Research objective:

To know about the NGO - How, when, where and why it started? What kind

of social work they do and how they work in India.

To relate and study Mahiti Rural development Centre (NGO) functioning

with HRM and operations theories.

To study the managerial aspects of Mahiti Rural development Centre.

Mahiti Rural Development centre is an independent, non-governmental, social development organization.

Mahiti is working in Bhal region since 1994

Groups are organized in villages and their issues are taken

on common platform. Groups from neighboring villages

support social cause where as activities are supported by

Two Apex Womens Cooperatives (Federation). This is

visible in interventions like watershed, drinking water, social

injustice, micro finance, sanitation, health etc.

y To empower women and youth by strengthening leadership for effective

political participation and to fight against social injustice

control over natural resources for the marginalized communities.

Condition of the Region

y Mahiti is working in Bhal region since 1994 as a grassroots NGO. The inception

and existence of Mahiti is derived out of complexities of Bhal. Mahiti is working

in Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar districts of this region and have plans to expand to

other districts covering more than 20,000 families in near future. The

Womens Savings and Credit Cooperatives Federations ofSelf

Help Groups

To encourage women to become more financially independent, Mahiti has

promoted the two womens cooperatives - Bhal Womens Savings and Credit

Cooperative Society Limited in Ahmedabad district and Bhal Womens Jagruti

Savings and Credit Cooperative Society Limited in Bhavnagar district - a federation

of exclusively womens self help groups for easy access of communities to avail credit

and avoid cumbersome banking procedures, Mahiti worked out an alternative banking

system,

Natural Resource Management

y At Mahiti, natural resource management is an integrated concept. One that

involves work on agriculture, soil & water conservation, drinking water

resources management, animal husbandry, grazing land development, social

forestry etc all of which is undertaken with the communities.

y Since its inception, Mahiti has been working on rehabilitating and

constructing natural resources with the help of watershed committees, water

committees and user groups. In view of changing scenario of climatic

changes, industrial development, demarcation of Special Economic Zones

(SEZ), Special Investment Region (SIR), emergence of irrigation projects

like Kalpasar,

Mahiti has geared up to further enhance its capacity and reach in undertaking

programs on soil conservation and improvement, animal husbandry, drinking water

resource management and sanitation through empowering communities via Gram

Sabhas, trainings, exposures, linkages with Stakeholders. Following paragraphs

Community health care

y Training Women Health Workers & Midwife

Since 1999, the efforts are being made to develop a grass root level health

system and link it up with the Government managed health servicedelivery system. In 49 villages, village level Women Health Workers

(WHWs) and Traditional Birth Attendants Dais (TBAs) are trained

who are responsible for dealing with primary health care issues and

safe deliveries respectively. Till the year 2009, Mahiti has so far trained

64 WHWs and 79 TBAs in 49 villages. Mahiti is also being expanding

this activity of training and capacity building of WHWs and TBAs in

other villages where community health program did not reached.

y HIV / AIDS Interventions

Mahiti took another initiative in 2009 and that is intervention

regarding awareness creation among single male industrial migrant

workers. Gujarat State AIDS Control Society, Ahmedabad had given a

targeted interventions program on HIV AIDS with single male

migrants coming from other states in Changodar industrial area,

Sarkhej Chokdi and Sanand Chokdi (Chokdi is a Gujarati colloquial

word for cross roads) areas as an implementing support agency. Withthis view Mahiti got involved in this work.

Youth Empowerment and Development

y So far 30 youth groups in 30 villages have been formed. Total number ofmembers is 1239. These youth groups have a place in their village where they

have books, indoor and outdoor games equipment for games like chess, carom

board, volleyball etc so as to encourage the youth to pass their free time in good

constructive activities and come closer so that an atmosphere of communication

created. The village youth use these centers. Some times they organize short

picnics with their contribution.

y Mahitis efforts to bring the marginalized people in this area to mainstream

remains incomplete unless the youth in the villages are not made aware and

capable.

Disaster Management

To create awareness among communities with preparedness plans to

cope up with disasters and to minimize the damages; Mahiti

undertakes Community Based Disaster Preparedness and Management

in disaster prone villages. In all the coastal villages disaster

preparedness and management committees are being formed

consisting of local men, women and teachers to assist people in adverse

circumstances.

for the successful attainment of objective.

y How to plan and implement the programmed meant for the needy andclosely monitor it to guarantee its success.

y We have learnt that we should not unnecessarily waste the resources

available to us but should donate it to the needy.

y For the development of society, our prime goal should not be to earn

money for ourselves but also do something for the underprivileged

sections of society.

Conclusiony Today, Mahiti is the largest development of women in the

Bhal region of Dholera, Dhandhuka and Bhavnagar. Mahiticonducting the various facilitates of training programmersand opportunity of alternative work to do and inspiring the

different community of village people for societydevelopment and benefits. Its also increase the standard ofliving people in Bhal region.

y By way of natural resource management mahiti solved theproblems of water crisis. Mahiti has constructed more than

900 Roof-top Rainwater Harvesting Structures (tanks)which have been able to provide safe potable drinkingwater to more than 7000 people in the villages.
