‘N THE MANOR OF SPEAKING
2020
Manor Park Dog Park Definition - A place where we bring our furry companions to run, play fetch, and meet other four-legged friends. Back in 2007, Barbara and Jack Cart-wright made a generous donation to Manor Park for the creation and operation of a neigh-borhood dog park. Jack and Barbara walked their two dogs Jack & Lucy daily finding pleas-ure in meeting new neighbors all over the cam-pus. After two years and many miles at Manor Park, Jack made the suggestion of a dog park and followed with a donation to get the project started. The dog park soon became a great place to gather for socializing, both dog and
owner. A group of dedicated dog lovers meet regularly throughout the day to socialize their dogs, so the excuse goes, but as we have learned, it is as much for the owner as it is for the furry companion. Still to this day the dog park is enjoyed by many. Once again gener-ous residents, a group of avid dog park goers, have made a sugges-tion, the addition of a shade structure, followed by a donation to help with the cost. The group is working with Manor Park and a contractor to pick the perfect style of shade structure. We look forward to hot Texas days with a little shade this summer.

The boxes are located in the Atrium of the Barney Greathouse Activity Building – on the table where residents signup for activities, on the counter of the Sparks Café in Helen Greathouse Manor and in the large room for Bluebonnet Trail in the Mabee Center. I can hardly believe that it is already time to change the clocks back to Daylight Savings Time this month (March 8th). Along with the time change this month, we will see the beginning of the spring. This year we have generally had mild weather, although I am nor forgetting the ice and snow we had in February. I have heard many people say they can hardly wait for the cold weather to come to an end. Yes, we may have one or two more winter storms before it is all over. Even with those storms, there was a sense of beauty that creation displays even in what we feel are unwelcome circumstances. Yes, at times it was difficult, if not unsafe to go about what we would normally do, but we hoped that the terrible weather would change and things would get back to normal. Whenever things are difficult for us, we have hope, or faith, that things will get back into a more normal state. The hope or faith that we exhibit is in something that, at the time, we can’t grasp or see. Vaclav Havel, a former Czech writer and statesman wrote the following about hope, “Hope is not about believing you can change things. Hope is about believing you make a difference.” That is true to the extent that we truly believe that we can make a difference. The challenge for us is how can we see ourselves making a difference in the lives that we touch every day? How can we rise above the difficul-ties we are experiencing to make an impact on those around us? Sometimes we can make a difference by smiling at someone or by helping do something big or small. We put our hope (believing we make a difference) into action by doing, not just being. Sometimes in the act of doing, we are being who we should be. In the Book of Hebrews, in the first verse of chapter 11 it is put this way: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (KJV) Faith and hope are tied together knowing our expectations, but realizing these are tied up in the future, some-thing we can’t see. The hope in any situation is that things will get better. We have our vision of what is better and hope that through faith things will turn out for the good – whatever the situation is. The Message translation puts it this way; “The fundamental fact of exist-ence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see.” As life unfolds, it is my prayer that you have the foundation you need for all of life’s ups and downs.
Blessings, Chaplain Bill Billett BCC

Eleven garden club members planted almost 2,000 onion slips at the
end of January. With the rainfall and
snow we have received, the onions are
doing really well. Around the middle
of March, we are hoping that the
spring onions will be ready to
harvest. Please remember to take only
every second or third spring
onion. This will thin the young plants
and leave room for the remaining
onions to grow much larger. Please
make sure that the onions are washed
before eating as we have added several
supplements and amendments to the
soil which you don’t want to ingest.
Onions are a good source of fiber,
potassium, vitamin C, and Vitamin B-
6. A medium onion has only 40 calories
and no fat or cholesterol. Onions are
also rich in antioxidants, so help your-
self to this beneficial vegetable. Please
remember that the Victory Garden
vegetables are for Manor Park
residents only. Want to get involved?
