Over the years, one of the more obscure Jewish customs that I have come to appreciate is the counting of the omer. The omer refers to the forty-nine day period between the second night of Passover and the holiday of Shavuot. This period marks the beginning of the barley harvest when, in ancient times, Jews would bring the first sheaves to the Temple as a means of thanking God for the harvest. The word omer literally means "sheaf" and refers to those early offerings. The Torah itself dictates the counting of the seven weeks following Pesach: "You shall count from the eve of the second day of Pesach, when an omer of grain is to be brought as an offering, seven complete weeks. The day after the seventh week of your counting will make fifty days, and you shall present a new meal offering to God (Leviticus 23:15– 16)." There is a further command that from the day when the omer was brought, seven weeks were to be counted and on the 50th day a festival was to be celebrated (Leviticus 23: 15–21). This festival was later called Shavuot, “the Feast of Weeks” (because it falls on the day after the seven weeks have been counted). Beyond the agricultural connection between the two holidays, the rabbis would later connect the redemption celebrated on Pesah to the revelation celebrated on Shavuot with the giving/receiving of the Torah, the association being one that underscored the idea that only a truly free people could choose to embrace the study of Torah. The Psalmist teaches us to limnot yameinu—to count our days and give thanks for having a heart of wisdom. During the next seven weeks, I will be reaching out to all of you. I will be calling each family in CDH to connect more directly with you, to check in on a personal level (should you desire to do so), to talk with you about your relationship to our community, and encourage your participation in our communal life. I will call home or work, and should I find you, and you have a few minutes to speak, I will be delighted to talk with you, and if not, I will leave you a message. If there is something you would like to speak with me about, then call or email to make a time. If not, you are not obligated to return my call. This is my way of saying everyone counts in the context of counting every day towards a greater goal. Many, many, many THANKS to Betsy Chessler and Steven Florman for organizing our Matzah Bake last month!  It was a fun morning in the courtyard, and the matzah came out great!  Especially the chocolate-covered ones!  The inventory sold out quickly.  Hopefully next year, more Dor Hadash members will come to bake and enjoy such a fun and delicious morning.

To Whom Do I Owe What? The question of Israel and the Universalism

in Jewish Thinking

Our speaker on Friday night, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. is Martin Bunzl, who teaches philosophy at Rutgers University. Martin’s work “lies at the intersection of philosophy and public policy.” He has written on topics that

include slave redemption and climate engineering. He has had long-standing involvement with Israel and was a senior fellow at the van Leer Institute in Jerusalem from 201–2003 where he organized a study of unilateral withdrawal  from the West Bank.

He lives with his wife, Deborah Hertz in La Jolla.

He is an engaging and provocative speaker! Please plan on attending.

I am writing this column after returning home from our first Matzah Bake.  It's another one of CDH’s creative programs that links us to our history, heritage and religion through a hands-on experience. We have several great programs. The challenges for our small congregation are to space the programs on our calendar in a timely manner, have sufficient volunteers to help plan and conduct the programs, and to communicate with our community. That is why our Board created a Committee on Committees and a Council of Chairs.

The Committee on Committees was a time limited group that conducted a "gap analysis" of our committees, made recommendations for reorganizing our committee structure and assured that such key endeavors such as Adult Education now have a home and full attention from a committee and chair. One great concept that came out of this process is looking at the Gesher program as a continuum of educational program from preschool through our school program into high school.  Both formal education as well as informal education (as seen in the Shabbat B'Yachad and our madrihim programs) will be under the aegis of the Gesher School Education Committee.

And I recently convened a new Council of Chairs.  Through this Council, the committees will be linked more directly, work more closely across committees in assembling an annual calendar, in planning events, in advising our budgeting process, and in better informing our congregation of what we hope to achieve.  Already some great new ideas are being developed.

Speaking of ideas, the Site Selection Committee is completing its work and at this point is focusing on shared facilities. A report and recommendations will be made to the Board in April. I anticipate that we will have congregation-wide meetings to allow for understanding any adopted recommendations in May. (Dates will be available in the weekly shmeer and the next HaKesher.)

We have much to build on in our congregation.  And fortunately, we have a congregation that traditionally has shared in our volunteer endeavors.  Of course this volunteerism enables us to advance our core values of tikkun olam (building a better world) and undertaking mitzvot. With your help and support, we will be able to create even more memorable Jewish moments for ourselves and our congregational family.

— Gary Rotto

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Gesher School's Gan/Alef class will be sponsoring a mitzvah project in April, a pajama drive for children in need. The Pajama Program is a New-York based not-for-profit organization that provides new pajamas and books to children in need, and Dor Hadash will hold our own drive for the local San Diego chapter of the Pajama Program, and earmark our donation to the children at the Polinsky Children's Center. The Polinsky Children's Center is a 24-hour facility for the temporary emergency shelter of children who must be separated from their families for their own safety, or when parents can not provide care. Each month more than 300 children ages newborn to 18 years old are admitted to the Polinsky Children's Center.

We are asking for donations of new pajamas in all sizes, infants to teens.

May 5, 2013—Join the One Book One Congregation at 1:00 p.m. to learn about and discuss Israeli journalist Matti Friedman's The Aleppo Codex. Described as a "Holy Who Dunnit," the Boston Globe says Friedman's book is a "thrilling, step-by-step quest to discover what really happened to Judaism’s most important book." This is the copy that Maimonedes read from!

From a NY Times article: "A thousand years ago, the most perfect copy of the Hebrew Bible was written. It was kept safe through one upheaval after another in the Middle East, and by the 1940s it was housed in a dark grotto in Aleppo, Syria, and had become known around the world as the Aleppo Codex.  Journalist Matti Friedman’s true-life detective story traces how this precious manuscript was smuggled from its hiding place in Syria into the newly founded state of Israel and how and why many of its most sacred and valuable pages went missing. It’s a tale that involves grizzled secret agents, pious clergymen, shrewd antiquities collectors, and highly placed national figures who, as it turns out, would do anything to get their hands on an ancient, decaying book. What it reveals are uncomfortable truths about greed, state cover-ups, and the fascinating role of historical treasures in creating a national identity."

Copies are available in San Diego libraries, independent book sellers, and of course at Amazon. Be sure to shop through our website at http://www.dorhadash.org/support-dor-hadash.html.)
