War Memorial Has a Revamp If you wander into the St Mary’s churchyard you will see that Great Massingham’s War Memorial has had a revamp and looks brand new. This is all quite fitting at the one hundredth anniversary of the start of the First World War. The makeover was made possible follow-ing a successful appli-cation to the Norfolk Community Foundation by the Parish Council, earlier in the year. A grant in the sum of £500 was awarded by the Foundation towards the cost of the work.
The memorial has been cleaned and the posts, railings and lettering repainted. Thanks go to the ‘Norfolk Community Foundation’ for their support and to A.J. Restorations for their excellent work in completing the project.

Gt Massingham’s 6th Annual Village Yard Sale This year’s village yard sale will take place on Sunday, 31st August 2014 between 9am and 1pm. As with last year, this is not the Bank Holiday week-end but the one after. Hopefully, this will mean that less people in the village will be away on holiday and therefore able to take part. We may also avoid the traditional Bank Holiday weather which can be unpredictable! Last year was another success with over forty households taking part. Let’s aim for even more. Please do take part, have fun, earn some extra cash and help support the parish church. All pitch monies raised go towards church funds. Indeed, if you are a tax payer, you can gift aid your £5 pitch money which will ensure the church receives an extra £1.25 for each £5 paid. The envelopes will be available from the church or, direct from me. They simply require you to put on your name, address and signature.

Great Massingham Biodiversity Project to Receive Norfolk Award
Each year, the Norfolk Biodiversity Partnership in asso-ciation with Norfolk County Council organises the Community Biodiversity Awards for outstanding com-
munity efforts to conserve biodiversity across Norfolk. With our own site beginning to show positive effects of three years of clearing, planting, sowing by our volunteers and by the local school children, an application was submitted in April. The outcome was that The Great Massingham Queen’s Jubilee Biodiversity Project won the Site Award Category. The judging panel were particularly impressed with our efforts to “..enhance the village green for biodiversity, and develop the area for community access.”. The Award ceremony will be held in Norwich on Tuesday 22nd July when a framed cer-tificate will be presented. Many thanks to Mick Wingell for making the application, the hard-working volunteers who maintain the site and Andrew Bickerton who had the idea to start the Project several years ago. We are also grateful for the financial support from the Big Lottery Fund, Norfolk County Council and our own Parish Council. If you are not a regular visitor to the Weasenham Road site why not take the opportunity to walk over and see what we have achieved so far. It is, of course, a work in progress and we expect, in time, to increase the range of interesting plant species and reduce the extent of some currently dominant ones such as cow parsley and irrepressible nettles to make space for the many hundreds of bluebell seedlings the children have successfully grown at the School. Hopefully, these will be large enough for planting-out early next summer. Winter hedgehog homes are to be built by the school children and their installa-tion is planned for the autumn. Mike Jackson
OPEN GARDEN IN SUPPORT OF THE BIODIVERSITY PROJECT Sunday 6th July from 2 pm to 5 pm
Mike and Pam Jackson invite you for tea and cake and a walk around their garden at Long Barn, Kennels Farm, Castle Acre Rd
in aid of the Biodiversity Project. There are flower, shrub & vegetable gardens, a greenhouse, a wood and a wild flower meadow that together occupy about two acres. There will also be a small selection of garden plants for sale, All proceeds will help pay for seeds and plants for the biodi-versity site. Project volunteers will be on hand. The timing coincides with the Mens’ Final at Wimbledon but our TV will be switched-on, allowing tennis fans to keep in touch with the match.

Parish Council Report – June meeting Six councillors and Borough Councillor Mike Tilbury attended. Following the previous submission of the annual accounts, the annual return was signed. This will shortly be forwarded to the External Auditors. There continues to be grave concerns at the way the Borough Council passed their own planning application in respect of land on the Summerwood Estate despite strong opposition from both the Parish Council and residents. Sadly the Open Gardens competition had to be cancelled due to not enough entries. It is hoped to run this again in future years.

What?.... No Strollers! With most of our regular walkers unable to take part in our monthly walk the decision was made to cancel the June Strollers. This has very rarely happened over the fourteen years of the Massingham Strollers. Started by Robert Nash as part of the Mil-lenium activities it continues to provide an incentive for regular exercise and a social occasion for new and long term residents. In that time, six Strollers Guides of circular walks around our village have been created from a short tour of the village to a longer ramble of eight miles around Rougham. The guides are available from the Dabbling Duck for a deposit of £1, refunded on return. Our next walk is on 20th July and will end at Sculthorpe Mill for Sunday lunch. All are welcome but please contact me on 01485 520307 to book a lunch.

green to take a break and attracted a lot of attention.

The tractors were on a road rally that took them from Grimston to the Massinghams, to Harpley, Anmer, Sandringham and back to Grimston. Very splendid they were too!
Mallard News Gert & Daisy.... Well , how are yew gitting on tergether this month? We are back from our holidays and very pleased that the weather is keeping our tans up. We hev hed a couple of reports in which we are allus grateful fer – that save us heving to think so much! Mr Paul Miller hev reported that his woife Sue wus out on thar patio (cos they’re posh) with one of their littl’uns and his mother-in-law the other day when she saw a humungus snake. She dint know who ter git inside the house fust – she reckon she hint sin nothing as long as that up Drunken Drove fer many a year. Paul is very worried cos he is trying ter encourage frogs inter his pond (cos he’s posh) and the snake hev bin eating them. We think he orta contact the toad people and git them to repatriate some of the frogs from down Weasenham Road up ter Drunken Drove – problem solved. If eny wun else need eny problems sorting out let us know. Daisy wus out on her boike th’other day and as she went up the airfield road she thort someone hed left two bags of shopping b’hind. When she looked a bit closer she see that were dog muck in a nappy bag twice! Now, there is a dog poo bin at the beginning of the airfield and another one in Mill Lane so there int no excuse fer putting the poo in a bag and then leaving it on the road. DON’T DO IT. Thas marginally worse than not picking it up at all. Granted no one will tread in it but plastic bags don’t disintegrate (hed to luk that up). Daisy hed her birthday and her and Sid hed their Ruby Anniversary – she reckon she wus a child bride but Gert know better! The hul family including Gert and Bert joined them fer a meal in Fakenham and that wus very noice. Sid hev let himself in fer doing archery at the InterVillage but more about that next toime. Josette and Tony hed their annual garden party and that were a luvly day. We wud loike to thank them fer the donation ter the Coronation Club funds. Gert hev bin run ragged since her holiday what with one thing and another so her and Bert are really looking forward to their little break in July. Moight not be so gud next toime cos Daisy’ll hev to dew this report awl by herself! Anyway, dew yew keep atroshing and keep yer hat on else yew’ll be gitting sunburnt.

Rounders on the Green On Saturday 14th June nearly forty players, young and old, met for Rounders on the Green to have a lot of fun and raise money for the bus that will take our teams to the West Norfolk Village Games on the 29th June. The indefatigable Mel Whitmore and Julie Austin were the chief organisers. (See pictures on opposite page) The players were supported by twenty spectators who came equipped with rugs and chairs. After a couple of games there was a break for burgers and sausages from chef Rob Burton on the BBQ. The weather held, everyone had a great time and it all made a good contribution to the costs of the bus. The Parish Council has also been very suppor-tive and we are very grateful to them. The Games take place at Lynnsport on Sunday 29th June. It was a great day last year and we hope lots of supporters will come along. Although we have joined forces with Harpley, Little Massingham and Houghton we are still in the small village category. Our teams will also play against the medium size villages and any wins against them will help our overall score. We have some strong teams and are playing in nearly every sport. When we return to the Village around 5:30pm we will all meet at the Village Hall for BBQ and, hopefully, celebratory drinks. All welcome.

SCHOOL NEWS It has been a busy school year, packed with many exciting activities. The Partnership with Harpley C of E School that began in September 2013 has been very successful, bringing many benefits to both schools. You can read about the planned summer term Partnership Day below. At the end of term, sadly, we say goodbye to Mrs Mandy Heley, our foundation and KS1 teacher for the past ten years. Mrs Heley has been a reliable, supportive and caring mem-ber of staff and all at the school will miss her when she leaves. We thank her for the commitment she has shown. Many of you will know her well and please don’t hesitate to get in touch before the end of term if you wish to. We are pleased to announce that Mrs Katherine Heazel will be our new Foundation and KS1 teacher from September. Mrs Heazel is a very experienced teacher and comes to us from Gaywood Community Primary School in King’s Lynn. Her wealth of experience gained in her previous post can only benefit our school and children.
There have been many educational visits this year. This term alone there have been visits to King’s Lynn Fire Station for Crucial Crew Training, Great Cressingham School to learn about the Victorians, Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse (see pictures) to learn about life in the workhouse and to Sculthorpe Moor Hawk and Owl Trust Reserve to study owls and nature in general. Where possible the visits are joint visits with Harpley. The KS2 children, as part of their studies, are preparing a play entitled ‘The Great Balloon Debate’ and they will perform this to parents and governors at the Village Hall on 18th July. The children have been very busy writing and improvising. The story, very briefly, involves four Victorian philanthropists - Florence Nightingale, Lord Shaftesbury, David Livingstone and Dr. Barnardo - who are in a balloon which is
losing height. They each debate their importance to avoid being ejected from the balloon. As part of each debate the children perform small sketches to illustrate further what each of the famous people achieved in Victorian times. History comes alive! We are holding an RE Partnership Day on Friday 27th June with RE activities in the morning and a picnic and church service for families, friends and the local community in the afternoon. The day is to celebrate the successful partnership and the fact that the two schools are both church schools. The service, presented by the children, will take place at St Mary’s Church and we hope many parents and families will be able to attend.

CHURCH NEWS Summer Fête We are holding our annual Summer fête on the weekend 5th and 6th July. There will be the usual variety of stalls and games. Light refreshments will be available. The stalls will be open between 11am and 2-30pm. We would welcome any donations of cakes, produce, raffle or tombola prizes. If there is anyone willing to help us man the stalls then please let us know. There will be tower tours, weather permitting, but limited numbers. We are pleased to host the RAF Massingham Memorial Exhibition once again during our fête weekend. This will be open from 10am until 4pm both days. We expect increased numbers this year with all the anniversaries. There is some new content which had been compiled by the dear late Sister Laurie.
Cream Teas will be served on the Sunday of the Fête weekend from 2pm - a treat not to be missed - followed by Songs of Praise led by Rev'd Julian Thomson at 3pm. Church cleaning This will take place at 10am on Saturdays, 12th, 19th and 26th July. Any help in cleaning our beautiful Church will be very welcome. Weekly Church Teas These take place every Wednesday between 3pm and 4-30pm at St Mary’s Church. Come and join your friends for tea and cakes in a really friendly atmosphere.
