Banksia News – Playful Learning is……

Current Events

Waratah class has begun an interesting

investigation. We have started examining

designs for aprons with the goal of

eventually producing a class set for all of

our students to use in the school kitchen.

One important consideration is the fabric

that we choose. We have found out some

interesting things! The class have worked in

groups to research various fabrics and

recorded their findings on a

“Plus/Minus/Interesting” Chart. Some of our

findings are …

*Wool absorbs and releases water vapour as

humidity rises and falls which is why it

works so well as clothing – Heidi and Lydia

* Rayon doesn’t build up static electricity

so it is not dangerous – Georgina, Chloe,

Hannah

* Cotton retains water and is absorbent.

It is soft and comfortable – Tyla and

Sasha

* Mummies have been found wrapped in

linen from over 4 000 years ago. It is the

world’s oldest fabric – Ross and Alister

* Leather is a durable and flexible

material. You have to kill an animal

every time you want to make leather –

Sam and Seb

* Mould and fungi do not grow on

polyester. It does not stain very easily –

Jesse and Caleb

In maths we have been exploring

perimeter and area. It has been interesting

finding out the many different ways we can

measure things and the formulas used to

work these out. We have had to complete

some very tricky challenges and stretch our

problem solving skills, but it has been fun

making mistakes and trying different ways

of doing things.

Kitchen Capers

We have all been very busy cooking in our new

kitchen. We have made a variety of ice blocks,

including yoghurt and strawberries, yoghurt and

banana and even some mango and honey ones. We

plan to explore other options and try some new

recipes. If you have any fruit in your gardens that

you are able to donate please drop it into the school

when possible. All donations will be greatly

appreciated.

Friday lunches are now fully stocked and ready to

order. This Friday we have sausage rolls,

bolognaise, tuna mornay and bacon pasta available

to order. We plan to keep this menu, but also add

in some other choices as the year progresses. If you

have any ideas about simple, healthy recipes we can

use or are available to come in and cook up some

batches with the children, please talk to Laura

Hadley.

Thanks to our lunchtime chefs who cooked up a

batch of delicious bacon pasta!
