What’s at PAS

MAH HADASHFall 2017/5778

As we begin the new year of 5778, Park Avenue Synagogue has a newly expanded campus, new program initiatives, a re-envisioned curriculum in our Congregational School, and a fresh take on familiar worship and events.

At PAS we welcome all adults and children, wherever they may be on their Jewish journey, to pray, learn, sing, play, and to connect with each other, our Torah, our God, the people and State of Israel, and our wider community.

TRANSFORMING THE WORD: CONTINUING THE TRADITION OF HEBREW MANUSCRIPT ILLUMINATION

THE ART OFBARBARA WOLFFSEP–JAN OPENING RECEPTIONTHU | OCT 19 | 6:00–7:30 PM

Barbara Wolff’s illuminated texts are created in the tradition of the great medieval Hebrew manuscripts. Those have survived to today like messengers from the distant past, speaking to us in the voices of artists and scribes and conveying the faith of the devoted owners who treasured and preserved them. While her illuminations are made with materials and techniques of the 14th century, they are conceived with a 21st-century sensibility and an awareness of the history, archeology, geography, and customs of the region in which these ancient words were set.

We have redefined the age groups for our baby and toddler classes, and we have added social programs not tied to Shabbat and holidays to help families integrate Judaism and their community into their daily lives. Even familiar programs like Tot Tefillah and Havdalah have been redesigned, with Tot Tefillah at a new time, and Havdalah spiced up to give each program its own unique flavor.

PJ LIBRARY AT PAS A new book every month! PJ Library is a program offered by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. Every month, a free, high-quality Jewish children's book or music is mailed to families, matched to the age of the child who will receive it. PAS is thrilled to offer this program to all families with children between the ages of six months and eight years. For more information, contact Jamie Diamond.

The Early Childhood Center is growing from strength to strength, building and expanding our community. We now offer differentiated learning opportunities that extend beyond the typical school day for children who participate in the Afterschool Enrichment Program. We have expanded our parent workshops to include time for coffee and conversation so that parents can get to know one another and share child-rearing questions and advice. In the spring we will have a Special Visitors Day so that children can share the ECC with grandparents or other special adults, and an Alumni Day so that children see that being part of the ECC family extends beyond their preschool years. As we look at the whole child and the arc of the school year, we aim to provide a supportive, engaging community not only for our children but also for their families.

For more information, contact Pamela Schwartz, Director.

MILESTONE MOMENTSAn innovation in the Congregational School program, Milestone Moments celebrate children’s achievements in Jewish learning, give them a feeling of belonging in the larger fabric of PAS, and help them and their families to see themselves in the arc of lifelong learning. Over the course of the year, there is a Milestone Moment for each grade. Dalet learners (Gr 4), for example, reach the milestone of beginning Hebrew tutoring and learning to read and decode prayers. They receive their own copy of Siddur Lev Shalem, the same prayer book that they see and use in our sanctuary services, which they will carry with them into adulthood.

Congregational School at PASAs a result of the work of our Congregational School Visioning Task Force, we have incorporated new components in our program this fall. We remain dedicated to positive and engaging Jewish education to inspire lifelong participation in the Jewish community for all learners and their families. Our educational philosophy, curriculum, and programs are rooted in four strategic areas of focus:

• Enhancing core curriculum scope and sequence • Strengthening Hebrew reading to enable learners to be active

participants in prayer services • Ensuring teacher excellence • Improving communications and clarifying expectations.

For more information, contact Jennifer Stern Granowitz, Director of the Congregational School.
