I am one who doesn’t believe in deluding myself. I’m not going to sit at your table and watch you eat, with nothing on my plate, and call myself a diner. Sitting at the table doesn’t make you a diner, unless you eat some of what’s on the plate. Being here in America doesn’t make you an American. Being born here in America doesn’t make you an American. Why, if birth made you an American, you wouldn’t need any legislation, you wouldn’t need any amendments to the Constitution, you wouldn’t be faced with civil-rights filibustering in Washington D.C., right now.[…] No, I am not an American. I am one of the 22 million black people who are the victims of Americanism. One of the 22 million black people who are the victims of democracy, nothing but disguised democracy. So, I’m not standing here speaking to you as an American, or a patriot, or a flag-saluter, or a flag-waver – no, not I. I’m speaking as a victim of the American system. KushnerIl testo di Kushner è diventato in brevissimo tempo un testo canonico e il nome dell’autore è stato accostato ai grandi nomi del teatro USA: Tennessee Williams (A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Arthur Miller (The Crucible, Death of a Salesman), Edward Albee (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) e Eugene O’Neill (Mourning Becomes Electra, etc.).
Oltre agli autori citati, in particolare Williams e Albee, le maggiori influenze derivano a Kushner da altri drammaturghi, soprattutto da Thornton Wilder (The Angel that Troubled the Waters (1928), Our Town (1938)), William Inge (Come Back Little Sheba, The Tiny Closet, The Boy in the Basement) e dal teatro epico di BertoltBrecht. Infine, uno dei riferimenti è certamente il filosofo Walter Benjamin.
