In analogy to Darwin’s theory of evolution, a knowledge creation can also be seen as process of variety-generation and selection [20].

Knowledge selection depends on what fits best to (changed) organizational settings [28], what is on a higher level of maturity [24] or which promises new innovations [20].

organizations are interested in qualified and reusable knowledge assets as output of these processes [20, 24].

appropriate management support is challenging

How can we manage the knowledge creation process and what are the key challenges for the

operationalization?

SER Model and knowledge creation

• Seeding – basis for the knowledge development

– domain expert, initializes the process with existing domain knowledge

– seed might influence the behavior during the following collaborative knowledge creation activities

• Evolutionary Growth – community refines the initial ideas and accommodate to the multiple

perspectives of the community members

– at some point the created knowledge become apparent and a combination and consolidation is required

• Reseeding – initiated after need for reorganization, stimulation or gardening was

detected

– new knowledge elements can be added to stimulate the development in a certain direction

At some point: • Knowledge assets are scattered among team members • Team members are challenged with too much potential

knowledge assets • It is difficult to determine what knowledge assets are important

and needs the team’s attention

Intervention enabled due to tracking tool: • Content-related parameters – e.g., readability score • Collaboration process related parameters – e.g., # of ideas

organized • Context-related parameters – e.g., document changes

Scenario – Point of Intervention

Future Challenges

• Finding suitable parameters indicating that knowledge is ready for gardening or re-structuring

adaptation of existing quality metrics

• Determine suitable seeds for different settings, i.e. communities or topics

using adaptation techniques

• Gather contextual information about the collaborative knowledge creation process

using different kinds of sensors or collaborative tagging

adapt pattern-based task management

Conclusion & Outlook

• proposed a management approach to facilitate the organizational knowledge creation

• identify opportunities to guide organizational knowledge creation processes

• ICT support and the efficient monitoring of collaborative knowledge creation processes is very important

• Investigation of real world knowledge creation processes to gain an in-depth understanding

– lab experiments in distributed collaborative settings
