Only dam water used for irrigation Please be informed, we do not make use of municipality water for irrigation purposes. We are currently irrigating from Sam’s Dam. Both Sam’s Dam and Dam 1 is full. We are monitoring the dam levels on a daily basis.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
6Sam’s Dam Dam 1
We are only using the available water to irrigate newly-planted vegetation such as: • The Water Pear trees (Syzgium guineense) on both sides of Vaillant Boulevard (from Sluysken to Voorbrug
Avenue);• The shrubs in the Schonenberg Retirement Village next to the Pick n Pay boundary wall;• The Schonenberg Nursery. Please note, we do not expect residents to water plants on Common Property, but if you feel the need to “help” young plants in your immediate vicinity, you are welcome to do so.

Water FeaturesFaced with the current water crisis, be advised that all water
features on the Estate have been emptied until further notice.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY (Cont . . .)
Water CrisisTheewaterskloof Dam, the largest of five major dams supplying
water to the city, currently at 36.8 percent.
Thank you for your co-operation in using less water over the Dec-Jan period than over the Nov-Dec period. The average daily reduction in water consumption per household = 21%
Average = 19,3 kl [37 days] = 0,52 kl/household/day
Compare average with 10 Nov – 5 Dec = 16,4 kl [25 days] = 0,66 kl/household/day
The following statistics are still a big concern:• 1 household used more than 110 kl during this period
• 8 households used between 50 - 70 kl
• 23 households used between 40 - 49 kl
• 43 households used between 30 - 39 kl
• 435 households used between 0 - 29 kl
• City of Cape Town dam levels are critically low at 39.2 percent.• Capetonians are using 90 million litres more than the city’s daily target of 800 million litres per day.• Level 3 restrictions were implemented in November 2016, but residents still use too much water.• The City of Cape Town has approved Level 3B Water Restrictions, effective from 01-02-2017 until
further notice.• Dam levels will reach a critical stage within the next few months and could drop to an estimated 20
percent.• If residents do not curb their water consumption, it could spell disaster!
Let us make every effort to save water. Schonenberg residents can report contraventions directly to [email protected] or phone 0860 103 089.

In order to save water, the irrigation system is not being used. Consequently, the gardens are looking very dry, plants are turning brown and some trees are loosing leaves. Towards the end of March, beginning of April, after the first rains, we will do an assessment in order to determine how many plants have died, in which areas and which species have survived. This assessment will provide the basis for planning the landscaping upgrades 2017.
We plan to continue with the waterwise concept introduced with landscaping upgrades 2015 and 2016 by using succulent and indigenous plants combined with klip and gabion stones and reducing lawn areas.

In the nursery, plants are being propagated ready for May, June, July when they can be planted in the landscaped gardens and in the Seep. Currently, cuttings are being made of succulents: aloes, vygie, crassula and cotelydons.
Cutting of bulrushes in the dams is scheduled for the end of January to be carried out by a special team. The lower team and the upper team of gardeners continue to do general maintenance of the gardens.
ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS (Cont . . .)
Watch out for the Egyptian Goose! Please watch out for an Egyptian goose with her newly born goslings at the south-west boundary of the Estate, near the railway line. She is very aggressive as she wishes to protect them. Please refrain from jogging, with or without dogs, in this specific area as she loves to scare passers-by.
