Our sixth graders had a blast on their field trip to Camp Kanuga! Before they arrived at Camp Kanuga, they went on a white water rafting trip where they were challenged to work together to navigate through the rapids. After getting soaked in the rapids, they made their way to the campgrounds. They spent three fun filled days learning about team building, gardening, candle making and a little bit about square danc-ing. The high ropes course was unanimously voted the most favorite activity! Our students were challenged to go to new heights and push themselves out of their comfort zones.

Tina Uresti , 8th grade Middle School Teacher

Many teachers influenced me, especially my 5th grade teacher. I love to read,

write and all forms of written language. I enjoy learning many subjects. I have a thirst

for knowledge. I have a CDA in early childhood and taught at tw0 Montessori Schools

(7th-8th grade, TK-K) and preschool (infant/toddlers) for 12 years. I have a Bachelor of

Arts in Theater and English, a Medical Assistant Degree, and Masters in Psychology

(Educational Leadership) and aspire to work on my PhD this year.

Ms. Uresti graduated from UNC– Charlotte and University of the Rockies. She currently lives in Monroe.

When not at UA her favorite activities include acting and writing. She enjoys grabbing a bite at Portofi-

no's, Panera, and a Starbucks coffee (two or three!). She cheers for the Atlanta Braves baseball team and

loves Virginia Tech, UNCC and UNC college teams. Her favorite color is pink!

Welcome Mrs. Uresti!

Anaїs Garnett, 1st grade Lower School Assistant

I have worked with kids as a mental health counselor and then moved into edu-

cation, teaching college-level psychology courses. After taking a few years off to have

kids I decided that I wanted to get back into education. The philosophy and vision at

UA appeals to me both as an educator and as a parent, and I look forward to being here

for a long time.

Mrs. Garnett lives in Weddington with her husband Marlon and daughters, Amaïa (in 3rd grade) and

Sarai (in Kindergarten), both attending UA. Although the Garnett family now lives in Weddington, they

moved here from Los Angeles, CA but also lived in Europe for 8 years (Spain, Italy, Croatia). Mrs. Garnett

graduated from UC Irvine in Southern California, MA from American University in Washington D.C.

Mrs. Garnett's favorite activity is reading and horseback riding. Her favorite color is lime green and tur-

quoise blue. She enjoys Hispanic food, especially Puerto Rican and Cuban. When not busy with work

Mrs. Garnett enjoys any place you can drive to, no airplanes for her! Her favorite sport is basketball. A fun

fact about Mrs. Garnett is that she is one of 6 kids, with ages ranging 17 years between the youngest and

oldest!

~ Don’t Forget to Order Scrip Cards ~ What is the scrip gift card program?

The gift card program offers over 100 gift cards to sell to you at face value. The school purchases the gift cards through a vendor at a dis-counted percentage and receives a profit. (Example: You buy a $25 Bath & Body Works gift card from Union Academy, the school purchas-es it for 14% less, which is $21.50, the profit of $3.50 goes to UA). We made over $6,000 in profit one school year with only 30% of the fami-lies/staff participating! This profit goes towards various activities and supplies here at UA.
