Idon need o ell you how much I love makeup. If you know anyhing

abou me, you know is a huge par of my life. Firs and foremos, i rep-

resens my livelihood. Yes, a lo of he credi for my success goes o ech-

nology and social media, especially YouTubebu wihou makeup, would

any of his have been possible? Do you hink I would have found he same

audience if I had made cooking uorials? Imagine i: Okay, ime o make

fried chicken! Or workou videos? Fifeen reps, people! Cmon!

Who knows? Wha I do know is ha makeup has become he way I ex-

press my arisry, my creaiviy, and my desire o share knowledge wih

ohers. Bu I don wan o ge all super serious abou makeup because is

somehing ha should be fun. Im always bummed when I mee someone

and she ells me shes inimidaed by makeup. Theres no need for ha! If

you make a misake or you don like wha youve jus applied, you wash i

off and sar over. Don you wish everyhing in life were like ha?

Also, makeup is our war pain! Don you feel ready o ake on he world

when you apply your makeup, even when is jus a swipe of lipsick?

Applying makeup is herapeuic. Youre aking ime for yourself and

puting your bes face forward. Youre being creaive and apping ino

he aris who dwells inside you. Is grea for your psyche. Sure, applyingmakeup can be a pain when youre in a rush and rying o run ou he door

o ge o work or school on ime. Or maybe you don feel ha confiden

abou choosing or applying makeup. Im going o help you wih ha. Once

you maser makeup, youll feel beter and enjoy he process more. And he

sharper your applicaion skills, he faser you can ge ou of he house in

he morning!

Well cover some basics, because maybe youre a newbie o he world of

A womans life is so mulifaceed. Do you ac he same wih your signifi-

or coworkers? Probably no. Nobody is he same person 100 percen of he

ime. Nobody has o be! Thas why I love being a woman. We can change

our looks because makeup gives us ha opion. Wearing or no wearing

makeup represens he freedom o express how we feel and o be who we

wan o be.

Jus like a carpener is useless wihou a hammer or a hairsylis needs

scissors, you need he righ ools o apply your makeup well. This doesn

mean you need o go ou and spend a forune on makeup brushes andvarious implemens. Afer all, he bes ool is righ in fron of you: You can

apply eye shadow, foundaion, concealer, cream blush, lipsick, and con-

ouring and highlighing producs so easily wih your fingers. (You migh

no believe his, bu you can even do a smoky eye wih your fingers.) Bu

your fingers don work for everyhingpowder blush, for example. And

face powder is prety ricky o apply wih your fingers!

53Nice makeup brushes are always a good invesmen because hey can

las for years, if no decades. Is rue! You jus need o ake care of hem.

Tha means soring hem properly and no ossing hem mindlessly in he

botom of your purse or crowding hem ino your makeup bag. You also

need o wash hem on a regular basis, which well discuss shorly.Wha do you look for in a good brush? You wan a subsanial handle

ha feels good when you hold i, and here should be a generous number

of brisles. Run he brisles over he back of your hand and make sure hey

feel sof and secure. If a few hairs fall ou, has okay. Bu a brush

ha loses hairs every ime you use i? Thas no okay. Reurn i

and ask for a refund.

Also, you have wo choices when i comes o brisles: nau-

ral hair or synheic hair. Boh are grea opions and perform

equally well. Vegans and vegearians prefer he synheic

brushes. If ha is your preference, make sure o ask wha

he brisles are made of before you purchase.

If you can afford an enire collecion of nice brushes,

sar small wih a powder brush, a blush brush, andmaybe

my favoriea foundaion brush wih synheic brisles. I

use mine every ime I apply makeup. These hree essenials

are good invesmens, and youll be happy o have hem.

A FEW EXTRASI know several makeup ariss who love applying foundaion wih a

makeup sponge. These come in all sizes and shapes and range in price

from cheap o expensive. (Some of he inexpensive drugsore sponges are

grea, so don feel you need o spend a forune.) Wha you choose depends

on your personal preference. You can use he sponge eiher dry or damp.

Some ariss hink a damp sponge resuls in a nicer, smooher foundaion

applicaion, bu I find boh ways work equally well.Powder puffs can be used for powdering your face and blending your

blush. Mos pressed powders come wih a puff, bu heyre no always he

bes qualiy. However, heyre fine for litle ouch-ups hroughou he day.

Las, always have a few coton swabs on hand. These are essenial for

cleaning up iny misakes or perfecing lip liner or eyeliner applicaion.

When correcing any errors, use he swab dry, or dip i in some eye makeup

remover.

DIRTY BRUSHES? YUCK!When is he las ime you cleaned your makeup brushes?

I hope he answer isn never! You definiely need o

wash your brushes on a regular basis. I ge lazy abou

his and Im sure some of you do oo, bu is a prac-ice we all need o make a habi, jus like brushing our

eeh and aking off our makeup each nigh. Why? Two

reasons. Firs, dir, oil, and produc accumulae on our

brushes. Every ime we use hem, were redeposiing he

buildup on our skin, and has no a good hing, espe-

cially for hose of us prone o breakous. Second, you will

always ge a beter resul working wih clean ools. Every

painer knows ha o be rue.

You should give your brushes wha I call a spa rea-

men once every wo weeks, and more frequenly if pos-

sible. You don need o spend a lo of money on fancy

brush cleaner. All you need is exra-virgin olive oil and

anibacerial dishwashing soap. The oil is for recon-

diioning he brisles and he soap is for geting hem

clean. Jus pu he oil and soap on a plae and swirl your

dry brush hrough he wo ingrediens. You will see he

produc and pigmen coming righ off he brush and

ino he soap-oil mixure. Nex, wipe he brush back and

forh on he palm of your hand o remove more of he

produc and pigmen. Then run lukewarm waer over

he brush unil he waer runs clear. Your brushes will

look and feel brand-spanking new.

I acually learned his rick in an ar class when we

needed o clean oil pains from our brushes. If youve

worked wih his kind of pain, you know how difficul ican be o remove. The reason people have loved oil pain-

ings over he years is because he colors las he longes

compared o all oher pains. So you can imagine wha

happens when oil pain is on your painbrush! Is essen-

ial o clean hose brushes daily.

55owel o remove any excess waer. Dry hem upside down if you can, so

ha waer doesn seep ino he barrel. The brisles are held in place wih

glue and you don wan o loosen up he glue. Also, waer can cause warp-

ing and rusing, and you don wan o change he inegriy of he brush.

If upside down isn an opion, you can dry hem sideways. Juspu he brushes on a owel and le hem air-dry. Never use a

hair dryer or pu he brushes on a radiaor or heaed surface.

Synheic brisles end o dry quickly, bu naural brisles

ake longer. A large powder brush can ake a full day o dry;

smaller brushes will ake less ime. Keep ha in mind and

plan accordingly. You don wan o discover ha all of your

brushes are we when you need o do your makeup in a rush

or for an imporan occasion!

If you use sponges and puffs, don forge o wash hem on a regular

basis oo. A foaming face wash or genle baby shampoo is he bes opion.

Dishwashing deergen is oo harsh for hese iems.

My Evrydy RotneBefore we ge ino he deails of each par of he face, I hough Id alk

abou my daily makeup rouine. I apply my makeup in a specific order,

and Ill explain why. Then well alk more abou individual producs and

applicaion echniques.

BrowsI do this before eyes, lips, and cheeks because brows are the frame

for the face.

PrimerThis provides a base for my makeup and keeps it bulletproof all

day long.

FoundaionThis evens out my skin tone.

ConcealerThis covers any dark areas (such as under-eye circles) or red-

ness that my foundation doesnt.

PowderThis sets everything, reduces shine, and helps my makeup last.

Tp: Are your brusheslooking and feeling alitle grimy, bu you don have

ime for a proper cleaning?

Nex, I do whaever par of my face Im emphasizing ha day. If Im

doing a smoky eye, Ill do my eyes firs. If Im doing a beauifully lined dark

lip, Ill do ha firs. This way everyhing is in proporion. You wan o make

sure o balance your look. Tha means making one hing he focal poin on

your face and oning down everyhing else. For example, if you do a majoreye look, keep he lips and cheeks neural. Brigh red lips? Be suble wih

your eyes and cheeks. Is all abou he raio. You don wan o overwhelm

your face. When someone looks a you, his or her firs hough should never

be, Whoa. Thas a lo of makeup.

The very las hing I do is apply mascara. Is he final ouch, like seting

your hair wih hairspray.

Your everydaylook shouldlook as if youhad 10 hours ofsleep. Thank-fully we havemakeup here
