Entries open for Ballance Awards

by Denise Gunn

Entries for the 2015 Ballance Farm Environment Awards opened this month and strong interest is expected in the competition.

The annual contest, which recognises sustainable land management, environmental awareness, good business practices, and social and community responsibility, has become a major event on the rural calendar. The competition is facilitated by the New Zealand Farm Environment (NZFE) Trust.

NZFE acting chairman Simon Saunders said the 2014 Ballance Farm Environment Awards drew an excellent standard of entries and he is expecting strong interest in the 2015 competition.

Farmers and horticulturists are eligible to enter the competition with several award categories considered by the judging panel. The contest now operates in 10 regions throughout the country and past-entrants have described their participation as a highly worthwhile experience.

“Most people enter because they want feedback on how their farming or horticultural operation stacks up in terms of environmental sustainability,” said Mr Saunders.

“Entrants also seek ideas from competition judges and other participants on how to improve the Farmers who participate in the competition are also encouraged to share ideas and innovations with the wider farming community.

“You don’t have to have the best looking farm in the district to enter.

“Regional competitions offer a host of category awards, and you only have to be performing well in one area to have a chance of picking up an award.”

NZFE acting chairman Simon Saunders said strong interest is expected in the competition

The judging process is conducted in a relaxed, friendly manner, with judges taking climatic factors into account.

“In the past we’ve found that farmers can be reluctant to enter if their farm has been affected by drought,” said Mr Saunders.

“But the judges know that severe climatic events are all part of farming and they will look beyond this at the wider picture.” The 10 regional supreme-award winners from around the country will be honoured at a national sustainability showcase next year. A national winner will be announced at this event and they will receive the prestigious Gordon Stephenson Trophy, named after the founder of the awards. This year’s winners were Canterbury dairy farmers Mark and Devon Slee.

Accolades for Feilding Farmers’ Market

by Denise Gunn

Feilding Farmers’ Market has scored a hat trick, taking out the New Zealand Farmers’ Market of the Year Award for the third successive year.

The accolades kept flowing for Feilding during the recent 2014 Farmers’ Markets Awards: Raewyn Loader took out the Market Manager of the Year; Almadale Produce Limited won the ‘Dirt on the Roots’ category for its potatoes; and the ‘Best Food producer from the Kitchen Bench’ section went to Lancaster Citrus for marmalade made from its orchard produce.

Products from farmers’ markets around New Zealand were put to the taste test by judges and chefs Hester Guy and Julie Biuso, along with Farmers’ Markets New Zealand chairperson Chris Fortune.

Mrs Guy said judges found less reliance on preservatives in the bottles and more emphasis in the integrity of ingredients.

“The raw product is the hero, and the quality and flavours of these products is paramount.”

The New Zealand Farmers’ Market of the Year Award recognises community support and involvement in local farmers’ markets. Customers around New Zealand vote for both their favourite market and preferred stallholder.

Prize-winners were announced at the recent Farmers’ Market New Zealand conference held in Feilding.

Established by the Feilding Promotion’s Community Development team, Feilding Farmers’ Market is held each Friday in the town’s centre. The market attracts up to 36 regular stallholders during the summer and 28 in winter. MANAWATU

Feilding Promotion chairman Michael Ford congratulated everyone involved with the Feilding Farmers’ Market.

“Feilding Promotion is incredibly proud of our market, and the successes of the market,” he said.

“The positive marketing publicity that the awards bring can’t be bought — priceless.

“A big thank you to everyone from Feilding Promotion.”

Around 40 independently owned and operated farmers’ markets are held around New Zealand with an estimated 50,000 customers supporting them each week.

“The attention to quality and freshness is what makes the difference, and you can find that in bucket-loads at farmers’ markets nationwide on a weekly basis,” said Mr Fortune.

rescued horsesA RETREATFOR

And when another horse from the same stable, found in the backyard of a Masterton house,

was so emaciated it collapsed on the float ride to its rescue home, Amy knew exactly which direction the rescue retreat needed to take.

“This made me realise there needed to be an ‘in-between’ someone to do the research into homes and to get the horses ready for new careers,” she said.

With a background of horse enthusiasts in her family, it was no surprise that Amy’s passion for horses and animals showed through from a young age. She rode at pony club throughout her school years, then gained a wide range of experience working with polo ponies, thoroughbreds, dressage horses, Standardbred racehorses, and rode for a leading New Zealand Parelli horseman. Amy also began an apprenticeship as a jockey but discontinued this due to weight issues.

BY DENISE GUNN

The sight of a former favourite racehorse, in a state of neglect and in desperate need of a home after being given away by a trainer to an inexperienced owner, led Amy Whitney to set up Riverside Equine Rescue Retreat.

She kept on riding trackwork however, and worked as a stablehand for several high profile New Zealand trainers.

Amy said the knowledge she has gained through watching and learning from leading horsemen and horsewomen has been invaluable.

“I’ve developed extremely light hands, a steady and stable seat, and have a calm, yet confident demeanour that reflects onto all the horses I ride.”

Amy’s experience and skills have helped her to retrain and rehabilitate numerous horses since setting up the equine rescue retreat in April 2012.

Located on a 40-acre leased property at Te Horo on the Kapiti Coast, the equine rescue retreat takes in a maximum of ten horses at a time for retraining.

“This is a personal restriction, but allows us to have enough funds and time to give the horses what they need,” said Amy.

Horses arrive on the property from all over New Zealand.

“Some trainers send everything they retire to me.

“I get calls from all sorts of people in all sorts of situations every week.”

In the two years since setting up the equine rescue retreat, 108 horses have come through the gates for retraining. Amy said the type of training depends on the horse.

“Mostly I just want them to be happy, relaxed and enjoy being ridden.”

Groundwork and desensitising plays an important part in the foundation work. Hacking out over roads, beaches, and farms follow, with games and other exercises in the arena.

A variety of volunteers also ride the horses and help work out what each horse is most suited to.

After each horse has completed a retraining programme, Amy advertises them for sale. Potential new owners visit the property to meet Amy and the horse they are considering buying.

“We then find them the most suitable home,” said Amy.

Amy said the rewards are many when she is able to see a horse she has rescued, retrained and rehabilitated, being well cared for and enjoying leading a new life.

“Seeing that glimmer return to a sad horse’s eye, and watching a bond form between a new horse and rider — you couldn’t pay for that kind of happiness.”

Amy said she has also had to learn to be realistic. “At first, I wanted to save them all, and have since learnt that the best thing for some is to cross the rainbow bridge.

“Being the person that decides this fate can be really difficult at times, but I have to know deep down that I am doing the right thing.”

Amongst the group of volunteers who help out with the horses, is Amy’s best friend, Emmalee.

“She helps with absolutely everything, and I couldn’t do it without her,” said Amy.

The equine rescue retreat is a not-for-profit organisation and relies solely on fundraising and donations.

School turns outBY DENISE GUNN

South Makirikiri School has sent AgriKids teams to compete at regional and national level for the past 11 years, consistently ranking in the top placings.

he 158-student school, near Marton in the Rangitikei district, had its first taste of AgriKids at

the inaugural competition in 2003.Teacher Anne McDonald mentioned

the event to her class of year seven and eight students at the school and the concept appealed to them.

The school entered three teams into the event, held in Wanganui, and one of the teams placed first. “I guess this was the beginning of AgriKids for South Makirikiri, as this success created an enthusiasm for students to enter in the following years,” said Anne.

South Makirikiri School was established in the mid 1800s after

local farmers cleared the land and built a schoolhouse. Many of these farmers’ descendants continue to farm in the area and generations of families have attended the school.

The secret to the school’s AgriKids success lays in a foundation of preparation, support, commitment and passion with students, staff, parents, and community members all rolling up their sleeves to get on with the task at hand. Students also learn new skills and have plenty of fun along the way.

Parents, students and teachers are all involved in preparing for AgriKids events with coaching commencing shortly after selection for a national event.

“The teacher may focus more on general knowledge questions, mapping, New Zealand and world places, whereas the parents focus on the hands-on and written agricultural aspects,” said Anne.

Closer to the event, preparation may also be included within the school day.

“There is a real commitment from parents towards AgriKids and we are most grateful for that as a school.”

Community members with expertise in particular knowledge or skills areas are sourced and found to be more than willing to help students in their preparation.

Anne said the students have a very positive attitude towards AgriKids.

“They want to be involved in this kind of event as it represents their rural school environment.

“They like the challenges, the physical, written, and oral tasks.”

The number of teams entered each year into the regional event gives a fair

indication of students’ enthusiasm and interest in AgriKids.

Fundraising, a crucial factor in getting teams to events, involves students and parents.

“In the past, students have cut and sold firewood, cleaned cars, and held discos to name a few,” said Anne.

Raffles are also sold to help increase the funds.

Sponsorship from the local and wider community is willingly given. Key sponsors tend to be rural-based suppliers and local community groups.

“The local community is most supportive as they see the value in seeing local students compete in a national event, representing their district.”

AgriKids teams are made up of three members. Recognising the strengths of each team member is an important aspect of the student-led event.

The enthusiasm for AgriKids has continued to build up over the years within the school and the surrounding community. Seven teams were entered in the regional event this year. South Makirikiri School is proving to be a force to be reckoned with through numerous placings at regional and national level. On two occasions, the school’s teams have also scored hat tricks.

AgriKids project leader Josie Hampton said no other school has taken all the top three spots at regional level.

“So it’s pretty impressive,” she said.“It’s great to see how committed

and determined all the South Makirikiri School teams and teachers are towards the AgriKids competitions.

“As AgriKids is continually growing, we are seeing some very talented students competing and we are continually surprised at how competitors already know so much about agriculture.”

Three teams from South Makirikiri School competed at this year’s AgriKidsNZ national finals held in Christchurch in July. The school’s‘ The Three Makateers’ team took out top honours.

One of the really beautiful things during this period is the new life that abounds on the farms — it is a period of renewed hope for the future of farming and for our country overall. As you move around the farming areas listening to those new little voices and watching them running and playing, it gives a marvellous feeling of hope and prosperity for everyone.

From Agrissentials’ point of view we not only see the wonder of this new life above the soil but also, as the temperature rises, we recognise the awakening and multiplication of the soil life; the micro-organisms and the macro-organisms especially the worms

within the soil. Here is another level of life that also needs recognition as it is an integral part of farming. All life above the soil is intrinsically coupled to the microscopic life and worms and their recycling system below the soil.

The heavy use of chemical over the past 30 years has seen the destruction of this unique soil recycling system resulting in soil erosion and pollution of farms and our environment. Agrissentials however, specialises in rebuilding the soils recycling system with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which reinstate fertility, health and productivity back into the soil.

New life on the farmThe agricultural annual baby boom is underway and the pressure is on as calves and lambs dominate the farming landscape over the next two months. Although a harrowing time for the farmer we all hope and pray the weather is at least favourable.

A D V E RT O R I A L

Top soil is natural capital which has supported life on the planet since the day life began. Today, globally, destruction and erosion of this once bountiful natural capital is becoming a major concern. It is time to turn this situation around and begin using products that not only keep production pumping, but also, through the recycling system build topsoil depth through the activities of the micro-organisms and their ability to build humus (which is carbon) which is topsoil.

Once you get this microbial wealth, living breathing and multiplying throughout your soil your farming world will begin to change to a point where you will quietly step off the chemical-treadmill and get back to real farming: producing new life below the soil and healthy new life above the soil — the best of both worlds.

One of our Southland farmers who has been on our program for six years or more, got out his mower to cut the hay: only metres into the job he broke both belts on the mower. He went and bought two new belts but then decided to call in a contractor to cut the grass. The comment from the contractor after cutting was that it was the first time ever on that tractor that he had had to drop to a lower gear to get the job done. Here is the proof, that if you can get the soil right, the grass will be more nutritious, with a thicker sword, resulting in strong healthy animals which should fetch a better price. It all comes back to the soil.

Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are just that: bringing life, fertility, health and vitality back to the soil for a better farming world. New Zealand’s isolation, soils and weather make us a strong agricultural and horticultural country, giving us the opportunity to be the best producers on the planet. Look after the soil and the soil will look after the farm and the farm will look after you and yours.

Start with fundamentalsWe all know that to begin a job with a blank slate means ‘doing it from scratch’ or ‘building from the ground up’.

But it’s a lesser known fact that both these sayings predate modern building techniques by thousands of years. The first refers to scraping away the topsoil to expose a solid, rocky foundation, while the second comes from the times when new buildings were often constructed on the foundations of earlier structures.

To build ‘from the ground up’, then, is to be utterly sure of the quality of the job, leaving nothing to chance.

These days it doesn’t take armies of peasant workers or teams of oxen to get the job done. Preparing a solid foundation is more often left to skilled excavator drivers, while heavy trucks bring in concrete to be pumped into place.

Still, we can look back even further in terms of the fundamentals of a

build, to another meaning entirely of ‘starting from scratch’ — the ancient Greek and Roman practice of architects scratching initial designs onto a wax tablet with a stylus. These days it’s more likely to be a magnetic stylus and an iPad.

From the very start, it’s always been a good idea to consult with professionals. Whether they are designers and engineers working with weights, measures and sketches, or the people you trust to turn the soil, pour the concrete, or add the finishing touches, the landowner’s version of doing things ‘from the ground up’ should always involve digging deeper into the credentials and qualifications of his build partners. For that very reason, we’ve gathered some of the best on these pages!

Putting the passenger firstby Andy Bryenton

There’s a sense with some UTV off-roaders on the market that one feature alone has been chosen as the engineering goal of the exercise.

Whether it’s simply providing the most power, or the greatest speed, or the biggest towing capacity, this kind of arms race can end up very much like the one being waged by the ‘big three’ German car makers for maximum horsepower.

That’s why the Yamaha Viking is proving so popular. It’s not focussed on simply stump-pulling torque or flat-out speed. Yamaha’s engineers have taken it back to first principles, making everything about the new Viking centre on the driver and passengers.

That’s passengers, plural, because one of the first things Yamaha realised was that many jobs around the farm need more than two pairs of hands. With three seats in line at the centre of the chassis and frame, the Viking builds out from the concept of safety, utility and comfort for the crew on board. This naturally led to the development team choosing a high ground clearance double wishbone front and rear suspension setup, tuned for the smoothest ride they could achieve over the harshest terrain they could find. Good thing too — because Yamaha’s engine choice has made sure that despite not being all about big figures, the Viking still packs a punch.

Yamaha have drawn on their motorcycle building experience, installing a big, water cooled four stroke single cylinder in the Viking. This 686cc mill provides an excellent power and torque curve, assisting in smooth handling. More importantly perhaps, the big one-pot engine allows accurate and natural-feeling engine braking, a safety feature in its own right.

The choice of a large capacity one cylinder motor also means bags of pulling power, giving the Viking over 650kg towing capacity and nearly 300kg on the tray.

By going back to basics, and building the new Viking around the needs of the

Ezy Up is easy as

If you’ve got a ride-on mower you’ll know it will need a clean once in awhile.

That especially applies to its underside, which is the part that comes into closest contact with the grass.

And occasionally you want to check the blades and maybe get them sharpened. But the problem with ride-on mowers is that they are so darned heavy.

Unlike a conventional lawn mower you can’t just pick them up and turn them over.

So, the solution adopted by many owners is to forget it and hope that everything is OK. But that’s dangerous

If you can’t clean the bottom of your mower, grass and debris will accumulate. The blades will have to work harder and will be less effective. If that happens you won’t be getting the best value from it.

The solution is something so simple you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it yourself. It’s the Ezy Up ride-on mower lift that lifts your ride-on mower, so you can get underneath. It’s simple to operate and conveniently sized, so you can store it in your garage or shed.

What are you waiting for? Go to www.ezyup.co.nz and order today. It’s quick and easy — just like the Ezy Up.

Green machine dominates the dirtby Andy Bryenton

When it comes to big air and high speed off-road action, few combinations of names stand out like Kawasaki and Monster Energy.

The combo come together in the form of an internationally dominant motocross team, and it’s not just their matching bright green livery which has lit up tracks since the inception of this alliance. The successes of the Monster Energy Kawasaki team comes down in no small part to the skill of riders like Blake Baggett, Dean Wilson and Justin Hill. But there’s a huge investment in engineering and power at their command

each time they race - and now the next generation of Kawasaki’s track-proven tech is being offered to the Kiwi market.

First out of the blocks is an evolution of a model which first saw the light of day in 2008, come roaring out of Kawasaki’s back-room development labs to critical and rider acclaim. The KLX450 boasted a lightweight 449cc single cylinder four stroke engine mounted in a well-balanced frame, and its

overall performance capabilities made its ‘F’ designated variant a favourite on the track. At the same time, Kawasaki developed an ‘R’ model, an enduro-spec alternative which blends the hard-core moto elements of the KLX450F with a little practicality. For 2015 they have re-imagined this popular enduro bike, releasing the new KLX450R early - in fact, it’s here already!

The new member of the KLX family has electric start, a powerful headlight and taillight, and digital instruments - indicators and a VIN are the only difference between this and the kind of bike you’d take to the shops. Its gravel, sand, mud and trail manners make it a nice stepping stone for hardcore motocross riders who are perhaps considering a road bike to add to their stable. Then again, this bike is not supposed to be just a frugal way to

commute. The KLX is a true enduro machine, retaining the narrow, easy to handle frame, high ground clearance and torquey gearing of a pure off-roader. Effectively the ‘R’ designation means the ability to handle more surfaces in a wider range of conditions, making this machine truly multi-purpose.

In keeping with Henry Ford’s old mantra, the KLX450R is available in ‘any colour you like’, so long as it’s Kawasaki’s traditional racing livery - bright lime green!

What old cars and urea have in commonMy love of cars and enjoyment of driving stems from the exquisite sense of freedom achieved as a result of purchasing my own vehicle as a teenager.

Summers of picking up hay provided sufficient money for the restrictions of push bikes and unreliable bus services to be released. At that time a new car entering the neighbourhood was a special event, but it was the smell that indelibly etched itself into the memory. New cars of 50 years ago had a unique pungency of fresh polish, new rubber, and hot oil — quite unlike any today.

As a result I’ve never wanted to accept that oil is a finite resource and my support of offshore drilling is purely emotive and selfish. Logic provides a different perspective but emotion always wins.

Emotion is at the base of every action, logic is simply the tool used to justify the decision, and so it is with the use of fertiliser nitrogen. The best long-term data shows that annual pasture production was significantly higher in the years prior to the widespread regular applications of nitrogen, particularly urea.

However there is now a second generation of farmers who believes their ability to grow sufficient pasture relies on its regular application.

Recently a farmer becoming increasingly concerned at where the discussion on its use was heading tried to end the

Soil Matters with Peter BurtonSoil Matters with Peter Burton

session by saying that he didn’t care what the question was the answer was ‘more nitrogen’. But what if the answer to generating more pasture is ‘less nitrogen’ or ultimately ‘no nitrogen’?

The measures from properties using CalciZest/DoloZest based total nutrient programmes over the last 10 years clearly show more pasture is grown than on properties using comparative conventional fertiliser nitrogen driven programmes.

The cost is less and the increase has always been immediate. The growth is equally dependent on nitrogen but it’s now fixed direct from the atmosphere mostly via clovers and stored in humus ready for use as required.

Because feed quality is higher, fewer kilograms of dry matter are required to produce a kilogram of milk solids. Fewer animals are required to achieve targeted production reducing the pressure on people, cow sheds, races, and water systems.

Animal health costs are markedly lower and there are numerous properties now where empty rates are 10% or lower, and intervention with penicillin is seldom required. With greatly reduced stress on operators

DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

ROAD SAFETY

family times become more relaxed. Clients spoken with recently cited the knowledge that they already had the ability to farm under the pending nitrogen regulations as a genuine positive.

These overseer-based regulations are designed to reduce animal numbers as cow urine is considered to be the greatest contributor to excess Nitrate-N leaking below the root zone of plants and less cows means less urine.

The model will doubtless be refined over time as data that shows the concentration of urea in urine can be markedly influenced by the diet of the animal. In the short term reducing animal numbers will help balance the equation.

There’s profit to be made from producing a genuine 1000kgMS/ha from pasture alone. An increasing number of ESI clients are achieving this and with per cow production around 500kgMS a high level of per hectare production is achievable within the regulations.

For more information contact Peter Burton on 0800 843 809.

Share your storyRural Women New Zealand is inviting people to get creative by writing short stories and taking photos and videos to showcase New Zealand farming life today.

“We are running the competition in conjunction with the Ministry for Primary Industries to tell the stories behind the primary products we grow on our farms,” says Rural Women national president, Wendy McGowan.

MPI will use some of the photos, videos and stories to promote the New Zealand primary industry brand and our rural values.

“We encourage people to get their creative juices flowing to share the challenges and triumphs of farming and today’s sustainable business practices.

We hope to see entries that reflect our care of the land and our animals, and the skills and ingenuity of the people that make New Zealand’s primary industries so successful.”

Rural Women NZ also hopes the competition will highlight the opportunities for great careers that are available in the sector.
