MANAGEMENT OF POULTRY
LAYERS AND BROILERS
BROODING CHICKS
Brooding is a process of providing a warm environment for the chicks, to help them grow normal
feathers (quill) and shade of the chick feathers or chick downs.
0-4 WEEKS
Housing
Room closed with adequate ventilation deep litter or cages.
Density 25-35 chicks/m2 1st-2nd weeks
Room corners rounded with hardboards
Brooding chamber/room of 15-20m2 for 500
Brooding groups or batches
Feeders
Egg trays/plastic plates 3 per 100 chicks
1 metre chick troughs for 50-100 chicks or an eat length of 2-4cm per chick
Drinkers
Plastic chick drinkers (the best) 1 per 50-100 chicks
Inverted bottles round or trough container or a drink length of 3cm per chick.
Raise drinkers above the chicks’ wings.
Heat source
Hydrocarbon or wood
Dry vs moist heat
Silent stove, hurricane lamps, charcoal, gas burners
Infrared lamps NOT electric heaters
Brooder set up equipment
1) Litter

20-23hrs of 24 hrs

If weak chickens vaccinations are necessary
Feed – chick mash or broiler starter or broilers feed
Rule of thumb
Check on chicks every 2-3hrs continuously/night
Adjust heat, add water, feed, as necessary
Brooding ends at the end of 4th week or 5th week depending on climate conditions of the area.

This program is provided as a guideline to farmers on when to vaccinate Kenchick derived
Chicks. They do not constitute a guarantee for effective vaccination of the mention diseases
during vaccination there are other factors that affect effectiveness of the vaccine. Farmers are
however advised to follow the programs to the dot.
