Welcome to Maidstone Gang Show 2013! On behalf of the Gang I would like to say a massive thank you for joining us at the Hazlitt this year. Yet again the team and I have had the pleasure of working with an amazing group of talented people both on stage and behind the scenes. Every year I’m astounded how much effort and commitment the cast and crew put into the show alongside their school work, careers and weekly Scouting activities.

I would also like to recognise the hard work that has been put into the show by the huge team of people who have worked tirelessly since 2011. Planning, preparing, choreographing, editing, producing, writing, cutting, sewing, painting, writing letters, selling tickets, producing accounts.....the list goes on.Without them tonight’s show would not have been possible. THANK YOU!

Gang Show has an aim to increase self confi dence, develop a sense of belonging, encourage team spirit, and to provide an atmosphere of enjoyment and fun. These are opportunities that unfortunately not every young person has. This year the ‘Gang’ is proud to have Dandelion Time as it’s Gala Night charity, and Maidstone Young Carers as our chosen charity for the remainder of the week. Both are charities which support young people at diffi cult times of their lives. At the end of the performance there will be a retiring collection to support the valuable work that these charities do, please show your support...

So tonight the ‘Gang’ invite you to sit back, cheer, clap, and sing along as they share with you the 2013 show!

Dandelion Time

Restoring hope to young lives. Established in 2003, Dandelion Time is a charitable project based in West Farleigh for children and young people struggling with signifi cant behavioural, emotional, or social diffi culties resulting from abuse, neglect or trauma. Children may be displaying emotional distress through aggressive or withdrawn behaviour, their issues having led to confl ict at home and withdrawal or exclusion from school.

We provide practical farm-based developmental activities and a therapeutic service to help children overcome past suffering, develop in confi dence and self-esteem and discover a new and positive path to follow. Our aim is to improve each child’s emotional wellbeing and resilience so they are better able to lead full and happy lives and be a positive force within their communities as they enter adulthood.

If you want to support us, there are many ways you can do it…

You can ‘Do it for Dandelion!’If you would like to raise money for us then join in and ‘Do it For Dandelion! 63 people and groups have already ‘Done it for Dandelion’ by organising a cake sale, a walk, a concert, a run…

Come up with an idea and make it happen! Visit our website on www.dandeliontime.org.uk for more information and hope you will get inspired!

Each and every ‘Do it For Dandelion’ is celebrated on our website and on our ‘Wall of Fame’ at Dandelion Time.

What will be yours?

We are hugely grateful to the Maidstone Scout Gang Show for supporting us in 2013

The Maidstone Gang Show has chosen to support two charities during show week. Tuesday’s special “Gala Night” collection will benefi t Dandelion Time and retiring collections on Wednesday to Saturday will go to Crossroads Care West Kent Young Carers Project.

Thank you for your generosity

Scouting is an adventure, and at its best when exciting, involves trying new things and meeting new people, making new friends and when FUN! For more than 80 Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Network Scouts, leaders and other adults, this Gang Show has been a major part of their Scouting adventure since November last year. They have worked together to make this the best show possible and formed new friendships that will last for many years to come, whilst still having fun.

For a large number of the Gang, this week will be the fi rst time they have ever performed in a theatre to an audience - if you’ve never tried it yourself, you probably can’t imagine how scary that can be, nor how amazing the feeling is at the end of the performance.

To enable young people to have these opportunities, it takes a huge amount of work from a large number of adults, all of whom deserve our thanks - the parents and guardians who ferried children to rehearsals every week for seven months; the team who made the costumes and props; the backstage crew; the Production Team who have been working on this show since before the curtain went down on the previous show two years ago; and everyone else who have supported the Show. On behalf of all of the Gang we would like to thank these people.

We hope by the end of the performance today you will agree with us - Maidstone Gang Show is a fantastic example of Scouting at its best.

Crossroads Care West Kent Young Carers Project

Crossroads Care West Kent Young Carers Project is delighted to have been chosen by the Gangthis year and we thank everyone for their support.

As a charity we offer help and support for children and young people who care for someone in their family.Often these young people have responsibilities beyond their maturity. They might help to look after a parent, brother or sister who has a disability, illness, mental health condition,or drug or alcohol problem. Sometimes, the young person is the primary carer for that person.

We work to relieve stress on young carers and their families and give young carers opportunities to have time to themselves. Providing someone to talk to who will listen and understand to their problems. Your support tonight will help give a chance for young carers to meet with others, have fun and learn

that they are not alone.

The original Gang Show was the idea of Ralph Reader CBE, whose shows wereperformed in London and in cities and towns across the country. It is now said that ‘Every night of every year, somewhere in the world Gang Show is playing’.Tonight is our night!

The fi rst Gang Show was staged in London in 1932 in the West End and continued for many years. Last year was the 80th Anniversary of Scout Gang Shows and six cast members from Maidstone Gang Show took part in the anniversary show at the Hippodrome in Birmingham.

Maidstone has had a Gang Show as early as 1939 but during the war it was laid

to rest. It was re-born in 1969 when a trial show was performed during the

District AGM at Oakwood Park School. This was followed by the fi rst

full Gang Show at the Hazlitt Theatre in 1970.

Maidstone Gang Show has run continuously since 1970. The early shows were based

on the traditional Ralph Reader Gang Shows, using only his original songs, sketches

and an all male cast! Over the years we have endeavoured to keep the Show fresh,

with new material and a modern look. But we still keep true to the traditions of

Gang Show, including Crest of the Wave - the signature tune of Gang Shows.

The Gang Show in Maidstone has been fortunate in that many cast members have

returned to take part in further shows in order to provide experience and help to

the cast members who are in their fi rst show. Many producers of the show were once

part of the cast and have then returned to produce shows in subsequent years.
