Liberal Arts Transfer Mathematics Courses Offered at Madison Area Technical College
10-834-110 Elementary Algebra with Applications
Topics include linear equations, graphing, exponents, polynomials, rational expressions, roots, and radical expressions. This is a “thin layer” class that doesn’t transfer to any four-year school. It is a skill-building class for Intermediate Algebra (20-804-201). Prerequisite: Basic Algebra (74-854-793), or COMPASS Pre-Algebra 43-99, or COMPASS Algebra 1-39. 10-804-134 Mathematical Reasoning
Provides an alternative pathway to earning credit for a college level liberal arts mathematics course. All college students, regardless of their college major, need to be able to make reasonable decisions about fiscal, environmental, and health issues that require quantitative reasoning skills. An activity-based approach is used to explore numerical relationships, graphs, proportional relationships, algebraic reasoning, and problem solving using linear, exponential and other mathematical models. Students will develop conceptual and procedural tools that support the use of key mathematical concepts in a variety of contexts. It is the first in a two-part sequence that ends with Quantitative Reasoning (20-804-211) as the capstone general education math requirement. Prerequisite: Basic Algebra (74-854-793), or COMPASS Pre-Algebra 43-99, or COMPASS Algebra 1-65. 20-804-200 Principles of Geometry
Topics include angles, segments, triangles, parallel lines, polygons, perimeter, area, similarity, circles, and solid shapes. This is an introductory college level course that provides a foundation in geometry necessary for the study of analytic geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. It also satisfies the high school geometry requirement for most four year schools. Prerequisite: Elementary Algebra w/ Apps (10-834-110), or COMPASS Algebra 40-50.
20-804-201 Intermediate Algebra
Topics include linear equations and inequalities, systems of linear equations and inequalities, polynomial functions and factoring, rational functions, radical functions, quadratic equations, and the exponential and logarithmic functions. This class transfers to most four-year schools as a math elective. Prerequisite: Elementary Algebra w/ Apps (10-834-110), or COMPASS Algebra 51-65. 20-804-202 Intermediate Algebra 1
This is the first half of Intermediate Algebra stretched over a semester. This class is recommended for students who got a “BC” or lower in Elementary Algebra. Prerequisite: Elementary Algebra w/ Apps (10-834-110), or COMPASS Algebra 40-50. 20-804-203 Intermediate Algebra 2
This is the second half of Intermediate Algebra stretched over a semester. When taken after 20-804-202, this class transfers to most four-year schools as a math elective. Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra 1 (20-804-202). 20-804-210 Math for Elementary Teachers
Topics include an introduction to problem solving and mathematical thinking, with an emphasis on the process of mathematics rather than specific techniques or content. Prerequisites: Intermediate Algebra, 20-804-201 or 20-804-203 or appropriate score on the placement test. This class transfers to most four year schools as a “Math for Teaching” course. Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra (20-804-201), or Intermediate Algebra 2 (20-804-203), or COMPASS Algebra 66-99, or College Algebra 1-45.
20-804-211 Quantitative Reasoning
Topics include construction & interpretation of graphs, descriptive statistics, geometry & spatial visualizations, math of finance, functions & modeling, probability, and logic. This course satisfies Part A of the Quantitative Reasoning requirement of the University of Wisconsin system and is intended for students who do not plan to take any further mathematics. Prerequisite: Quantitative Literacy (20-804-199) or Intermediate Algebra (20-804-201), or Intermediate Algebra 2 (20-804-203), or COMPASS Algebra 66-99, or COMPASS College Algebra 1-45. 20-804-212 College Algebra
Topics include those in Intermediate Algebra but in more depth, with an emphasis on the function concept, including exponential and logarithmic functions, the theory of polynomial equations, and the use of matrices to solve systems of linear equations. This class transfers to four year schools as College Algebra. Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra (20-804-201), or Intermediate Algebra 2 (20-804-203), or COMPASS Algebra 66-99, or COMPASS College Algebra 1-45. 20-804-229 Mathematical Analysis
Topics include all those covered in College Algebra and Trigonometry; this class consists of those two classes compressed into one semester. This class transfers to four year schools as Precalculus or Algebra & Trigonometry. Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra (20-804-201) or Intermediate Algebra 2 (20-804-203) with a grade of “AB” or higher, or COMPASS College Algebra 46-80. 20-804-240 Basic Statistics
Topics include descriptive statistics, basic probability theory, sampling distributions and the Central Limit Theorem, various statistical distributions, 1- and 2-sample tests, linear regression, the analysis of variance, and selected nonparametric procedures. This class transfers to most four year schools as “Introductory Statistics.” Prerequisite: Intermediate Algebra (20-804-201), or Intermediate Algebra 2 (20-804-203), or COMPASS Algebra 66-99, or COMPASS College Algebra 1-45.
