    Major Problems of Pakistan

Over Population is major obstacle in Pakistan

If we glance through the history we find that the world has

developed a lot in every field. When in country, the size of pollutions great then the size ofavailable resources, than the country is called over populated. The total population of Pakistanwas 3.25 crore in 1947in the former West Pakistan. It rose to 6.551 crore in 1972. It has nowlaunched the figure of 14.59 crore on March 2002. Pakistan is the &the most populous countryin the world.

There are following conditions to define over population obstacle in Pakistan which wediscussed below:

Danger for Economic Development Low per capital income Low rate of saving Problems for education sector Housing problems Transportation problems Food shortage Population & Environment Population & capital formation Problems for agricultural sector Unemployment To provide more recreation Conclusion

Overpopulation is a great danger for economicdevelopment as it swallows up the progress made by the economic sector.

With the increase in population, there is low capital income in the country which badly effectsthe economy of the country. There per capita income of Pakistan is 479 dollars compared to27000 dollars in Japan and 14000 dollars in Singapore

When a country becomes overpopulated then its rate of saving becomes very low, as a result ofwhich there is low investment & unemployment in the country. The rate of saving in Pakistan inonly15% which is very low overpopulation creates a great problem of education sector becauseproper facilities are not available for whole of the population. Overpopulation also creates ahousing problem because given. Resources are not sufficient to proved houses to whole of thepopulation.

Over population also creates a problem of transportation because Govt. resources are notsufficient to provide better transport facilities to whole of the population whine a countrybecomes overpopulated, there is food shortage in the country because its resources are not

sufficient to meet the needs of the people. Overpopulation creates air, water & noise pollution inthe environment & in this way, badly effects the environment & in this way, badly effects theenvironment. When a country becomes overpopulated, than its rate of saving becomes very lowas a result of which rate of investment also falls which in return, reduces the capital formation inthe country. Our farmers are very poor & increased in population badly effects their financialposition because of this, they are not in a position to by modern technology & machinery or otheragricultural implements.

When a country becomes overpopulated, than its rate of savings also becomes very low as aresult of which there is low investment & unemployment in the country which badly affects theeconomy. Overpopulation can be controlled if most of the people are educated. Educated people

can easily understand and feel the benefits of family planning. It is of course the need of hour toeducate our masses.

As over population is swallowing up all the economic progress made by the country so the Govt.Of Pakistan is taking keen interest in solve the problem of over population by educating thepeople & making effective use of its resources. Every year a large sum of money is spend onpopulation planning programs to solve the problem of over population.

    The Overpopulation ThreatBy Aisha Tariq

Pakistan is one of the fastest growing countries in the world. In early 1994, the population ofPakistan was estimated to be 126 million, at that time we were the ninth most populous country

of the world, however, land area wise ranked thirty-second among nations. Thus Pakistan has about 2 percent of the worlds population living on less than 0.7 percent of theworlds land. The population growth rate is among the worlds highest, officially estimated at 3.1

percent per year, but privately thought to be closer to 3.3 percent per year by many plannersinvolved in population programs.

According to the latest surveys Pakistans population has reached up to 174.59 Million, if weinternationally weigh against the extensive growth rate in our population; we are ahead of Russiaand very slightly behind Brazil. By the year 2020 it is expected that our population will reach208 Million, hence curtailing our current resources. Still we have 20% of our population who is

living below international poverty line earning around 1.25 $ per day.The root cause of overpopulation is the unbalanced growth rate. In third world countries thebasic awareness among the common people is lacking, which is the fundamental reason ofoverpopulation. Governments have very few budgets to educate the people all over the countryabout the disadvantages of extra ordinary birth rate. In this way majority of the people remainuneducated regarding the adequate methods of birth control.

Although everyone is facing the resulted problems of overpopulation at individual level but veryfew people are aware regarding the proper course of action to respond to this matter. A verycommon trend for the people is to move towards cities from villages, in this way, rural land is

remained unused and cities become crowded having high density of people per square feet. Thispractice not only affects the efficient operation of the system in cities but it also makes thegovernments to neglect the rural lands to develop.

It very badly decreases the agricultural growth, resulting in the drastically over the economy ofthe country. When wealth is scarce and consumers are in a large amount, obviously equity indistribution of resources is always missing. This makes the people frustrated and outcomes arevery frightening, youth which is called as the life blood of a country starts involving ininappropriate ways to snatch the resources. It increases crime rate in a big deal, it has beenobserved that the countries which have balanced population, crime rate is very low in suchregions. When people are not provided with the basic necessities, it elevates crime rate due todrug cartels and increases theft by people stealing resources to survive.

After the earthquake of October 11, 2005, that killed 79000 people according to official deathpolls. It was discovered that Pakistan is situated on the most dangerous earth plate which can beaffected very badly anytime due to earthquakes. Overpopulation does not allow the governmentto establish the cities and villages in a planned and organized way, in such condition naturaldisaster management agencies cannot respond to the potential loss. It is said that earthquakesdoes not kill the people, mismanagement kills the people which is the result of overpopulation.

Atmosphere and climate is also badly affected by overpopulation, in overpopulated areas theconsumption of energy goods like, petroleum, electricity and coal is very high, which results intopollution which eventually affects the climate. Pollution badly influences on the health of people, and the hospital and other health institutions in Pakistan have very limited capacity toaccommodate the patients.

The latest analysis indicate that in 2007 there were 85 physicians for every 100,000 persons inPakistan. Alternatively we can say that one doctor is available for 1,225 people. In comparison tomost underdeveloped countries, we a have a shortage of nurses and there are only 62,651 nursesall over the nation who are supplemented with a strong force of 96,000 Lady Health Workers(primary health care providers).

According to the latest Ministry of Health Pakistan statistics, there were 13,937 healthinstitutions in the country including 945 hospitals (with a total of 103,285 hospital beds), 4,755dispensaries, 5,349 Basic Health Units (mostly in rural areas), 903 Mother and Child CareCenters, 562 rural health centers and 290 TB centers.

When the growth rate is very high, it results in high child mortality, Seventy infants out of onethousand dies due to different reasons, which are mainly, the inadequate facilities provided inhospitals due to load of too many delivery cases, vulnerability of the child due to bad cures, lackof skilled technical staff in hospitals, lack of proper food, and the most important is the weakhealth of the mother.

The uncontrollably increasing population is the basic running force of this issue. Poverty highlyincreases the child mortality ration, an individual citizens poverty results in the poverty of thewhole country. In frenziedly populated countries the life expectancy ratio is very low, as per thelatest statistics Pakistan has 64.6 as life expectancy ratio of an individual, whereas Japan has

82.3, the difference is very clear. The major reason behind this considerable gap is the difference between the population andavailable resources of these two countries. Overpopulation restrains the literacy in the country,Pakistan, a developing country, has very few funds and capital for educational development. Ithas been 62 years since Pakistan has come into existence; still our literacy rate is below 50%which is far less than India, Sri lanka, Turkey and Brazil.

In over occupied areas unclean living conditions which are based upon water resource reduction, discharge of raw dirt and solid waste disposal increase the chance of the emergence of newepidemics and pandemics. For many environmental and social reasons, including overcrowdedliving conditions, malnutrition and inadequate, inaccessible, or non-existent health care; the poorare more likely to be exposed to infectious diseases.

World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11, which aims to elevate awarenessof global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the UnitedNations Development Programme, in 1989. It was stimulated by the public interest in FiveBillion Day on July 11, 1987, the date on which the worlds population reached around fivebillion people.

In current year the subject matter of the world population day is Investing in Women is a Smart

Choice. Funding in education and health for women considerably increase output of the wholemass, farming yields, and state income, all of which adds to the accomplishment of the balancedPopulation.

Investments by governments worldwide have boosted school admission rates and promoted theprevention of lethal diseases like malaria, tuber clauses and HIV Aids. We expect that this yearthis convention will bring extra ordinary attentiveness among the people of Pakistan, and we willourselves manage out our overpopulation issue by bringing economy efficiency andeffectiveness among the processes and policies.

Overpopulation is a condition where anorganism's numbers exceed thecarrying capacityof itshabitat. The term often refers to the relationship between thehuman populationand itsenvironment, the Earth.[1]Steve Jones, head of the biology department atUniversity CollegeLondon, has said, "Humans are 10,000 times more common than we should be, according to therules of the animal kingdom, and we have agriculture to thank for that. Without farming, theworld population would probably have reached half a million by now."[2]The worlds populationhas significantly increased in the last 50 years, mainly due tomedical advancementsandsubstantial increases inagriculturalproductivity.

The recent rapid increase in human population over the past two centuries has raised concernsthat humans are beginning to overpopulate the Earth, and that the planet may not be able tosustain present or larger numbers of inhabitants. Though, this is not a general consensus in thescientific community. The population has been growing continuously since the end of theBlackDeath, around the year 1400;[3]at the beginning of the 19th century, it had reached roughly1,000,000,000 (1 billion). Increases in medical technology have led to rapid population growthon a worldwide level. Current projections show a steady decline in the population growth rate, with the populationexpectedto reach between 8 and 10.5billionbetween the year 2040[4][5]and

TheInterAcademy PanelStatement on Population Growth, which was ratified by 58 membernational academiesin 1994,called the growth in human numbers "unprecedented", and stated that many environmentalproblems, such as rising levels ofatmospheric carbon dioxide, global warming, andpollution, were aggravated by the population expansion.[7]At the time, the world population stood at 5.5billion, and low-bound scenarios predicted a peak of 7.8 billion by 2050, a number that currentestimates show will be reached around 2022.[8]

    [edit] Definition

Overpopulation does not depend only on the size or density of the population, but on the ratio ofpopulation to available sustainable resources. It also depends on the way resources are used anddistributed throughout the population. Overpopulation can result from an increase inbirths, adecline inmortality ratesdue tomedical advances, from an increase inimmigration, or from anunsustainablebiomeand depletion of resources. It is possible for very sparsely populated areasto be overpopulated, as the area in question may have a meager or non-existent capability tosustain human life (e.g. adesert).

The resources to be considered when evaluating whether anecologicalniche is overpopulatedincludeclean water, clean air, food, shelter, warmth, and other resources necessary to sustainlife. If the quality of human life is addressed, there may be additional resources considered, suchas medical care, education, propersewage treatmentandwaste disposal. Overpopulation placescompetitive stress on the basic life sustaining resources,[9]leading to a diminished quality oflife.[10]

    [edit] History of concern

Concern about overpopulation is relatively recent in origin. Throughout history, populationshave grown slowly despite highbirth rates, due to the population-reducing effects of war, plaguesand highinfant mortality. During the 750 years before theIndustrial Revolution, the

world's population hardly increased, remaining under 250 million.[11]

By the beginning of the 19th century, the world population had grown to a billion individuals, and intellectuals such asThomas Malthusandphysiocraticeconomists predicted that mankindwould outgrow its available resources, since a finite amount of land was incapable of supportingan endlessly increasing population.Mercantillistsargued that a large population was a form ofwealth, which made it possible to create biggermarketsand armies.

    Data fromWorld Population.

A population pyramid based on the 2011 Libyan population.

The human population has gone through a number of periods of growth since the dawn ofcivilizationin theHoloceneperiod, around 10,000BC. The beginning of civilization coincideswith the final receding ofglacial icefollowing the end of thelast glacial period.[citation needed] It is

estimated that about 1,000,000 people, subsisting onhuntingandforaging, inhabited the Earth inthe period before theneolithic revolution, when human activity shifted away fromhunter-gatheringand towardsvery primitive farming.[citation needed]

Around 8000 BCE, at thedawn of agriculture, the population of the world was approximately 5million.[12]The next several millennia saw minimal changes in the population, with a steadygrowth beginning in 1000 BCE, plateauing (or alternatively, peaking) in 1 BCE, at between 200and 300 million people. ThePlague of JustiniancausedEurope's populationto drop by around50% between 541 and the 8th century.[13]Steady growth resumed in 800 CE.[14]This growth wasdisrupted by frequentplagues; most notably, theBlack Deathduring the 14th century. Theeffects of the Black Death are thought to have reduced the world's population, then at an

estimated 450 million, to between 350 and 375 million by 1400.[15]The population of Europestood at over 70 million in 1340;[16]these levels did not return until 200 years later.[17]

On the other side of the globe, China's population at the founding of theMing dynastyin 1368stood close to 60 million, approaching 150 million by the end of the dynasty in 1644.[18][19]

England's population reached an estimated 5.6 million in 1650, up from an estimated 2.6 millionin 1500.[20]New crops that had come to Asia and Europe from the Americas via the Spanishcolonizers in the 16th century contributed to the population growth.[21][22]

Since being introduced by Portuguese traders in the 16th century,[23]maizeandmaniochave

replaced traditional African crops as the continent's most important staple food crops.[24]

Alfred W. Crosbyspeculated that increased production of maize, manioc, and other Americancrops "...enabled theslave traders[who] drew many, perhaps most, of their cargoes from the rainforest areas, precisely those areas where American crops enabled heavier settlement thanbefore."[25]

The population of theAmericasin 1500 may have been between 50 and 100 million.[26]

Encounters between European explorers and populations in the rest of the world often introducedlocalepidemicsof extraordinary virulence. Archaeological evidence indicates that the death ofaround 90% of theNative American populationof theNew Worldwas caused byOld Worlddiseases such assmallpox, measles, and influenza.[27]

Over the centuries, the Europeans had developed high degrees of immunity to these diseases, while the indigenous peoples had no such immunity.[28]

After the effects of the plagues had subsided during the 17th century, shortly before theIndustrial Revolution, the world population began to grow once again. In parts of Asia, like China, the population doubled from 60 to 150 million under theMing dynasty[citationneeded].

After the start of the Industrial Revolution, during the 18th century, the rate of populationgrowth began to increase. By the end of the century, the world's population was estimatedat just under 1 billion.[29]

At the turn of the 20th century, the world's population was roughly 1.6 billion.

    [29]

By1940, this figure had increased to 2.3 billion[citation needed]. Dramatic growth beginning in 1950 (above 1.8% per year) coincided with greatly

increased food production as a result of the industrialisation of agriculture brought aboutby theGreen Revolution.[30]The rate of growth peaked in 1964, at about 2.2% per year.

The world population was at some point in 2010 estimated to be 6,926,100,000, withunreportedvariability.[31]

    Africa - 133 million

    Asia - 946 million Europe - 408 million Latin America & Caribbean - 74 million North America - 82 million[32]

[edit] 1960s to 2010 table of population growth

Many of the world's countries, including many in Sub-SaharanAfrica, theMiddle East,SouthAsiaandSouth East Asia, have seen a sharp rise in population since the end of theCold War.The fear is that high population numbers are putting further strain on natural resources, foodsupplies, fuel supplies, employment, housing, etc.; in some the less fortunate countries. The

populationofChadhas, for example, ultimately grown from 6,279,921 1993 to 10,329,208 in2009,[33]further straining its resources.Vietnam,Mexico,Nigeria,Egypt,Ethiopiaand theDRCare witnessing a similar growth in population, strained resources and a possible overpopulationproblem in the near future.

The situation was most acute in northern, western and centralAfrica. Refugees from places liketheSudanhave helped further strain the resources of neighbouring states like the Chad andEgypt. The nation is also host to roughly 255,000refugeesfrom SudansDarfurregion, and
