Manor Park Dog Park Definition - A place where we bring our furry companions to run, play fetch, and meet other four-legged friends. Back in 2007, Barbara and Jack Cart-wright made a generous donation to Manor Park for the creation and operation of a neigh-borhood dog park. I can hardly believe that it is already time to change the clocks back to Daylight Savings Time this month (March 8th). Along with the time change this month, we will see the beginning of the spring. This year we have generally had mild weather, although I am nor forgetting the ice and snow we had in February. I have heard many people say they can hardly wait for the cold weather to come to an end. Yes, we may have one or two more winter storms before it is all over. Even with those storms, there was a sense of beauty that creation displays even in what we feel are unwelcome circumstances. Yes, at times it was difficult, if not unsafe to go about what we would normally do, but we hoped that the terrible weather would change and things would get back to normal. Whenever things are difficult for us, we have hope, or faith, that things will get back into a more normal state. The hope or faith that we exhibit is in something that, at the time, we can’t grasp or see. Vaclav Havel, a former Czech writer and statesman wrote the following about hope, “Hope is not about believing you can change things. Hope is about believing you make a difference.” That is true to the extent that we truly believe that we can make a difference. The challenge for us is how can we see ourselves making a difference in the lives that we touch every day? How can we rise above the difficul-ties we are experiencing to make an impact on those around us? Sometimes we can make a difference by smiling at someone or by helping do something big or small. We put our hope (believing we make a difference) into action by doing, not just being. Sometimes in the act of doing, we are being who we should be. In the Book of Hebrews, in the first verse of chapter 11 it is put this way: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (KJV) Faith and hope are tied together knowing our expectations, but realizing these are tied up in the future, some-thing we can’t see. The hope in any situation is that things will get better. We have our vision of what is better and hope that through faith things will turn out for the good – whatever the situation is. The Message translation puts it this way; “The fundamental fact of exist-ence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see.” As life unfolds, it is my prayer that you have the foundation you need for all of life’s ups and downs.

    Blessings, Chaplain Bill Billett BCC

Eleven garden club members planted almost 2,000 onion slips at the

end of January. With the rainfall and

snow we have received, the onions are

doing really well. Around the middle

of March, we are hoping that the

spring onions will be ready to

harvest. Please remember to take only

    every second or third spring

onion. This will thin the young plants

and leave room for the remaining

onions to grow much larger. Please

make sure that the onions are washed

before eating as we have added several

    supplements and amendments to the

soil which you don’t want to ingest.

Onions are a good source of fiber,

potassium, vitamin C, and Vitamin B-

    6. A medium onion has only 40 calories

and no fat or cholesterol. Onions are

also rich in antioxidants, so help your-

    remember that the Victory Garden

    vegetables are for Manor Park

Thanks to better health, science and technology, in general people are living longer than the aver-age life expectancy of 78.6 years. We are com-mitted to providing a community where our residents can actively age within the seven dimensions of wellness ( emotional, vocational, physical, spiritual, intellectual, social, environmen-tal) One tool to add into your pouch for safely maintaining an active lifestyle is an Alert System. Manor Park provides a home-based system. Alert Technology is so advanced now you can have a system that is effective out of the home, out of town, and even out of the state.

We have resources in the Independent Living Office to help with choosing an Alert System.
