Over population and Under populationCarrying capacity

Refers to the number of individuals who can be supportedin a given area within natural resource limits, and withoutdegrading the natural environment

UnderpopulationSome places have many resources but few people such

    as:Canada and Australia.

OverpopulationSome places have too many people and few resourcessuch as:

    Bangladesh, Sub Saharan Africa

    Negative view - Malthus

Written in 1798Believed there is a finitenumber of people that canbe supported by foodsupply.

At this point there is anovershoot of peoplefollowed by a populationcrash due to famine anddisease.

He suggestedpreventative checks suchas delay in marriage and

no sex ( he was a vicar!!)

    Negative view EhrlichThe population bomb!

Warns of the mass starvation of humans in the 1970sand 1980s due to overpopulation

The Ehrlichs stand by the basic ideas in the book, stating in 2009 that"perhaps the most serious flaw in The Bomb was that it was much toooptimistic about the future" and believe that it achieved their goals because"it alerted people to the importance of environmental issues and broughthuman numbers into the debate on the human future."

    I = P A T (where I = Environmental Impact, P = Population, A = Affluence, T = Technology)

Limits to growth model uses 5 factors thatgrow at an exponential rate:

Population, industrialization, pollution, foodproduction and resources

Ability of technology to increase resourcesgrows only linearly

    As population increases, resourcesdecrease.

Food and industrial output growexponentially until resources and food runout and pollution increases

Population then crashes - Predicted tohappen in 2070
