MTM Basics

MTM is based on Villari Effect (magneto-elasticity, of inverse magnetostriction).

When subject to mechanical deformation(or stress), metal changes its magnetization.

The basis of MTM integrity concept is the fact that it is not defects themselves

that are dangerous for metal and constructions, but local combination of defects

and high stress is. MTM is capable of remote detection of stress concentration

spots within the pipe metal by analyzing its magnetic field.

It detects areas subject to stress concentrators (defects and locally applies forces)

and determines the level of risk of these areas.

MTM Advantages

.

NO BLINDSPOTS: entire pipeline length.

NO INTERRUPTIONS: Inspectionunder pipelineoperatingcondition

NO SPECIAL PIPELINE PREPARATION

SPEED OF SCANNING: up to 5 km/hour.

APPLICABLE: all types of magnetized metal pipelines.

DETECTS : all types of anomalies inside and outside of the pipe.

INTEGRITY EVALUATION: evaluate the pipeline for all types of

defects and stress concentrations under actual operating conditions.

INDICATES STRESS CONCENTRATION: "insignificantly small"

defect that cannot be detected by other non-destructive testing methods

which may in turn be high-risk anomalies.

PRECISION OF MTM EVALUATIONS: 90% to 97% correspondence

with conventional methods of CHl/ln, DNV, ASME, API FEM, Etc.

NOT NECESSARY: contacts with pipeline surface.

NO CLEANING OR PREPARATION: internal and external

EFFICIENTFOR MICRO CRACK IN WELDS: at high-load areas in

new pipelines.

MTM Reliability

Probability of detection of defective areas: 90%

Probability of correct interpretation of danger degree: 77.5%

Probability of missing a critical defect: 2.25%

Probability of false calls POFC: 0% to 17%*

* the largest value is for the pipeline which is laid in environment including

large amount of metal debris.

MTM Procedure

1. Determining the pipeline location underground.

2. Scan the pipeline using a portable magnetometer that automatically

records magnetic data and GPS coordinates.

3. Select the 1 or 2 locations for excavation showing anomality in the survey.

4. Additional non-destructive testing is performed by excavation after Step

3 if required.

5. Submit the final report, that includes:

• The locations and risk levels (anomalous) of the pipeline

• Parameters for analyzing safety of all detected defect areas

Safe operation term (Tsafe)

Safe operation pressure (Psafe)

Estimated repair factor (ERF)

Local internal stress values (Si)

AQUA MTM

Technology developed by RDC Transkor-K in Russia in frame of a joint development

agreement with PETRONAS in Malaysia.

AQUA MTM can be used to inspect subsea pipelines along their entire span at

depths up to 200 m with POD > 80%.

AQUA MTM is designed for remote evaluationof

stress-deformed state ofsubsea pipelines of any

purpose intended to be usedwith an underwater

remotely operated vehicles(ROV).

Retaining all advantages of the onshore

MTM, the Aqua MTM is capable of remote

inspection, without interruption of operation,

safely, not incurring risks to personnel, or

damage to property or to the environment, in

order to detect integrity parameters of

submarine pipelines by detecting metal

defects (metal loss due to internal or external

corrosion, change of geometry, etc.), and

stress concentration areas (free spans, loss of

stability, etc).
