Preamble

We have forgotten relevance of Gandhism in the 21st Century as we lost

sight of ethical values in our pursuit of prosperity and power. Peace has

taken back seat, exploitation and conflict have come to forefront. Further,

the total ecosystem becomes greatly endangered not only in India but also

in the whole world. Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of our times has

rightly condoled the death of the Mahatma “Generations to come will

scarce to believe that such a one as this even in flesh and blood walked

upon this earth”. Mahatma Gandhi believed in “Service to Humanity is

Service to God”. Truth and nonviolence were his most powerful weapons to

fight against the British for our Independence. The Gandhian philosophy

revolved around the concept of concern for others, peace, co-existence

and respecting each other. Further, he says “I cannot starve my neighbour

and claim to serve my distant cousin in the North Pole. This is the basic

principle of all religions and we will find it is also true and human

economics”.

Gandhism is a living thought for solving the social, economic and political

problems of the day. Gandhism is becoming more and more relevant with

the passing of time due to the use of moral principles in each and every

field. In fact, the future generations will recall Gandhi’s idea particularly in

two broader specific areas: firstly, the use of non-violent methods and for

reflecting violence for the resolution of social and political conflicts; and

secondly, for trying to come to grips with the problems of the culture of

“consumerism” in the post industrial era. Not only that, his ideas will be

relevant in 21st Century because the combined theory with practice,

individual religious outlook with life-affirmation, morality with public activity,

non-cooperation with evil with adherence to non-violence, developing

methodology of action with effective force but without malice towards the

opponents and rational and experimental attitude together with the

fundamental acceptance of an ethical position.

With this background it is proposed to deliberate Gandhism in the age of

globalization under the following sub themes:

1. Gandhism and Crisis in 21st Century

2. Gandhism and Environmental Crisis

3. Philosophy of Sarvodaya and World Crisis

4. Satyagraha and World Crisis
