextswhich,asIseeit,focusontherelationshipbetweenpatronandclient;thosewhichhighlightthedutyof thekingtoprotectthepoor,centrallyPsalm72;andthoseintheProphetsandtheLawwhichsketchsomefeaturesof ajustsociety.

Allof thesetexts,aseveryreaderisaware,areconcernedthatthepoorshouldbelookedafterandnotexploited.Butitisalsotrue,asIhaveshown,thattheymostlytakeforgrantedthecurrentorderof society:‘thepooryouwillalwayshavewithyou’.Thecurrentsocialordercanbeseenasbenignif youbelieve,asthewritersdo,inacosmicorderwhichinthelongrunpunishesthosewhooppressthepoor.Buttheyalsocontainideas,suchasthebrotherhoodof allIsraelites,whichhave the potential to undermine these assumptions.

Iconcludethatalthoughthesetextsarerootedintheirowntimeanditsassumptions,thereisoneimportantthingtheystillhavetoteachus:thatsocialrelationshipsaremoralrelationshipsandmustbeguidedbymoralnorms.

Astronomy, Philosophy and Faith isfromG.K.Chesterton,theliteraryvirtuosoandRomanCatholicconvertof thepre-1939era.Hecautionedthat“whenmenceasetobelieveinGod,theydonotbelieveinnothing,theybelieveinanything”. Sohowmightthegreatreligionscomemoreintoharmonywithoneanotherandwithcosmology?Couldsuchconflationnurtureasenseof meaningandfulfilmentmoreprofoundthanwhatmanytodayexperience?Isthisachievable,seeingthatweapparentlylivewithinacosmos,auniverseof a100billionbillionstars? Onehassaid“fulfilment”bydintof takingissuewiththemodishaspirationto“happiness”interpretedasegocentricconsumerism.Engaging the Cosmosaddressesthisaswellasotherissuescurrentlyintheframe.AmongthemareConsciousness;itscosmicpurpose;itsrelationshipwithLife;theCosmicprevalenceof Life;IntelligentDesign;andGodliness.MannedSpaceflightisdeemedhelpfulwithinlimitedconfines.

Somepeoplethinkthewholeworldisnowslidingintoconfusion.Certainlytheworldweexperienceshrinksbytheweek.Doesnotthismeanthat,come2050,itisboundtobeeithermuchnicerormuchnastierthannow?WhiletheconflationEngaging the Cosmosenvisagescouldneverunaidedguarantee“niceness”,itcouldbenecessarytoit. Butwhyturntoastronomytomediateadaptation?Celebrationof theheavensremainsaparamountreason.Important,too,isthesubject’sCopernicanstatusasQueenof theSciencesor,atanyrate,of physicalscience.Moreover,civilastronomymaybetheclosestwegetinternationallytoaseamlessscientificcommunity.Thenagain,astronomershavenotinfrequentlybeengoodphilosophers,notablyvis-à-visthetimelessdisputationbetweenIdealismandMaterialism.Aboveall,thesubject’srootsarespreadthroughmanyancientcultures.In365AD,Chineseskywatchersdivinedthesolarwind’sexistencefromtheslewingof cometarytails.By500BC,Mesopotamianpredictionsof lunareclipseswereaccurate,towithinhours,inagoodhalf of recorded cases. VicBredenkamp,Theology1953Ihavenohesitationinstatingmyconvictionthat,whenIwasatMansfieldthe tutorial system constituted the backbone of myacademicstudiesintheHonourSchoolof Theology.Admittedly,Iwas fortunate inmytutors -WHCadman,ErikRoutleyandHortonDavies, whose considerable scholarship contributedenormouslytothewealthof learningthatIacquiredatOxford.Therigorousdisciplineof havingtoprepareanin-depthessayeverytwoweeksthroughouttermtimewasademandingassignment.Wewereadvisedtolimitthenumberof lecturesweattendedtolessthanhalf adozenperweek.Therestof thetimewasspentreadinginthelibraryandwritingtheessays.

RishiDastidar,History1996Despitemybest efforts (turninguphungover; breathless fromhavingrunoutof theRadCampreciselythreeminutesbefore;9amMondaymorning starts - bymy own choice) I generallyenjoyedmyweeklyorbi-weeklyintellectualsessions.Thankfullybythethirdyear,IhadfiguredoutwhatIneededtodotoatleastappearconsciousinthem.Somenotableoccasionsstandout.Attimestheycouldbebrutal-IusedtocurlupwithanoxiousfearbeforemyBritishHistory I sessions, knowing that theywouldbe anunmitigateddisaster.Butmoreoften thannot theywere(andremain)someof themostfree-wheeling,wide-rangingandstimulating conversations I’ve ever had.

Thetutorialhaslongbeenthecentre-pieceof anOxfordeducation.Forgenerationsof undergraduates,theweeklymeetingwithatutorhasformedafulcrumaroundwhichyoungmindshavebeenhoned.Of course,thetutorialhasevolved,notablyinrelationtothegrowthof scienceteaching.Butthatisitsgreatmeritasateachingmedium:itcanbeadaptedtocircumstances,whetherinrelationtosubjectortoperson.Recently,therehasbeendebatebothwithinOxfordandoutsideastowhetherthetutorialsystemcananylongerbejustified.Inpartthisisanargumentaboutteachingmethodsinanewinformationage,butitisalsoaboutfinancialexigencies.Cantheexpenseof teachinginsmallgroupsbesustained.Inthisissueof themagazine,wepublishsomeof themanyresponsestoourrequestfromalumniforrecollectionsof tutorials.Somearefunny,somearemildlycensorious.Therearemanythatleaveoneinnodoubtaboutthevalueof thetutorial,butthereareafewthatpresentanaltogethermorenegativeview.Wehavetriedtopublishasmanyaspossiblewithinthespaceavailable.Wherecontributionshavehadtobeedited,wehaveendeavouredtomaintainthespiritof theoriginal.Anylateorunpublishedcontributionsmaybeplacedonthewebin due course

wehadveryintelligentdiscussionandthathetookmeseriously.However,Idon’tthinkanyof theothertutorsmadeanimpact.Someof mytutorialswerejustpetrifying–aswhenwehadtogovisittheoldnunwherewefeltwehadtodressappropriately.

MyexperienceatAucklandiswithamodernUniversityandof lectureswithhundredsof students,thePowerpointslidespostedonthee-learningsite,alljournalsetcavailablethroughtheinternet–andalsowehave“tutorials”with15-20peoplewherewecandiscussthings,plusofficehourswiththelecturers/tutors–plusthelecturersareveryhappytomeetwithkeenstudentsoranswerquestionsbyemail.Istillwriteessaysandhavethemmarkedaswell.Soitseemstomethatthetutorialsystemisnotneededinordertofeelyouarevalued,andthatyoucanhavedirectinputwiththelecturers.

RobKeeping,Physics1992Myrecollectionswerethatthetutorialsweremostlyconcretingthesubjectmatterof thelectures,whichweregenerallyinsufficientbythemselves.Lecturesandtutorialswereonlyasgoodasthelecturerortutorthatgavethem,thoughwithPhysicsourmaintutor managed to farm out some of the tutorials to other colleges and someof thesewere excellent. Tutorials in particulartaughtmemuchaboutliterature,andhowitrelatestomylife;aboutthenatureof learning,andtheskillsof teaching;andhelpedmetomatureinmypersonalcapacityforthoughtandanalysisfarbeyondtheworldof SpencerandChaucerandco.Iamsureit’s expensive. But there are immeasurablebenefitswhichoutweighthematerialcosts.

PeterZimmer,Theology1965As a graduate of a north American college I had been acquaintedwith the lecture-and- test systemof education, but had never experienced the cut-and-thrust of theOxbridge tutorial system, until IarrivedatMansfieldinMichaelmastermof 1965toreadTheology.IwasfortunatebeyondwordsthatmyprincipalTutor(andMoralTutor)wasG.B.Caird.Twoof usmetweeklyinGeorge’sroomsinCollege,eachpreparingandreadingapapereveryfortnight.Twoincidentsstandoutinmyrecollectionfromthattime.Thefirstoccurredontheoccasionof thefirstpaperIread.Itwas,Irecall,tobeonthekingdomof GodintheSynopticGospels,agentleintroductorytopic,andonedeartoDr.Caird’sheart.Ilabouredmanfullyfortwoweekspreparing,andfeltrelativelyconfidentwhenIoffered the fruitsof my labour.At theendof my essay, therewas an ominous silence. FinallyGeorgeletoutadeepsigh.“Isuppose”hesaid,“there’ssomethingintherethatwecanuse”,andoverthenexttwenty-fiveminutesdiscovered,ordemonstrated,thathisgracioussuppositionwasfalse.Carefully,andwithgreatpatienceheledbothmytute-partnerandmyself throughtheprocessof transmutingrawinformationinto a coherent, elegant and persuasive argument. He demonstrated,perhapsforthefirsttime,thedifferencebetweenknowingandthinking.Thesecondoccasionwasoverayearlater.Idon’trecalltheessaytopicwhichmypartner read, but it entailed a comparisonof anumberof NewTestamenttexts.Frustratedwiththeslowpaceof lookingupthetextsinGreek,Georgewavedhishandandtoldustosimplycitethebook,chapterandverse,andhewouldquoteit.Attheendof thetutorialthatdayheconfessedthathehad,asanundergraduate, taken one long vacation to memorize theGreekNewTestament.“Itwas”,hesaid,“purelaziness onmypart. I just couldn’t be bothered tocarrythebookaroundwithmeallthetime.”Bothof uswereawestruck,notwithhisperhapsfalseshowof

modesty,butwiththesheerpowerof hismind,whichcouldnotonlythinksolucidly,butwhichcouldalsoholdsomuchrawinformation,availableforaccesswhenneeded.Thatwasnowfortyyearsago,andIstillcountmyself blessedtobenotonlyatOxfordduringwhatwasmostcertainlyagoldenage,buttobeatMansfield,abletobetutoredbyGeorgeCairdatsuchaformativetimeinmylife.Hetaughtnotsomuchbywhathesaid,butbyhowhelistened;andinlisteningshowedthattruelearningalwaysgrowsoutof dialogue.

JohnZolidis,JYA1993Ihadonetutorialthatreallystandsout.Thesubjectwasthephilosophyof languageandmytutorwasEugeneFischeraD.PhilstudentatSt.John’s.Itwentsomethinglikethis:Eachweek,basedonhisreadingof myessay,mytutorwouldbeginoursessionbyaskingmetoexplaintohimwhathefeltIleastunderstoodaboutthesubject.WhenIcouldn’t,hedidn’tsimplyexplaintheideatome.Instead,heforcedmetofigureitoutformyself byaskingmequestionsthatweredesignedtoidentifyandbreakdownmymisconceptions.Iwasthenrequiredtomake a second attempt to explain the idea to him. Assuming hewas satisfied,wewouldmoveon to thenextpartof thesubjectthathefeltIhadfailedtograsp. Attheconclusionof thetutorial,Iwasgivenanewessaytopicforthefollowingweekandsentonmyway.WhatdidIgetoutof this?Besidesfeelingreallycompelledtoprepare(afterall,therewasnothingmorescarythatfacingthiskindof grillingwithouthavingdoneone’swork)theinterchangewithmytutoreffectivelytaughtmeasystematicwaytoapproachissuesthatIdidn’tunderstand.TodayIcan’trememberthedetailsof Frege’sargumentsonreference,butIcananddostillusethethinkingskillsIgotoutof mytimeinthetutorial.

Increasingtheendowmentof ourtutorialfellowshipswillnotonlyhelpthecollegesafeguardthefutureof teachinginthatparticularsubject.ItwillreleasefundscurrentlycommittedtoteachingfromMansfield’sannualincometobeusedacrossawidevarietyof projectstoimprovetheeducationalexperienceattheCollege;financialsupportforstudents,refurbishmentof existingfacilitiesandincreasedprovisionof ITandlibraryresources.

Of course,toendoweachexistingfellowshiprequiresaterrificamountof money,forwhichlarge-scalesupportwouldberequired.However,asshownintheGivingCulturearticle,widespreadparticipationatamodestlevelcanalsomakeahugedifferenceandalastingcontributiontotheprovisionof suchhighqualityteaching.MayIaskyoutobearthisinmindwhenyoureceiveourAnnualFundliteratureinthenearfuture.

MCBCNewsTermhasbarelybegunandthereisalreadyanairof anticipationaboutMCBC’sprospectsforthecomingyear.Thisyear’sfreshers,amixtureof experiencedandnovicerowers,havealreadybecomeveryinvolvedwiththeClub,allowingustoputout5crewsfortraining(3Men’s&2Women’s).Withtheassistanceof thecoachingteams,wearehopefulthatmanyof ournovicescanprogressquicklytobecomeaccomplishedoarsmenandwomenandtaketheClubupthedivisions.SeveralcrewsfromMansfieldwillalsobetakingpartinan8-hoursponsoredrowathoninaidof the‘HandsUpforDarfur’fundraisingeffortorganisedbyOxfordstudents.

AGivingCultureRevisitedYouwill recall that in the2004 issueof Mansfield,we lookedat the supportgiven–intermsof thenumberof donors,ratherthantheamounts–byeachmatriculation year. Following the success of the two subsequent telephonecampaignsingeneratingahugeamountof supportfortheCollege,wethoughtitwouldbeinterestingtolookathowthepicturehaschangedintwoyears.

Firstly,Iwouldliketoofferahugethankyou,onbehalf of everyoneatMansfield,foryourgenerosity.Itiswonderfultoseethatsupporthasincreasedineveryyearandweareparticularlydelightedwiththeincreaseinsupportamongstourmorerecentgraduates.Graduatesfromthelast10yearshaveraisedalmost£40,000,withthesameamountscheduledtobereceivedoverthenextfewyears.BeingabletoforecastwithsomecertaintywhendonationsaregoingtobereceivedisenormouslybeneficialintheCollege’sfuturefinancialplanning.

Onceagain,itisimportanttostressthatallsupport,atwhateverlevel,isvitalin theCollege being able to secure funding from companies and charitabletrusts.Mansfield’ssuccessfulapplicationsforsupporttothesebodieshasbeenbuiltonthewidespreadsupportthatouralumniandfriendscontinuetogive.However,themarketisbecomingincreasinglycompetitiveandwemustbeabletodemonstratebiggerandbettersupportthaneverinorderbeforetobenefitfromthegenerosityof thesecharitableorganisations.

Moreover,itisinterestingtoseehowagroupgivingamodest,regularamountcanmakesuchadifference.Wereallof Mansfield’sgeographygraduatestogiveanaverageof £30permonthoverthenextthreeyears,theywouldendowtheGeographyTutorialFellowship,inperpetuity,aswellasattractingover£300,000inmatchedfundingfromtheUniversity’sCollegeContributionsFund.Similarly,if allthoseundergraduateswhomatriculatedin1986gave£8.33everymonthfor3years,itwouldprovideagrantof £1,000peryear,everyyear,toastudentfacingfinancialdifficulties.

Havingpreviously spent 2 yearswithVSOrunningahoneyfactoryinnorthwesternZambia,Iwasinterestedinvolunteeringagain,butforashorterperiod.Itwaspartlytheprospectof thetravellingwhichattractedme,particularlybeingabletotakemorethanabrief annualsummerbreak,butalsothedesire to see international development from the other end of the foodchain.IcontactedAnthonyandsomeweekslaterwasonaplane to Calcutta.

Therefollowedanextraordinary5monthsduringwhichImadesomeattemptstohelp2localnon-governmentorganisationswiththeconstructionof businessplans.BothNGOshelptosetupandsupportwomen’sgroups,particularlywithmicrofinanceinitiatives(averyclever,simpleandeffectivealternativeformof financethatstartedinBangladesh).Oneof theNGOsalsoworksinthefieldof disastermanagement,whiletheotherrunsaschoolforchildrenwithdisabilitiesinatownoutsideCalcutta.

IhadawonderfultimegettingtoknowCalcutta,possiblythemostcolourfulandculturallystimulatingcityintheworld.Forexample,theannualweek-longbookfairinthecentralpark(the‘maidan’)

Attheageof 6mydaughter,Ellie,wasabletovisitforaweektowardstheendof mystay.Thiswasspecialforme;whileforheritwasachaoticmixtureof sightsandsounds.Unfortunately,hermainmemoriesareof malariatabletsandstomachupsets.However,sheisproudtohavebeentoIndiaandrecentlyshetoldmethatatschoolshewasbeingtaughtaboutlifeinanIndianvillagebyateacher‘whohadnotevenbeenthere.’

Aswell as finally having the time to readWarandPeace and discover various Indian books(mostmemorably‘TheGodof SmallThings’byArundhatiRoyand‘AFineBalance’byRohintonMistry)Ialsocontinuedmysporadicre-readingof someof theliteratureIspeed-readatMansfieldfrom1977-80withJohnCreaser.ItstillbafflesmethatundergraduatesstudyEnglishintheirlateteens,withsolittleexperienceorunderstandingof theworld,particularlytheinternalworld,aboutwhichtheyarereading(Iamtalkingaboutmyself and presuming it applies to others too). But I do rememberJohnsayingatanintroductorysherryeveningtothe8or9of uswhostartedin1977,thatheprincipallysawtakingadegreeinEnglishasbeingthebasisof alifetime’sreading.Despitemy repeated failure to produce essays on time(afailingIhavereproducedfortheverypatientand persevering editors of this magazine), I do appreciatehavinghadtheopportunitytospend3 years atMansfield reading and discussingliterature.

JustasIstartedtocontemplateconvertingmymid-careergapyearintoveryearlyretirement,IdidfindapermanentjoblastDecemberastheDirectorof FinanceandResourcesatacharityinnorthLondon,TreeHouse,whichworkswithchildrenwithautismandtheirfamilies.SofortheforeseeablefutureIambackonthetreadmill,andenjoyingit,butallthetimeknowingthatthereisanotherworldoutthere.

Formanyof thosehigh-achieverswhohavehadthebenefitof spendingthreeormoreyearsinthecareof Mansfield,thepathonwardsisclear,andisonethatfulfilsthestatusquoof accomplishment.Ashareof hardwork,latenightsandcommunityspiritisliabletobereplacedby–well–moreof thesame,albeitwithamovetothecitypotentiallyexchangingtheshortcycletotheBodleianforthebelovedclaustrophobiaof thetube,andtheCherwelltowpathforthedelightsof theSouthbank.Whatthen,however,of thosewhoseresolutiontoworkwithsomethingtheylove(andwe’renottalkingaboutaccountinghere)leadsthemdownanaltogetherdustiertracksignposted‘thecreativeroute’?

Well,inthecaseof thisparticulartrainer-clad‘mediatype’theloveismusic,anditwillsurprisefewof youtohearthatmy‘path’afewyearsonfromgraduationhasbeenneitherstraightnordirectlyuphillintermsof progressandsuccess,andhasalsoinvolvedalargedoseof humility.

Suddenlyconfrontedwiththeneedtoforgea(lessclichéd)lifeformyself afteraspelltravelling,Imademyentrytothemusicindustryintime-honouredfashion-throughluckandperseverance.InaworldwhereatopOxforddegreehaslittletruecurrency(where,indeed,manyexecutivesproudlytradeonthefactthattheyhaveverylittleinthewayof education)itcanoftentakeacontact–inmycaseanoldfamilyfriend-togiveyouafootinthedoor.Forseveralof thoseImetinthisfirstphaseasalong-termworkexperiencenonentityatSony,thestarry-eyedenthusiasmwithwhichtheysteppedinfadedfast.Therealityof suchanover-subscribedindustryisthatstable,well-paidjobsareveryfewinnumberatanylevel,andearningthestripesrequiredtoreacharespectableposition can take longer thanpatience and ambitionwillallowformanysanepeople. ThefactthatIhadtakenthisonboardbeforetryingtojumpintomusicmaymakemeseemallthemorefoolish,butitalsohelpedmebuildupanextrareserveof stubbornnessso asnot tomindworking for free, and to learn to treateventhemostmenialof tasksas if theyweremattersof lifeanddeath.Whilenodreamjobwashandedtomeonaplate,ninemonthswithoutsalary(inter-dispersedwithstintstempingatothermusiccompanies)wasenoughtoimpress(orannoy)othersenoughtorecommendmetomycurrentemployers.

Lifeonthepayrollstillisn’tthemostglamorousof affairs.After 18months inmy smallmusic and entertainmentmarketingcompany,thepresentationwritingandresearchIenjoydon’tcomeuninterrupted.Atypicaldaywillstillinclude

suchwondersasfetchingcoffee,puttingouttherubbishandassuring15differentfriendlyvoicesfromacallcentreinBeijingthatourcompanywillnotberequiringanew‘mobilefoam’.Thenthere’sthewholemoneysituation,of course.Iwillfreelyadmitthatsometimesitwouldbenicetohaveenoughsparecashtobeabitlessfrugalwiththeshopping,ortogoaboutreplacingmyrapidlydecomposingcollectionof t-shirts.

Itisnotthecasethatthecorporateworldanditsrelativerichessomehowescapedmyattention–rather,itwastoutedaroundeverycornerduringmyyearsasanundergraduate.IsupposeIbelieve,simply,thatthesubtletiesof careerdivisionamongstoursupposedelitearelargelydrivenbythequestionof priorities.If iteverseemsthatachoiceof amoreillustriousor‘respected’routethatIhavebypassedismotivatedbythedesireformoneyalongside the thrill of success, I should make an admission, namely that in one sense, I am guilty of my own -equallypertinent-brandof greed.Yousee,bychoosingacareerpathbasedonapassion,theworkisoftenenjoyable,seldomverystressful,andallowsmetoretainenoughenergywithwhichtoindulgemydreamsfurtherwhenplayinginmybandoutof officehours.Thosewithanyknowledgeof theunsignedbandcircuitwillthinkmeagluttonforthepunishmentof slowprogress,butthethrillof therecordingstudioandthestageatliveshowsalmostalwaysmakesmefeelprivileged.

WhiletherewascertainlynomusicindustrymentoringsystematMansfield,inmanywaysmypathhasbeenanaturalcontinuationof mytimethere.AtOxford,too,Iwasworkingwithouttheincentiveof apaypacketof anyweight.WhiletheUniversity’sreputationwasclearlynohindrance,alongwithmanyof mycontemporariesIwasworkingtoindulgeapersonalinterest(inliteratureinmycase),totaketheopportunitytobecreativeandtoseewhatIcouldachieve.Theethosof acceptance,whichIfeelcharacterisesMansfield,alwaysallowedmetofeelcomfortablealongsideotherswhowere(andare)farmorecareer-focusedthanmyself,atleastatthisstage.WiththemovetomusicImaynotbefulfillingmy‘potential’asmeasuredagainstmydegree,butluckilytherearecompensationsinwhatcouldunderstandablybeconsideredunderachievement.Duringtheday,Iampaidtokeepuptospeedwithanindustrythatexcitesme,andinperformance,everypositivecommentreceivedandeveryfanwonisanothervalidationthatbringspleasureonbothsides.IneffectIamverymuchhavingmycakeandeatingit,andif perhapsitisn’ttherichest,itmostcertainlyistasty.

Itwasn’tanuncommonscene.‘WakeMeUpBeforeYouGo-Go’wasechoingacrosstheQuad;intheJCRLukewassingingfalsetto;andsomewhere,deepinthebowelsof theCollege,Russellwaschasingpeoplewithastick.Yes,therewerecoupleslyingontheChapelLawngazingatthestars,orjumpingupanddowntoPulp,andeveryonewasresistingtheurgetostumbleovertotheJohnMarshbuildingandgotobed.ItwasaSaturdaynightmuchlikeanyotherbopinthesummerof 1996.Except,of course,thatithappenedadecadelater,andwealllookedmuchworseinthephotographs,andthatdayIhadmarriedZoe.Butthat’sonlytheendof thestory.Itreallystartedmorethanahalf acenturyago,inthesameplace.

In1941,mygrandfather,RobertS.Paul,havingbeenanundergraduateatSt.Catherine’s,cametoMansfieldtotrainfortheCongregationalministry,andtodohisD.Phil.Hehadsupportedhimself duringhisundergraduateyearsbyworkingasacommercialartist,andevendidcaricaturesof allof themembersof theMCRandSCR,copiesof whichareintheCollegearchive.Hewasamemberof theCollegecricketteam,andtheirteamphotographfrom1943provesquiteconclusivelythatIhavekeptmyhairlongerthanhedid.Mygrandmother,EunicePickup,hadbeenaModernLanguagesstudentatWestfieldCollege,Universityof London,andwasevacuatedtoSt.Peter’swhenthewarbegan.Thetwometduringmeetingsof theCongregationalSocietyatMansfield,andsherememberseveningsspentinJohnMarsh’srooms,listeningtohimreadthestoriesof DamonRunyon.ListeningtotheCollegeChaplainreadshortstoriesis,Iamsure,thewaymostundergraduatesprefertospendtheireveningstothisveryday.

Therearemanyargumentstobemadeabouttheallegeddeclineineducationalstandardsthathasapparentlyhappenedoverthelastfiftyyears.Ishallonlymentionthat,asaweddingpresent,JohnMarshgavemygrandfatheracopyof thePenguinbookThe Pocket Handyman.Intheinscriptionheusedtheword‘proleptic’.Nomatterhowmuchtheworldhaschanged,nothingwillstopOxoniansshowingoff theirknowledgeof Greek,anddeliberatelyusingwordsthatwillsendotherstotheir dictionaries.

Aftermygrandparentsweremarried,theymovedawayfromOxford,firsttoLeatherheadCongregationalChurch,then,afterthepublicationof mygrandfather’sbook,The Lord Protector,totheWorldCouncilof ChurchesatBosseyinSwitzerland.Fromthere,thePaulsmovedtoAmerica,althoughtheyvisitedtheCollegeatleastonce.IhaveavideomadefromanoldSuper8filmlabelled‘PaulFamilyHoliday1963’(actually,thefilmwaslabelled‘DeanandLydia’sWedding’,butitwasinthewrongtin,whichdidsomewhattaketheshineoff itssurpriseshowingatmyparents25thweddinganniversary).Init,thereareshotsof thedriveintoOxfordoverMagdalenBridge,takenfromthewindowof amovingDormobile,shotsof berobedacademicsfilingintoCongregation,andfootageof myunclesulkingatbeingmadetositthroughtheboringQueenMother’sopeningof thetediousJohnMarshbuilding.ThatsameunclewouldreturntoMansfieldasaJuniorYearAbroadstudentin1975forHilaryandTrinityterms.WhetherhefoundthatexperienceasdullashisfirstcontactwithMansfieldhasnotbeenrecorded.

BythetimeIcameuptoMansfieldin1995,theCollegehadreceiveditsRoyalCharter,enablingustodancetauntinglyinfrontof thoseunfortunatesataPPHlikeRegent’sPark,BlackfriarsandSt.Benet’s.Noteverythinghadchangedhowever.IremembertheJCRPresidentof abouttenyearsago,explaininginaJCRmeetingthatMansfieldwastoopoortoqualifyforthePoorColleges’Fund.Aleafletsentoutfromthecollegein1952,suggeststhatthiswasnotanewsituation.Itwasentitled Vision Fulfilment?TheleafletmakesitclearthatMansfieldhadhadtomakeitsstaff muchsmaller,wasunabletobuylibrarybooks“withthesamefreedomasinthepast”,andthatitneededanother£4,000ayeartosurvive.Thereisahandytearawaysheetattheback,sothatyoucansendyourmoneytothem.

AftersuccessfullyavoidinganythingresemblingModernHistoryforthreeyears,in1998IbecameActingAssistantJuniorDeaninthesummerafterI leftCollege. Itwasliving inthesameroomsmygrandparentshad listenedtoJohnMarshinthatIsatandtriedtoavoidquestionsof whatIwastodowiththerestof mylife,occasionallyberatingvisitingNebraskansfortheircavalierattitudetothesanctityof theQuad,anddesultorilyapplyingforjobsIdidn’twant.

EightyearslaterIwasback:againdressedinsillyclothes,againdrunk(bytheend),butthistimeintroducingsomeonenew,mywifeZoë. Itwas awonderfulday, andawonderfulcombinationof theoldandthenew.Nothinghadchanged,butthenagain,everythinghad.Yetanotherchapter inmyfamily’shistorywaswrittenatMansfieldCollege.Itisoddtobeabletopointtoaplacethathasbeensosignificantinsomanyways,andtothinkof thedebtyouowetoit.

DrW.B.Selbie,inanarticlewrittenforthefoundingof the College in 1889 said of the need for a nonconformist College: “Members of Nonconformist families cameintoasocietywhosereligiousassociations,customs,andinfluenceswerealtogetherunlikethoseof theirhomes.The faith inwhich theyhadbeen rearedhadno livingassociations,nooutwardandactivebeing,andnoacademicrepresentativeatOxford.” PresumablyundergraduatesturnedupathomeaftertheirfirstterminOxfordandstartedputtingpostersof archbishopsontheirwalls,goingaround smelling of incense, and starting arguments over theChristmasdinneraboutCardinalNewman.However,without this place for the training of Congregationalministers,withouttheCongregationalSociety’smeetingin the JCR (or theLectureRoom, as itwas then),mygrandparentsmightneverhavemet,whichwouldhaveseriouslyjeopardisedmyfutureexistence.

ImetZoëwhenweappearedinNews Revue (according to the Guinness Book of Recordstheworld’slongest-runningsatirical sketch show– and, according to someof itsaudiences,itdefinitelyfeltlikeit)together.Withouttheopportunities I had atMansfield toneglect theuseof Scandinavian coin-hoards in determining the levels of Danegeld paid in the 11thcentury,preferringinsteadtoskulk inpubs and theatres, Iwouldprobablynothavehadtheopportunitiestoturnmyloveof thestageintoa profession.

Had it not been forNathanielMicklem, Principal of theCollegewhenmygrandfatherwasthere,Iprobablywouldhaveendedupwithadifferentname.SomethinglikeColin orAntoine or Shane. For that alone I amimmenselygrateful.As far as I know, I am the first person to be ‘third-generationMansfield’,althoughaCairdoraCadouxwillprobablypopoutfrombehindahedgenowtoprovemewrong.IwishIcouldgiveaMansfieldtothewholeworld:an institution and a place that is haven and home, and a

placeinwhichonecanbechallenged,orbewelcomed,orjustbe.Itisaplaceof learning,bothaboutoneself andabouttheworld,anditstandsinthebesttraditionof education,onlyaverysmallpartof whichhappensintutorials.Iwisheveryonehadabartowhichtheycouldgotoargue,todebateandtodancetoWham!IwisheveryonehadaMansfield.Forthoseof uswhodo,I’dsimplyremindus that it shouldbe cherished. And that their rates forweddingsareveryreasonableindeed.

MansfieldGeographersbelievethatGeographyismorethanasubject;itisawayof life.However,neverdidIthinkthat itwouldbeawayof lifeordeath!NextyearIhavethechancetotraveltoAntarcticaandcampforfourweeksontheUnionglacierintheEllsworthMountains.IwillconductresearchthatwillbeusedtocreateteachingmaterialsdesignedtoinspirechildrenaboutGeographyand Science.Theexpedition,comprisingfourteachersandtwoguides,isbeingorganisedbytheFuchsFoundation.Itwillcelebratethe50thAnniversaryof thefirstcompletecrossingof thecontinent,bySirVivianFuchs.Myresearchislookingathowhumansenduretemperaturesaslowas-90°C(pluswindchill!).Theteamarelendingtheirbodiestothestudy.WhilesurvivinginAntarcticatheywillundergotesting;theirbodyfatwillbemeasured,theirdietandclothingwillbemodifiedandtheirfaceandhandswillberegularlyplungedintoicedwatertoseeif itreallydoescausetheheartratetoslow!!Trainingstartedlastweekendwithtwodaysof testingtents,stovesandfitnessinthewindandrainof TheLakes.FurthertrainingwillbetakingplaceoverthecomingmonthsinScotland,ThePeaksandNorway.Wewillbelearninghowtoman-haulsledgesoncross-countryskis,putuptentsin100kmwindsandescapefromcrevasses.Anydonationswouldbewelcomedtothiseducationalcause.Pleasecontact [email protected]

DavidDew DavidDew,whodiedof cancerinMarch2003, spent seven years atMansfieldreading three degrees – first degrees inLaw and English and a postgraduatedegree inEnglish – before going on totrain as a teacher. He entered into all his academic work, and everything he didoutsideit,withgusto.Davidwasacollegeinstitution:afountof wisdomandawittycommentatorwhocontributedtoalmostevery aspect of college life.Hewas anintellectual whose appreciation of theclassicsonceexpressed itself in aGreekballad that managed to include in itsdramatis personae a significant proportionof bothJCRandSCRmembers,carefullyre-named but clearly recognisable!HispassionforVictorianmusicwasallowedtounleash itself upon a chapel congregation whenoneof hisorgancompositionswasperformed. With these distinctive interests hecombinedqualitiesonemightlesseasilyhaveguessed(reflectingdeterminationasmuch as natural talent), rowing severaltimes in successiveCollegeFirstEights,someof whichwonblades.

David’s whole teaching career was atOundle School in northamptonshire. His career choice was perfectly suitedto his personality and talents.He wasthe quintessential public schoolmaster,devoted to the school and those in his care and taking a very active part inmany aspects of school life, as he hadatMansfield.Hewas especially active intheschoolCCF(aschoolCCFprizenowbearshisname)andboththeschool’sandthetown’smusicalactivities,takingpartinfourchoirsincludingthelocalGilbertandSullivanSociety:fittingly,Oundlemarkedthesaddeathof oneof theirmost loyalandrespectedteacherswithaperformanceof Verdi’sRequiem.

Many generations of Mansfield studentswill rememberDavidwith affection and– if sensitive enough to his intellectualqualities or the barbs of his humour–someawe.

MichaelDurber

Michael came up to Mansfield from Newcastle-under-LymeHigh School in1978,graduatingwithaFirstinGeographyin1981.HewentontodoaMastersdegreein theUnitedStates, also inGeography,before returning toMansfield to do aTheologydegreeandtrainfortheministryof theCongregationalFederation–thusunitinginhiscareerboththereligiousandsecularelementsof Mansfield.HemarriedSusan, aMansfield theology studentwhowas subsequently ordained in theUnitedReformedChurch,andtheyhadadaughter,Grace.

Michael served as Minister of the Congregational Church in Walkden, Lancashire, and was subsequentlyresponsible for the organisation of ministerial training in the Congregational Federation.HerepresentedhisChurchonMansfield’sMinisterialTrainingCommittee,returningfrequentlytotheCollegeinthiscapacityandtakingakeeninterestinthetheological side of theCollege.HewasbasedsuccessivelyinSalfordandOxford,where Susanministered, and then afterthebreak-upof theirmarriageinWitney,wherehe regularly preached at his localCongregational Church and provided a lovingsecondhomeforGrace.

Michael’suntimelydeathwasasanindirectresultof atragiccaraccidentmorethantwoyearsbefore.Afteralongandcourageousstruggleinthefaceof terribleinjuriesherecoveredsufficientlytoreturntoWitneyand regain his independence, but braindamagecausedbydeprivationof oxygenatthetimeof hisaccidentgraduallytookover.HespenthisfinalmonthsinanursinghomeatNewcastle-under-Lyme,closetohisfamily.Michaelwillbemissedforhissharp intellect, independence of mind anddry senseof humour; forhis calm,sensitive and caringpersonality; and forhisfirmChristianfaithwhichsupportedhim throughout.

GeorgeWilliamsAfterreadinghistoryatMerton,GeorgeWilliams came to Mansfield in 1939 and studied for his theology degree.

In MemoriamAlthoughmostCollege buildings hadbeenrequisitionedbytheGovernmenton the outbreak of war, he enteredwholeheartedlyintothelifeof theJCR,whereheformedalifelongfriendshipwithGeorgeCaird,whowaslatertobePrincipalof Mansfield.In1942hewasordainedintheCongregationalministryand served the churches in Ware, London, Kendal and Thames Ditton beforemoving in 1966 toMaidstonefor his longest pastorate.

George quickly became a wel l-known local figure in the life of thecounty town, a part-time chaplain atapsychiatrichospitalwherehebuiltastrong rapportwith the patients andan enthusiastic supported of Christian Aid,Shelter,AmnestyInternationalandanygroupthatwasdeclaringaChristiansocial message. With the local Roman Catholicpriesthewasinstrumentalinsetting up a hostel for the homeless and alcohol-addicted.

After seventeen years atMaidstone, heandhiswifeRowena retired in1983 toBath,wherehecontinuedtotakeservicesandwas apopularCity guide ashe ledvisitors around theCity. Withhis finevoice, he revelled in leading roles in the local drama group.

GeorgewasamanwithaburningChristiandesire for social improvement for the needy,thelonelyandthedowntrodden;a great and questioning intellect; neverafraid to speakout forwhat he saw toberight;andalaughthatenlivenedanygathering.HelovedMansfieldandcameback fromCommemorationwheneverpossible.

InApril2006,GeorgeandRowena,whohadmetwhenhewasatMansfieldandshewas at StAnne’s, celebrated theirDiamondWedding with their threedaughters.Afewweekslaterhediedattheageof 89. Hewillberememberedbymany throughout the country as apowerful and challengingpreacher and,aboveall,asatrustedandloyalfriend.
