be? • How will we get
there?
• What is you role in all of this? • What goals do you need to set to
contribute?
• Are you comfortable with this?

Setting work goals
Agree on the following with your employer: • What is the purpose of the job? • What are the measures of success? • What is exceptional performance? • What are the priorities and deadlines? • What are the resources available? • How does this relate to other people? • What is the broader picture within which
you have to work?
Identify your goals
• “I will get a job in the training industry within the next year” • Don’t use negative words like; don’t, wont, lose, stop. State what
you want in positive terms. Is it positive?
• The goal must be something you want! It must be meaningful to you It is mine?
• The goal must be able to be achieved with the resources available to you. Break you big goals down into smaller ones Is it achievable?
• Can you see, touch, taste, smell and hear what it is like to have your goal? Be specific- in business these are called Key Performance Indicators Is it specific?
• Set a specific date for when the goal is to be achieved, otherwise it may be forever in the future Is it timed?
Action Plans
5
Set and Meet Work Priorities
What do I do with all of these Action Plans?
How do I work out what is important?
How do you current work out and negotiate your priorities at work?
6
Time Management
Most people manage their lives by crisis. The only priority setting they do is between
one problem and another… Unless something important- not something
urgent- comes along, we must discipline ourselves to do as we planned
-Steven Covey
Urgent vs Important
Deal with the important
• What would happen if I didn’t do this right now?
• Should someone else do this? • Could someone else do this?
7
The 5 D’s
1. Do it Now 2. Do it Later 3. Do it when time permits 4. Delegate it 5. Dump it
The Pareto Principle
A small proportion of people, resources or time (20%) accounts for a large proportion (80%) of the results
So what are we doing with the other 80% of our time?
8
Planning & Scheduling
• To Do lists: – Help establish priorities – Help group like tasks together – Note down promises and commitments so you
don’t forget them – Plan your day or week – Remind you to do things – Remind you to follow up on things
Using technology
Others in the organisation can check your calendar and request meetings

workspaces • Other people • Worrying • Too much pressure • Lack of clear
