They went with songs to the battle, they were young.Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun andin the morning,We will remember them.

A warm welcome to Burnage today who were onceregular visitors to Bingley in the olden days beforeleagues and collar-less jerseys. As well as todaysencounter we look forward to the return fixture whenwe will be playing on the only artificial pitch in theleague. Our opponents last week at Rossendale were fullof praise for the Burnage playing surface and we hopefor a similar true and fair rub of the green here today.
We had the great pleasure in hosting Shaun Edwards fora coaching session a few days ago. His visit coincidedwith his leaving of Wasps and so was covered by apaparazzi-like Sky Sports crew. Shaun's advice wasrefreshingly positive: Rugby is a simple game and if youpractise over and over again you will get better at it.As in life.
Enjoy the game, enjoy the day.
WELCOME

WHITCOMBE’S VIEW
“Unfortunately, we find ourselvesin a similar boat today as wereturn from an away game wherewe couldn’t get the rightresult”
The last home game we came here to the Hive onthe back of a very disappointing loss on the road atHartlepool, but I’d like to think we restored a bit ofpride and got ourselves going in the right directionwith a good win over Sandal. Unfortunately, we findourselves in a similar boat today as we return froman away game where we couldn’t get the rightresult. However, for those of you who made thetrip across to Lancashire, I am sure you will agreethat many aspects of the boys’ performance werevery good and we won enough territory andpossession to have come away with league points. On a positive note, our pack was equal to theRossendale eight and I believe they are the bestforwards we will face this season. They are verywell drilled by my old mate Tim Fourie andalthough Tim is possibly not the best player on thepark anymore, he remains one of the mostinfluential forwards and his side play wellaround him.
Looking at our own players, James Brown’sperformances are very consistent and belie his ageand he has come through in just under a year sincemaking his debut against Keighley to be a first teamregular. If there is a lock with a better all roundgame than Brett Mitchell at this level I would bevery surprised. His contribution to the team getsbetter every week, and I feel that he is, without adoubt, a future Captain of the Club. It continues tobe a problem for us that we are not picking up thebonus points on offer and it is something we needto address. Success and failure in this division seemsto hang on the smallest of margins and everyone inthe squad knows that we need to get points on theboard if we dominate a game for a twenty minute
period like we did in both halves on Saturday.Even at a conservative estimate I think we have leftaround five bonus points on the pitch this season, which is surprising in some ways as only Waterloowere better than us at picking up the bonuses lastseason where we collected 17 in our 26 fixtures. However one area where we are not excelling isthe collection of yellow cards and giving away sillypenalties. This is one area where we have reallyimproved and I am pleased that the boys have beenmuch better at keeping their discipline around therucks and mauls.
Outside the first team, things continue to go verywell for the Second and Third team squads. The Second team won by 31 points to five overHull Ionians and with a game in hand they stand justbehind Wharfedale who are second, withundefeated Scunthorpe on top. The Tigers sit ontop of their ladder having not lost yet in acompetitive fixture this season. I know I say thisevery week but Steve Balmforth and Dave Morrisare doing a fabulous job with their squads and Iknow from the feedback I am getting from theother coaches who watch the Second team thatthere are players who can step up into the firstteam. It is evident that we are developing realcompetition for a place in the team now and that’sreal progress.
I’d like to finish up this week on a slightly moreserious note as it is Remembrance Sundaytomorrow. As a former serving member of theRoyal Air Force could I just ask everyone here torecognise the day and if you haven’t already boughtone, would you please buy a poppy from theclubhouse and support the lads, they need yourhelp more than ever. I really appreciateyour support.
Enjoy your day, enjoy the rugbyMartin

SCOOPS DOGGEREL“Burnage and Bingley wereonce regular combatants on thefield of honour”So here we are on the verge of the Christmastyranny, the 316th day of 2011 and the first visitto The Hive of Burnage Rugby Club since 1982in our history as a combined club, I believe I amtold by those with grey at the temples, greyerbeards and a faraway look in their eyes thatBurnage and Bingley were once regularcombatants on the field of honour, but alas, dearreader, of these epic battles there is noimmediate record. The one thing that everyonedoes seem to know of today’s opponents is thatthey own the only “plastic pitch” in the division. Icould cut and paste an explanation of thetechnology behind their 3G pitch, but if you arethat interested I am sure you can look it up onthe old t’interweb without me boring any morefolk to death than is absolutely necessary.
Anyway, in the pursuit of our mutual edification Isent Muriel and the elves a-googling andwiki-searching for some Burnagerie that mightmake our six hundred and fifty words togetherjust that bit brighter. Unfortunately all that couldbe scraped from Wikipedia was that the name ofthe district could be a corruption of “BrownHedge”, but even that was not a definitive pearlof wisdom, it was only a “could”. How very dullI’m sure you all already know those cheekyGallaghers, little Noel and Liam, famously hailfrom the borough… but in 2011, frankly, whocares about Beady Eyes and High Flying Birds? AsI can’t unveil an in depth history of the Burnageclub, I will have a rummage about in their seasonso far to see what we can glean.
You will have no doubt have already navigated tothe league table and will have seen Burnage’srecord includes two wins at home and one onthe road. In their six homes games they havenotched 120 points, but conceded 10 more; onthe road they have accrued 72 and shipped 104.
The 192 points that Burnage have scored can bebroken down as 23 tries, 11 conversions, 15penalties and one penalty try. 16 of their 24 trieshave come through the forwards with 9 of thosescored by the second row men, with Phil Edgeleading the way with five on his back and fivescores to his name. Burnage’s top scorer iscentre Adam Knight who has totted up 68 pointsin the 10 matches played.
As a contrast, The Bees’ 252 points this seasonhave been garnered through 33 tries, 2 penaltytries, 22 conversions and 11 penalties. GavinStead continues to head the points scoringcharge with 115 thus far. Gavin is also secondbehind Penrith’s James Ellar in the try scoringtable with eight five pointers, but the Bees dohave two other players in the Top 15 as GuyFord has now dotted down 6 times and GilesHetherington 5.
It might be easy to assume that Burnage’ssuccesses have come purely because of the oldplastic pitch which is an advantage to theBurnage squad as they know how to play it.This might be too convenient an explanation asthey began the season at a sprint with a decentwin over Beverley at home followed by animpressive victory of Waterloo on the road. This excellent start to the season pushed thenewly promoted side into second spot after twogames played, but a run of five defeats saw themslump to 10th in the table until a good winagainst Morley on October 22nd turned thingsaround slightly. Since that 28-22 success, twofurther defeats have followed, with Lymmgetting the “W” by 20 points to 14 and then lastweek, Chester getting back to winning ways witha 31-18 success on the plastic.

Former Bradford RFC forward ColinHeighton sadly died on the 6th October.Colin famously captained Yorkshire in thecounty championship final of 1963 but playedfor Yorkshire many times whilst at Bradfordand subsequently at Sheffield RFU. Colin wasmarried to Pamela and they lived morelatterly near St Davids in Pembrokeshire. Our thoughts are with Colins family at thisdifficult time.
