MAKE AN IMPACT Spanish is the fourth most widely spoken language in the world and the second most frequently used language in the United States. Reasons for studying Spanish range from practical application in careers, such as journalism, ministry and teaching, travel or recreation, to a curiosity about the culture or literature of Spanish-speaking countries. Simpson University’s Department of Communication & Modern Foreign Language offers a wide range of courses and programs designed to satisfy the varied needs of students who enter the Spanish major, Spanish journalism major, or Spanish minor.

YOUR CAREER BEGINS HEREProfi ciency in another language and understanding of other peoples and cultures are essential tools in many careers, such as teaching Spanish or English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), as well as with government agencies that employ those with Spanish-speaking ability in both civil service and diplomatic areas. Additionally, many fi elds that involve contact with the public will also require knowledge of Spanish. These types of public contact fi elds include law enforcement, medicine, banking, business, tourism, government, library positions, science, foreign affairs, public relations, journalism, advertising, secretarial work, missionary/ministerial assignments, and social services.
CORE COURSES FOR SPANISH LANGUAGE & CULTURE
¾ FILM IN SPAIN AND LATIN AMERICA : This course will examine a variety of fi lms that represent the cultural and linguistic diversity in areas of Spain and Latin America.
¾ ORAL COMMUNICATION IN SPANISH: An introduction to the Hispanic communication process, beginning with skills in interpersonal and small-group communication.
¾ COMMUNICATING CROSS-CULTURALLY: A study of the principles and processes of communicating from one culture or co-culture to another.
¾ ADVANCED SPANISH GRAMMAR: Intensive review of signifi cant systemic features of modern Spanish grammar, including morphology, syntax, and semantics.
¾ ADVANCED SPANISH COMPOSITION: Advanced instruction and practice of written Spanish through formal and informal composition, including conceptual and aesthetic dimensions of the writing process.
¾ CIVILIZATION AND CULTURE OF SPAIN: A study of Spanish culture of the past and present, with emphasis on literature, philosophy and the arts.
¾ CIVILIZATION AND CULTURE OF LATIN AMERICA: A study of Latin American culture of the past and present, with emphasis on literature, philosophy and the arts.
¾ LITERATURE OF SPAIN: A study of the important movements, authors and works in Spanish literature, from the Middle Ages to the present.
¾ LITERATURE OF LATIN AMERICA: A study of the important movements, authors and works in Latin American literature through the colonial, revolutionary and modern periods.
¾ SEMINAR IN SPANISH COMMUNICATION: CAPSTONE: An examination of specialized fi elds of Spanish communication.
