    Idea development

    In this project, I used 'environment protection' as the theme to produce an animation. Indeed,environment protection is a wide aspect, and it is good to concentrate on one specific area.Moreover, I would like to challenge the area of humoristic animation, which is a challenge Iwished to challenge myself before, it will be an experimental animation. There will be a

    character(s) to lead the progress of the story in general humour films and animations, Ibelieved it would be more efficient to create a small character(s) to my next animation. At the

    end, I decided to use 'do not littering on the top of rubbish bin', with two characters.

    Audience V.S. Animation

    Before creating the story, I was thinking "how to letpeople remember my animation?" One of the observationthat audience will still remember the film after they leavethe theatre is the strong impression of certain scene andthat is the image of the film. For example the bathroommurder scene in Psycho(Hichcock,1960 ). In myanimation, I believe the audience got the experience ofsaw someone littering on the top of bin in public area and

    go away. However, did anyone care the feeling of the bin?It is a simple directed storyline. Also, I designed the formof animationin 2D flat surface surreal style, and these are the smoke screen to create thestrong image of my film. Audience would expect the animation was targeted on children, oncontrast, this is an animation targeted on adult 18+. The expectation of the reaction of the

    audience after they watched it will be more consider on the behaviour of littering and theimportance of environment protection. Also, the consideration to the content of cartoon-like

    animation.

    Animation V.S. Narrative

    At the beginning, the story design was only lying on humor genre, however, in order to create a

    strong impression of the film, and also the concept of Mondo media, animation which targeted

    as teenagers and young adults such as Happy Tree Friends(Aubrey Ankrum, 1999), I tried tocombine 'humor', 'gangster' and 'horror' to see how is it going. The lecturers has a good

    feedback after they read the storyboard and the idea, the interaction of three different genres

    could be generated new entertainment to the audience rather than only based on one genre.

    Moreover, humor is not the area I am familiar to, therefore it is good to create with something

    I am good at.

    This is a story is concentrated on the interaction of two characters, the bin and the stickman. Itis about the bin get mad after the stickman littering on the top of it but not the proper area.

    After that, the bin takes revenge to Stickman. In between, Stickman will also make tricks on

    the bin as well. According to the experiences of last project, because of the not clear turning

    point and timing management, the outline of the narrative was not good enough to understand.

    Audience would be easily to understand the flow of the narrative because the obvious and clear

    key frames which helps to express the emotion to them.

    Character Design- Binny

    A little character referencing from a normal rubbish bin generally appear in public area. It isdesigned with human-like expression and two tentacles. He has many facial expression just

    similar with human, happiness, anger, sadness and he hates someone not following the rules.

    In the animation, the close up key frames of Binny's expression presented the strong

    expression of hates towards Stickman and the love of environment protection.

    Characteristic: Adorable outlook, environment protector, tentacles, smart, weapon investigator

    cruel, bloodthirsty, stingy

    Character Design- Stickman

    Basically it is referenced by the symbol of male toilet and the emergency exit. I was thinking to

    use something easy to be observed in the public area to create an "organic" atmosphere of theanimation. Just like the composition of the "rubbish gun". Because he was designed in no

    features on his face, body movement and behavior are the only ways to express his emotion,

    therefore in many key frames such as the bubble gum and mobile phone scene, it expressed

    the behavior of teenager and lacking of civic virtues to the environment.

    Characteristic: Teenager, obsessive cell phone use disorder, lack of civic virtues, irritable

    CinematographyIn the scene of targeting Stickman, it was referencing from the features of gangster film. It is

    generally using first person point of view to create the tension of the scene, and also to let

    audience engaged with the animation, just like the audience was targeting the character of the

    animation.

    For the scene of shooting Stickman, it is showed in frame-by-frame. The camera closed up to

    the shooting of the gun on the right side, and then a medium close up to Stickman behavior,

    then the explosion of the gum is also at the right side which reveal the shooting shot has been

    completed. The time-lapse between the shooting and explosion to let audience understand

    where the gun is pointing and also create tension between shot by shot.

    Background Design

    The background has been used 2D geometries for building design to generate surrealistic

    atmosphere to the scene. Also, a rough white paper used as the base layer to express the mood

    of happiness and simple, it is also present a concept of 2D animation is started with paper.

    Props Design

    It is referenced by Dragunov sniper svds (shortened variant with folding stock) rifle gun, a gun

    usually used by assassins to assassin the target from a distant point. The iron sight can be able

    to see maximum range of 1200m.In this case, the mechanical features of the rubbish gun has

    similar with the normal gun, the power of shooting can be penetrate the body of human

    although it is a composition of different kinds of rubbish. I have designed the bullets in tissue

    form initially and finally it had been cancelled because I would like to leave a space for

    audience to imagine it.

    Structure of the Rubbish gun

    Body and receiver: a used paper box,

    a rushed can

    Barrel: a straw and a red push pin for

    sight

    Barrel jacket: a dirty plastic

    transparent bottle

    Spectral scope: 4 paper rolls

    Magazine: a snake box

    Pistol grip: a toothbrush

    Editing and Time composition

    I used After Effects and Premiere Pro CC of Adobe to the edit of my scene. I have separated the

    entire animation into 8 parts after exported from Flash for easily to do the editing steps. For

    the movement of Binny chasing Stickman, in order to express the different speed of pace of it,first I created the movement of its legs with a green screen for colour key by Premiere. Then

    edited the position and speed on it. It is good to see the different expression of the character

    by its movement, the first one the characters move on the same place but the background is

    moving backward linearly to present the careful emotion of them; the second one shows the

    quick pace reveals the impatient emotion of Binny.

    Different parts of the animation has different duration, time duration helps to create the

    atmosphere of the story and create the tension between the action of characters and the

    reaction of audience. A fast time duration and the cut of frames usually presented the character

    has to make decision of their movement in a short time to accelerate the speed of story flow.

    In the story, the cut of scenes of killing Stickman are presented in less than 1s in close up shot

    on part of the characters. The last scene just slowly pan out from the body of Stickman. It is

    obviously to observe the difference of speed to express the emotion of the characters.

    Sound and music

    This is a no lines animation. Audience are able to understand the narrative through the

    performance of characters and the props inside the scene. Similar with "Minions", the

    characters is designed without any specific languages, however it is still a movie people are

    able to understand. It is obviously to see without the limit of languages, all people even around

    the world still able to get the messages from it, animation are not just relied on lines but the

    body performance of the characters. I was also used the sound such as "umm...", "hgh!" torecord the voice of the characters, without any specific languages. Audience are still able to get

    the messages from the narrative and other elements of it, in order to enlarge the imagination

    of audience to the animation.

    Final output

    I have rendered out in 1280x720pixels in mov. by Premiere Pro CC. Finally, it seems more

    suitable to be the web advertisement on the pages of environment protection organization. It

    is more easily to engage with audience to notice the importance of environment protectioncompare with a page of text, also if the advantage of upload to the website can attract more

    different age range audience as well. It is also a way to let people to notice the work and style

    I have done, which is a benefit for future career.
