Come and sign on and catch up with players from the Brisbane Lions!!!

The 2012 AFL season is fast ap-proaching and the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions are gearing up for another growth year. Following on from the success of our Under 16’s and Seniors last year, 2012 will see the re introduction of an Under 18 side to complete the progres-sion of ages from Auskick through to Seniors.

The Senior team will be coached by Dan Baker who hails from senior football in Victoria and brings with him a wealth of experience and enthusiasm. Dan has also played senior football on the Coast over the last couple of years.

The Seniors and 18’s are currently training at Tunnel Ridge Rd, Lands-borough on Tuesdays and Thurs-days from 6pm.

The Juniors will once again see teams in the U8’s, 10’s, 12’s, 14’s and 16’s with numbers in all groups looking good. The Junior league is also forming a Girls only U15 competition, so if we can get enough girls aged between 12 and 15 we will enter a team.

There are some ap-proaching key dates to remember:

• Sign on for seniors and 18’s is ongoing and

can be done at Thursday night training;

• The Junior Sign On will be held on Saturday the 11th and Sun-day 12th February from 10am to 2pm. Lions Mascot Bernie Gabba Vegas will be appear-ing on the Sunday from 12pm to 12.30pm with Giveaways. A sausage sizzle will be held each day;

• On Thursday the 16th February at approximately 4.30pm we will have at least 3 or 4 mem-bers of the BRISBANE LIONS to meet with players prior to training at the ground. Again there will be a sausage sizzle and some giveaways.

The above events will be held at the “Jungle” on Tunnel Ridge Rd Lands-borough.

For further information contact Phill or Kelly McCombe on 54946995 or Matt McIntyre on 5435 2377.

Anybody requiring transport from Maleny or surrounds can also ring Matt on 0408072821.

Australian Children going for GOLD!It’s already well documented that children’s participation in organised sport (outside of school hours) has a positive eff ect on their health and well-being.

The Australian Sports Commission states on their website that forming links with sporting clubs and as-sociations enables young people to continue their involvement in sport on a long-term basis and, with Aus-tralia’s recent success at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, children’s interest in participating in organ-ised sport may not just be with rec-reation in mind, but also with the possibility of fulfi lling their dreams of winning gold for Australia.

Many of the athletes who com-peted in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010 were much younger than those who competed in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games four years prior. This could be an indication that more and more young people are striving to achieve high levels of performance

in sport and that our ability to rec-ognise potential is improving.

Commonwealth and Olympic Games medal winners are often put forward as role models for children and can have an infl uence on the pathways they choose both in sport and in life.

For young children and adoles-cents, participation in sport can also improve their self confi dence, increase social interaction and expose them to the concepts of fair play and achievement.

Participation in sport can also discourage them from develop-ing habits which will have a nega-tive impact on the quality of their health and well-being, such as sed-entary activities, potential violent behaviour, and substance abuse.

There is more info and stats on this subject at (yes, a very lengthy URL!)

At the Range Croquet Club in Maleny Vince Carbery returned to form with a vengeance in scoring a possible 26 to beat John Mc-Carthy and Kath Smith 11. Ken Barker 17 easily accounted for an out of form Michael Hepburn 4, but in a short game (14 maxi-mum) Ken had to bow to John, who won 13 - 4.
