    LARRY BLANKO TO THE RESCUE

While having breakfast at The Market Place at the Cal, Thursday, October 11, 2007, Pinky, her brother Larry, and his anc , Evelyn, noticed a woman gagging. The woman s brother attempted to do CPR but was unsuccessful. No one stepped forward to assist. Patrons stood in line or looked on and continued dining. It was then Larry, head supervisor of security at Royal Capitol Plaza on Oahu, rushed and applied what he knew about CPR. After two Heimlich hugs and a tap on the back, a thick piece of steak that was lodged in the woman s throat was expelled. The distraught woman and her group were from Maui. In appreciation, the Maui entourage, picked up the tab for Larry and his group at a ne dining restaurant.

On August 5th, 2007, a group of Lanaians sailed on a 7 day cruise to the Inside Passage of Alaska. The Sun Princess Cruise ship sailed from Seattle and visited the ports of call of Ketchikan, Tracy Arm, Juneau, and Skagway. Final stop was Victoria, British Columbia. This is the rst time a large group of Lanaians has taken a cruise together.

The Lanaians that sailed were Helen Tabura, Judy RuidasShiroma, Eleanor ValdezRobles, Edith VergaraQuiray, Shirley Endo Lagua, and Gilbert Agaran. Spouses/friends from the outer islands joining the group were Henry Dulan, Leo Robles, Mario Quiray, Nemi Lagua, Juanita Agaran, and Arnold & Katie Mahelona.

Although everyone had not met in several years, some for the very rst time, the aloha connection and bond were immediately felt once on board the ship. Henry, Leo and Arnold who had never met before, brought their ukuleles and together blended harmoniously like they had played and sang with each other all their lives. Throughout the voyage, they not only entertained the group, but also the other passengers and crew who just adored the soothing Hawaiian music. They also participated in a talent show and were the biggest hit of the night. Eleanor also graced the stage with a beautiful hula number, accompanied by the trio.

Some of the highlights of the trip were, several outstanding entertainment on board ship with a starstudded cast of Vegas style productions, comedy and magic shows, wine tasting, spa treatments and slot tournament at the casino. Tours of Alaska included a

salmon hatchery, totem pole museum, an amazing four hours train tour of Skagway, scrumptious

salmon bake, magni cent glacier tour, and bald eagles in captivity. There were also several close sightings of bald eagles and bears in the wild. Of course, the unlimited meals available

24 hrs a day were unbelievable!

Travel arrangements were coordinated by Sally Tabura Cadiente,

Travel Planner, who did an excellent job making sure everyone had a fun, enjoyable,

and memorable experience. She even surprised the group with a few extra perks. On the rst night, a welcoming bottle of wine and canap s were delivered to each cabin. At the rst formal dinner, everyone received a personal cake preceded by a chorus of waiters singing either Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary . Balloons were also placed on each cabin door to celebrate the respective occasion. Professional photographs were taken each night, and everyone got one complimentary picture.

Cruising Alaska with family and friends was so fabulous that plans are in the works for another adventure in the near future.

    MILITARY LIFE

By Takeo YamatoThe Korean War started soon after my high school graduation. I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force to have a

chance to see the world. It was from serving in the military that I was able to see and experience so many di erent places. Each had its own unique history and culture. I was able to see rst hand places I had only dreamed about in my youth.

My rst assignment was at Hickam Air Force Base. From there I worked in Guam where I managed to survive the hot tropical climate, along with a high density of insects and other pests. From Guam my next assignment was the Air Force Terminal in Tokyo where outgoing ights were used to support the U.S. e ort in the Korean War. The Embassy Flights from Tokyo allowed me to see the Philippines, Saipan, the defeat of the French in Indo China and the nal days of Dien Bien Phu, Bangkok, Calcutta, New Delhi, Pakistan, and Saudia Arabia. In 1955, I had the opportunity to visit Hong Kong and toured the Tiger Balm Gardens, Victoria Peak and the oating restaurants of Aberdeen.

At the end of 1955, I reenlisted with the intent of seeing Europe. Instead I was assigned to Johnson Air Force Base, Japan, later to Kimpo Air Field in Korea, and to Travis Air Force Base in California. After that I was assigned to Washington, D.C. I enjoyed the city so full of history and civil war battle elds.

My opportunity to see Europe was realized when I was able to serve as a crew member on an aircraft used for a Secretary of Defense visit to confer with NATO North Atlantice Treaty Organization representatives. I traveled to Newfoundland, Bonn, Berlin, Weisbadn, Nuremberg, Germany, Vienna, Austria, and Paris. All of my travels have been etched forever in my memories. It was an unbelievable journey!

    By Helen Kaya Takenouchi

On September 1, 2007, our daughter, Carin Iha, and daughter in law, Dr.Lori Ideta, invited our family, relatives, and close friends to a luncheon at 3660 On The Rise restaurant to celebrate our golden anniversary. It was nice to see everyone, especially our wedding party members: matron, of honor Kiyomi Akahoshi Kunishsige, attendant Ethel Abe Uyehara, ower girl Christy Rabe

and best man Roy Tanonaka. We all enjoyed the good food, fellowship and the video of old pictures that Carin put together.

Frank and I were treated to a weekend at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel which we enjoyed! It was a gift from my sister, Matsuko Matsumoto, and nephew, Colbert Matsumoto and his family. We have been blessed with good friends and family. We cherish our old memories and look forward to having many more in the coming years.

    OUR GARDEN CLUB

By Helen Kaya TakenouchiOne way our class keeps in touch with each other is talking about the plants in our yards. I can t recall when our

Garden Club started. Initially, Richard Kawakami, Eddie Hokama, Jaime Dugay, Kiyomi Kunishige and I, exchanged ideas about planting and caring for vegetables. Then we decided to form this club. Elected president was Jaime Dugay.

    As club members:

•We share recipes that we think are healthy.•Eddie is excited and emailed pictures of his poha plants with owers.•The pineapple he planted and harvested tasted very sweet.•Richard is growing Okinawan purple potatoes.•Jaime planted vegetables and is trying to grow his poha plants.•Kiyomi s orange lilikoi plants are doing well.•Gardening keeps us healthy and busy.

Class of 1952 continuedTRIP TO HARRAH S CASINO by Eddie Hokama

It is always fun seeing each other. Amenities included the free two hours bus ride and the 5.00 gambling ticket. A week prior to our scheduled trip, David Funada got his signals crossed. He went to Harrah s and wondered where the rest of us were. He did join us as originally planned. Then there was Marcellino

Sam Sugitan who was late and missed the bus. We spotted him at the second bus stop. It wasn t his day for he was unable to get on the bus lled with passengers. The best thing about a trip like this is getting together!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SAM!

We celebrated Marcellino Sugitan s birthday today at our Marukai lunch. Per his request, we had a huge cheesecake! Each of us got two pieces! We had so much food again today, that everyone had a big doggie bag to take home! Picking the third Wednesday of the month was an excellent idea. We were the only ones there from eleven a.m. to twelve p.m.!

1953Our heartfelt mahalo nui loa to Richard Shimizu and Family for the generous monetary gift presented to the Class of 1953 in memory of his late wife, the former Lillian Shimizu. The monetary contribution has been deposited in the Class Memorial Fund. When a classmate passes away, a condolence donation is given to the bereaved family.

    1961ALASKAN CRUISE by Gerald Sakamura

Members of the Class of 61 and one from the Class of 63 went on an Alaskan Sun Princess Cruise in May 2007. It was a cold but enjoyable trip and a very good experience. Hopefully, for our 65th Birthday Year more classmates will be interested in signing up for a cruise. Class of 61 members included: Joyce Oda Kobayakawa, Carol Nobui Pajari, Merle Sorida Suwa, Patty Oshiro, Nancy Okamitsu Sakamura and Gerald Sakamura.
