Have you ever been to a movie that bored you to tears? What if it was themost original thing that you had seen in a long time? How about thosemovies that seem to echo all of the same storylines, and yet you cant walkaway from them?

Theres a reason that a lot of the most successful movies today look similarbecause it works. Screenwritersstrive for originality in the makeup of characters and setting, but most plotlines, regardless of genre, followthe same basic structure. The trick is to keep the audience engaged in your lm, so that they keep watching tothe end. Regardless of whether the heroine is running from zombies or towards Romeo, here are a few of theelements that almost every successful lm has.

The Hook: The hook comes just a few minutes into the movie. After the audience has been introduced to themain characters world, something enters that world that throws it o balance. This hooks the audience into

the action, making them follow the protagonists quest to set his world back in balance.

The Midpoint: This comes, as you might guess, in the middle of the lm. The midpoint is when the charactersneed to rebalance his world changes direction or is refocused. This is sometimes done by introducing a newcharacter or a new plot twist.

The Crisis: When all hope is lost, we have hit our crisis. The protagonist has to come within ngertip reach of his goal and then lose all hope. The crisis forces him or her to take action. This usually comes very, very close tothe end of the movie, leaving the writer little time to resolve the complex issues but keeping the audience fullyengaged in what is happening and surprised by the outcomes.

The Climax: This is the nal showdown, in which the problems are at last resolved in as dramatic a fashion atpossible. After the climax, the world of the lm is returned to normal and the character is able to go home insome way. Even if her home has been washed away by a controlled tsunami.

Though there are other turning points to lms and other key points to characters, these four plot points arevital to any story. Aspiring screenwriters often fail because they dont know how to move their story forwardalong these plotlines.

Film is not the only medium to utilize these plot points, but it takes its storytelling capacity from manydi erent traditions tracing back to the ancient oral storytellers. Some audiences, it seems, never change.

Next time that you head to the theaters, keep these points in mind. I guarantee that you will nd them in thelm youre watching. If you connect the dots enough, who knows? You might nd that the story you could

never put together now ts somehow.

Its a tough economy out there these days, notto mention the electricity bill, and if Mel Guapowants to make it as a writer in this crazy, lustfulcity, then it looks like hes going to have to expandhis horizons.

Thats what was going through my head at lastWednesdays sta meeting, back when I still thought it was a good idea to dothe feature on the Cleveland County Free Fair. I began my inquiry into the subject on the internet, naturally. What I foundthere wasnt exactly clear, but it was a solid lead.

Culinary AdventuresFair Food is Fun FoodWhats on Kellis mind as she travels through a fair.

    By KelliNicole

Though the carnival rides and livestock shows are a big draw, we really just go to the fair for the food.

With the Cleveland County Free Fair, Oklahoma State Fair, Texas State Fair and other outdoor festivitiescoming up, all I could think of was the food that presents itself at these extravaganzas!

Let me explain this food: greasy, fried and delicious. When I go to these fairs, carnivals or rodeos (tis true,I am a Texan), I always look for the craziest things to eat. So far, the most unrealistic is deep-fried beer andKool-Aid. How is that even done?! The oddest dish has been deep-fried alligator (in Texas, no doubt!).

Some of the foods you can nd at a fair that arent fried would be loaded nachos, caramel apples and cottoncandy. I must say Im a big fan of loaded nachos, and sometimes I like to buy a big ol Philly cheesesteaksandwich.

When I head down to Dallas for OU vs. TX, I keep an eye out for deep-fried biscuits and gravy, and the ever-loving FUNNEL CAKE! My love for funnel cakes is larger than the sun in the sky. Anytime I go to an outdoorevent, I get myself a tasty, sugary funnel cake, and I am not ashamed to admit that I eat it all on my own.

Once I noticed all the weird fried options at fairs, I started thinking about what they could fry that hasntbeen done yet. Possibly involving fruit, like a fried fruit kabob, or maybe fried sandwiches. Instead of usingbread, they could take the inside contents of a sandwich, cover them in batter somehow, and deep-fry it! Orwhat about taking molasses and guring out how to fry that!

But for now, I think Im going to stick with funnel cakes.

Directions:1. Mix salt, baking powder, and hal the our in abowl. Set aside.2. Mix eggs, sugar and milk into a cream in a largebowl. Add our mixture and beat until smooth.Continue to add remaining our, but use only enoughto achieve desired consistency. Batter will be thinenough to run through a unnel.3. Heat the oil to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) in an8-inch skillet.4. Put your fnger over the bottom opening o the

unnel, and fll the unnel with a generous 1/2 cup o the batter. Hold the unnel close to the sur ace o theoil, and release the batter into the oil while making acircular motion. Fry until golden brown. Use tongsand wide spatula to turn the cake over care ully. Frythe second side one minute. Drain on paper towels, and sprinkle with si ted con ectioners sugar.

could you use a unnel orthe unnel cake recipe,

    CrossNorman No

This version o the Crosstown Clash was more than just a clash; it wasone o the most exciting ootball games, period, I have ever seen. Theyoung men were engaged in an epic battle or city dominance, and asclich as it sounds, you hate to see anyone lose a game like that. Thestands at Gaylord Memorial Stadium were lled with orange, greenand black as the Tiger Nation and the Timberwolves Pack o Fans wentthrough an emotional roller coaster that sent their spirits soaring andcrashing multiple times in the nal two minutes.

In a rivalry game such as this, young men leave their mark on the citythey play in; the school they represent and play or will be talked about

orever. A beauti ul night in Norman set the stage or what would bean amazing ootball game. The eld was a per ect green, looking likea huge piece o well-decorated cake. Lined up or the upcoming OU

ootball season, the large crimson OU at mid- eld and Oklahomaoutlined in each end zone proved the stadium was ready to host thisbattle o crosstown rivals.

The preseason talk had many people eeling that Norman Northshould be a avorite this year. A senior-packed team, this de ensehad stufed the early crowned best-o -the-West Edmond Santa Fe ina scrimmage. Norman High had senior leaders returning as well, justnot as many as North. With Norman High coming in riding a two-game winning streak in the clash, all was set or an all-timer, and thegame did not disappoint.

The rst hal o the game was anything but normal or expected. Highquarterback Zach Long, a three-year starter, hit Jaykob Dean or a47-yard touchdown to put the Tigers up early. Norman Norths onlyscore in the rst hal came a ter a well-designed ake punt that almostworked to per ection. The Timberwolves took over on the Tiger 29and Tyler Sipe caught a pass and rumbled in or a touchdown. The Tigers showed great poise at the end o the rst hal in executing aper ect two-minute drill, and with time winding down Norman Highkicker Matt Hockett raced on to the eld and calmly booted a short

    n Clash. Norman High

Little did we know up in the broadcast booth what was ahead o us.An exciting second hal capped of by the up and down lead changinglast minute and a hal o action. Norman North controlled the secondhal and both teams had opportunities slip right through their hands.Norman High only managed one rst down until their nal drive o the second hal , and the Timberwolves made the bigger plays withan interception by DJ Hicks, a touchdown by Peyton Prince to givethe Timberwolves a 17-13 lead and the Tigers 66 yards away rom thelead and possible win. Zach Long, Aerion Hines and Imond Robinson, with the help o a questionable late hit call on Jordan Evans led up toa ourth down and our rom the Norman North 7-yard line.

A time out and the two teams jogged back on to the eld, both sidescheering, ans hands clasped together in prayer or their team to havethat little advantage. A per ect call by the Tiger coaches had a ullback eld and a per ect pass rom Long to Dean gave the Tigers thelead or what many thought was the nal time at 20-17 with just undera minute and a hal le t.

What happened next was something only seen in movies. JordanEvans, a linebacker/de ensive end back to return a kick picks upa squib kick and weaves his way 71 yards to the Tiger 19-yard line, and the green-clad ans who moments be ore were in the pits oundthemselves joyous and bouncing. Channing Meyer punched in thego-ahead touchdown on a 19-yard quarterback keeper giving the Timberwolves a 24-20 lead. Still, up in the booth I had the eeling thisone was not quite over yet. The Tigers got one more shot at victoryand marched to mid- eld be ore a ourth-down pass was interceptedby senior linebacker Beau Proctor who raced 60 yards to the house toice the Clash or the Timberwolves.

In closing, what I take rom this game -- both teams are good. Verygood. Norman High and Norman North both have players that le ttheir mark on this rivalry and this game in particular. High ans andNorth ans, get ready or an exciting year. I eel both teams will makeplayof runs this year, and yes there is a chance how crazy would itbe i yet again we have the Crosstown Clash in the playofs! Buckle upand enjoy.
