A movie review of swades based on management concepts
1. INTRODUCTION
Mohan in hindi means everyone favorite. Here we are going toput up a review of the film
Swades based on the managementconcepts. Mohan here refers to two interpretations:-
1. How a person can be a transformational leader. I e How an ordinaryperson can
become extraordinary.
2. By giving this title I also meant that Swades is a question raised to all the citizens of
our country about ‟What is India and What it can be‟
The story of Swades begins with the introduction of Mohan Bhargava, an Indian living and
working in the USA. Mohan, a scientist for NASA is assigned to the Global Precipitation
Measurement Satellite project. From the exterior all seems well for Mohan, but he is troubled
with the thoughts of his childhood nanny Kaveriamma who still resides in India.
Swades is a movie about an NRI (Mohan) who comes back to India to meet his old nanny
(Kaveri Amma) and take her back with him.
The movie is in a village setting and shows how Mohan got involved in the affairs of the
village and how later it brings a change of heart and makes him come back and settle down in
India. The movie is a slice of life but holds a lot of message for training and development.
The movie argues for: do-it-yourself „Development‟, take „Responsibility‟ and about individual
empowerment.
It has multiple messages not just for NRIs to return home and work towards making difference,
but also of how one determined person can transform a community. India needs a revolution to
come right from the bottom level. We need a million Mohan‟s, not just one.
This movie advocates the “victory of individual spirit". It is about “lighting a bulb”. It is about
an individual‟s personal beliefs pitted against a society‟s hypocritical potpourri of “paramparas
and sanskritis".
It is about the transformation of an individual who is indifferent and cynical to the ways of
society, to an individual who doesn‟t accept the status-quo and stands for the people, against
people. It is about life. It is about a billion others who wait for Mohans‟ to change India.
Life also is a training field and lessons learnt from every day experiences and events develops
us and equips us to face challenges in our professional and personal life.
1.1 THE FILM ALSO OPENS WITH THE FOLLOWING QUOTATION FROM
GANDHI
“Hesitating to act because the whole vision might not be achieved, or because others
do not yet share it, is an attitude that only hinders progress.”
Set in modern day India, Swades is a film that tackles the issues that development throws
up on a grass root level.
It is to this India, which is colorful, heterogeneous and complex that Mohan Bhargava , a
bright young scientist working as a project manager in NASA, returns to on a quest to
find his childhood nanny. The story revolves around main characters Mohan, Kaveri
Amma, Gita and hundreds of innocent villagers of Charanpur.
The film uses the contrast between the highly developed world of NASA, which has been
at the forefront of advances in space research, and this world back home in India, which
is at the crossroads of development.
Mohan's simple quest becomes the journey that every one of us goes through in search of
that metaphysical and elusive place called "home".
2. TEAM WORK
Swades shows how teamwork pays, especially in the scenes where Mohan and the
villagers work together to bring in electricity in Charanpur. The title envisions the
emerging concepts of HR i.e. from
“I to we concept.”
After trying hard in explaining the benefits of unity Mohan and other villagers make
hydro electric power plant to solve the irregular electricity in village & get success…
3. A FEW LESSONS FROM SWADES
Aashutosh Gowarikars latest flick, Swades, brings with it a lot of lessons. Of course, the
moral lessons and patriotism is one thing, it also bring with it the management lessons.
The three main characters of the movie, Mohan Bhargava, Geeta and Kaveriamma depict
many management qualities.
The character played by Shahrukh khan, Mohan Bhargava, shows a lot of leadership
qualities which make him the man of the revolution. The man, who came to take his
nanny with him, ultimately returns to his motherland.
Lets have a look at various morals of the story:
Focus Mohans aim was to bring back his nanny, Kaveriamma, and he was focused. He
did whatever he could to achieve his goal. Crossed all hurdles on the way to realize his
goal. His focus was not hocus-pocus, until he realized the true sense of his life. His being
an Indian and what he could do for his motherland. Once enlightened, again he didnt let
himself distracted by any of the disturbances, but focused on the goals.
He decided to light the bulb in his own home instead of lighting the neighbors house.
En-cash on opportunities Getting more kids to the school was a milestone in achieving
his goal. He didnt miss any opportunity in bringing more kids to the school. He explored
all horizons, met all prospects, and one way or the other convinced them to send their
kids to school. He didnt except defeat even though there were few supporters. Ripping on
the strengths, he one by one changed all weaknesses into strengths, thereby uniting the
people and bringing more kids to school.
When the movie show is interrupted by power outage and everything goes bizarre, he
takes up the opportunity to convince people and show them the strength of unity.
People are your power Once he realizes that the only problem is the differences among
people, he tries to resolve them. He makes them understand that the power of team lies in
its members. The power lies in the people.
He finds people who can bring change and convince them to act for the betterment of the
village, and thus cultivates a harmony, team spirit and motivated force of people who are
ready to do anything for their common goal progress of the village, charanpur.
Don‟t hesitate to say sorry As a leader, Mohan accepts his mistakes, apologizes and
corrects them. He shows the most admirable and important quality of leader of listening
to the criticism, accepting the mistakes and thrives for improvement.
Take Charge, Take Control After all the hard work he does by creating teams, working
day and night for laying down the whole electricity generation plan and mechanism, he is
confident the bulb will light. When he does not see it lighting, instead of blaming or
cursing, he finds the problem, and tries to solve it.
Throughout his journey to the village and the time he is there, he focuses on the big-
picture instead of small issues. He makes the villagers understand the importance of
education, unity and power of people.
Mohan plays an important role in making people realize their power; Kaveriamma also
succeeds in her efforts of showing him the real aim of his life. She shows him that the
meaning of his life lies with his own people. She make him realize that the Destiny of ice
is to melt in its own water.
Geeta, who has a passion for teaching, let go the chance to fly to America, which is the
dream of many girls of her age, let go the love of her life, because she has faith in herself.
She has faith in god and faith in her motherland. She has a faith that he will come back
one day.
She teaches a lesson of confidence, commitment and faith, which is so powerful that it
makes Mohan leave his job, leave his comfort, and come back to make his life
worthwhile for others, repay the debts of his motherland, and once again, light the bulb of
belief, progress and love in the heart of his Swades.
4. MANAGEMENT LESSONS
The title Swades We, the People.
Swades shows how teamwork pays, especially in the scenes where Mohan and the
villagers work together to bring in electricity in Charanpur. The title envisions the
emerging concepts of HR i.e. from “I to we concept.”
Mohan portrays a true leader in Swades. We have instances of Mohan leadership in
which certain inevitable qualities of a leader like:
Knowledge Perseverance Patience Initiative Negotiation skills Motivational Skill
Empathy Ready to take responsibility attitude.
Mohan represent a true transformational leader who changes the destiny of a small
village and leaves a question in everyone mind.
“ Can i be a leader who can uproot the problems of India and make it shine?”
Gita also has shown certain leadership qualities initiative to be in Charanpur with a
mission fem powering the village with a
“try until you succeed attitude.”
5. RESISTANCE TO CHANGE AND CHANGE MANAGEMENT
Orthodox attitude of villagers towards education.
Mohan, gita and few responsible villagers changed their attitude.
Another instance of change management is the electricity generation in a village which
lived in darkness for decades.
“Swades” set a good example of how rural problems can be addressed by talented people
who decide to chuck their lucrative careers abroad and return to their roots in India.
A recent IFC report showcases Indian Social Ventures like Husk Power Systems, Water
Health International and Suvidhaa Info serve. In the days to come, trust Bollywood to
come up with more variants of the “Swades” theme!
6. KAVERI AMMA -THE REAL HR STRATEGIST
She understood both Gita and Mohan and made them encounter “right situations” so that
they all reach a consensus of remaining in India.
Similar to Kaveri Amma, all the managers needs to be strategists. They should know
their people, place them rightly to get the glimpses of success.
Mohan of course has even showed glimpse of strategist by allocating job to villagers
according to their capabilities while making reservoir.
7. CONCLUSION
Swades is a movie which depicts the typical trend of Indian youth. “Learn from India and
leave India to earn” -This is the attitude of most of the young Indians.Management
lessons learned should be applied in allIndian minds to bring in a change in attitude in
them.
“Apni chaukhat ka diya giving light to neighbors' house not good Sirji”
We need to be more responsible and responsive on what is happening around us. So
Swades is an invitation and a challenge to all young managers of India –“Can we change
India by using our management concepts?”
