Thanksgiving
and GratitudeAccording to Robert Emmons,
from UC Davis, giving thanksmay be one of the mostsignificant things in your life. Here is what he says aboutgratitude: It has power ... itheals, energizes, and transformslives. Emmons is a researchpsychologist and has spent 12years testing the efficacy of
gratitude and he has foundastounding results.
He goes on to explain thatthere are two basic tenets of ourgratitude. First, it gives us a senseof the goodness of life, thatthere are good things, benefits, and gifts. This does not meanthat life is perfect, but that it isbasically good. The second tenetis found in the question, Wheredoes this goodness come from? With this question, we recognizethat the source of goodnesscomes from outside ourselves. For people of faith, this willlogically lead to God and forothers, their Higher Power.
The contentment that comfrom this gratitude helps us to
not succumb to some of ourgreatest vices. If I am grateful what I have, I will not wantwhat someone else has. I willcelebrate the successes of othas something to be grateful foin itself, which will keep mefrom envy. There is also thatfeeling and intention of seeinthe good rather than alwaysseeing the problems with
the world.Further, Emmons has showthrough his research thatgratitude can be learned. In hbookGratitude Works,he giva step by step approach tofostering gratitude. Throughconsistent recording of eventsgratitude, one can actually foa habit of practicingthankfulness in life. This prac
can incrementally change onelife, so that they will havegreater bonds with communiless stress and stress-relatedillness, more satisfyingrelationships with others, andcan live happy lives.
You may be thinking abouthese verses from the Bible,There is great gain in Godlycontentment, or It is good t
give thanks or Give thanks the Lord for He is good. Peoof faith have always knownabout the importance ofgratitude, and now, thanks tothis research, we can see evendeeper into the effects ofgratitude.
Happy Thanksgiving!Chaplain Brad

In 1948, Viola moved to SanDiego, California with her
parents and younger sister. Shewent to work at Rohr Aircraft. Inhe same year, she met her
husband, Russel, at church, while he was stationed in SanDiego with the Navy. He wasent to Adak, Alaska and they
wrote letters daily. He returned ayear later and married Viola, onAugust 10, 1949. They had three
hildren, Cyndee, born in 1951,
Debi, in 1954, and Russel Jr., in955. They have eight beautifulgrandchildren and sixteendarling great-grandchildren.
The family moved to ElCentero, CA, in 1956, and theno Riverside seven years later.
Russel and Viola ownedestaurants in both cities andhey enjoyed working together
every day. In addition, they were
also involved with real estateand managing property for theState of Arizona for over30 years.
Russel and Viola moved toPhoenix in 1978. They traveledhe United States in their motor
home, along with their sweetittle poodle, Bunnyjo. Theyamped with friends and Russel
was always designated as a cook.
He was a great cook and enjoyedeeding many people. They
attended the Phoenix Assemblyof God Church since theyarrived in Arizona.
Viola comes from a largeamily, and since 1980 a familyeunion has been held each year.
Last year, her oldest brotherplanned the reunion in Omaha,
Nebraska to coincide with his97th birthday. He passed awaybefore the reunion, but he stillwanted it to continue at thisexpense. There were over 250family members who attended, and a great time was had by all.
Russel passed away onAugust 16, 2012, which was sixdays after their 63rd anniversary.Vi was very lonely living alone
in the home where they hadlived together for over 30 years. For this reason, she and her twodaughters began visiting seniorretirement communities andfound Fellowship Square. Shefell in love with the communityimmediately and moved intoher apartment on December 1,2012. She is so grateful that shefound such a great place to live,
