Meeting Memos -Thursday, April 21st:
This was a great day for attending meetings at the Madison Rotary! We had some special guests at this morning's meet-ing, Including our long term exchange student Sarah Bitner, and Barry Kroll's wife, Judy.
At the morning session Lois Bhatt introduced Beth P. Riley of the Potted Garden, who came to speak to us about "Waking Up Our Gardens For Spring!" Beth does custom designs for gardens and homes. She explained that this is now a good time to plant, and do some prunning. She went on to explain the best ways to prune, the correct way to
treat mulch, and how we should be cleaning up and inspecting our gardens now, in preparation of spring.
For more information on prunning and taking care of your garden, visit the Madison Public Library for books
from the American Horticultural Society, or you can contact Beth at: [email protected] or visit her
website at: thepottedgarden.biz.
The 50/50 was won by Cathy Coultas at the morning Meeting. Ralph Engelsman won the 50/50 at Lunch.
Two of our other members made announcements that, while not Rotary functions deserve mention. Pat Miller
spoke about the Postal Workers Food Drive. As you may know the Postal workers collect food for the hun-gry at this time. Campbell’s Soup has agreed to contribute a huge amount of food to the effort m through a special corporate program. Contact Pat for the website and more information. Rose Pancirov put forth a special invitation to
Madison Rotarians to attend the opening night of “ I Hate Hamlet” at the Morris Museum Bickford Theater, and a chance to meet and mingle with the cast. Con-
tact Rose for prices and more information on these event.
A word about May Day. The Rotary Club of Madison has taken on the responsibility of maintaining the gardens around the Madison Public Library. Twice a year members weed, prune, trim the plantings that grace the library,
and generally clean up the grounds. But May Day is our big push when we try to get as many members out as we can, as we do all of the above, and add mulch
as well.
This is not only a great opportunity to participate in a club activity, give something back to the town, but it’s also a great opportunity to do something
with your kids (or nieces, nephews, grandchildren, or other whoever). The chil-dren all seem to enjoy it, and the extra help is always welcome.
So this May Day is Saturday, May 7th, and our leader in this effort, Tom Haralampoudis asks that we get there between 8 and 9 A.M.,
and don’t forget, you get a free T-Shirt as well, as a make-up.
Meeting Memos: Thursday, April 21st (continued): In the afternoon our Madison High School Interact Club joined us and gave a
presentation and slide Show on their most recent efforts.
This is the 5th year for the MHS Interact Club. In that short time the Club has won numerous awards, including the MHS Service Club of the Year two years in a row. We’ve seen them raising their purple fingers up in support of Polio Plus at various events such as Bottle Hill Day.
Jack Conley, the current Club President, led the presentation, and spoke about what’s coming up with Interact. Continuing with their support of Polio Plus, the Interact Club is also expanding their efforts to raising funds for a program which buys nets to help prevent malaria in Uganda. As a kudos to their efforts, the Interact Club recently received a letter from Raymond G. Chambers, the Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Malaria, congratulating them for their work.
This year the Club has raised over $2,000.00 for the mosquito nets; and $1,700.00 for Polio Plus. They do this through a variety of different things; as we said before manning a table at Bottle Hill Day, checking coats at the Taste of Madison, Video Game Nights at the YMCA, monthly bake sales at the high school, and the upcoming Car Wash on May 22nd. The Interact will be holding a rummage sale, and are looking for donations. Talk to Bob Conley about where and when to drop them off.
The Club goals include more of an effort to increase membership (the Club currently has be-tween 10 and 20 members), and to plan for fund raising for three projects each year, one local or community project, one national, and one international. I am sure that these resourceful kids will succeed in their efforts, and am just as sure that they can count on the support of every Madison Rotarian. If you are interested in being a mentor and liaison between the Rotary and Interact, please contact Bob Conley of our Club for more information.
Madison Rotary Club Vice President Carmela Moeller opened the meeting.

Rotary Club of Madison Japan Relief Effort
The Rotary Club of Madison will be conducting a fund-raiser for its Japanese Recovery & Restoration Project. The Event: "Restoring Hope" will occur on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the Morris Museum, 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown, N.J.
This event is part of a Rotary District-wide effort in collaboration with its Japanese sister club in Shikoku Japan, District 2670, who will identify
restoration projects with the most need. The accumulated funds will then qualify for a matching grant from Rotary International.
This will be a major event, with a number of prominent Japanese artists and dignataries expected, and we will need all hands on board to make this evening a
success. So please, set the date aside and plan on attending and helping out.
Restoration Hope is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $50.00/person.

Rotary Foundation Thoughts of the Week
(from the Rotary International website)
Matching Grants: Even a small club can make a big difference when participating in a Matching Grant. While Rotarians from the Rotary
Club of Marana in District 5500 were traveling in Zimbabwe, they found a man who was obviously hungry.
These Rotarians worked with the Rotary Club of Victoria Falls and the Rotary Foundation to create a food garden that feeds an entire village
and is self-sustaining for future generations.
Rotarian Randy Brooks says: It truly is amazing how our small club contributions translate into opportunity for those in need of help. It is
hard not to be overly proud of Rotary, its members, and the Rotary Foundation,
THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLY (From the ABCs of Rotary)
In view of the annual turnover of Rotary leadership each year, special effort is required to provide the 25,600 club leaders with appropriate instruction
for the tasks they will assume.
The annual district assembly is the major leadership-training event in each of the 500 Rotary districts of the world. The district assembly offers motivation, inspiration, Rotary information and new ideas for club officers, directors and key committee chairmen of
each club.
Some of the most experienced district leaders conduct informative discussions on all phases of Rotary administration and service projects. The assembly gives all
participants valuable new ideas to make their club more effective and interesting. Usually eight to ten delegates from each club are invited to attend the training session.
Another important feature of a district assembly is a review by the incoming district governor of the program theme and emphasis of the new R.l. president for the coming year. District goals and objects are also described and plans are developed for their
implementation.
The success of each Rotary club is frequently determined by the club's full representation and participation in the annual district
assembly.
