TREKKING / LEVADA WALKSComing to Madeira and not going for a walk alongside a “levada” or on a mountain trail, is missing one of the most exciting experiences that a hiker can have! Cultural and environmental factors have made walking along levadas one of Madeira’s most traditional and popular outdoor activities. Usually open and on the ground, some levadas are “torn” into the rocks in abysses which are hundreds of feet deep, while others cross mountains from north to south, through tunnels that are hundreds of meters long. There are more than 200 “levadas” surrounding the valleys and mountains, with a total of 3,000 km in the protected areas, including the Madeira Natural Park and the Funchal Ecological Park.

TRAIL RUNNINGFor athletes who love nature it is almost obligatory to go Trail Running in Madeira, on paths and mountain trails of varied, irregular or slippery surfaces.

EIRA DO SERRADO / NUN ́S VALLEYOne of the most popular tours in Madeira, visit the ‘heart’ of the island and enjoy the amazing views!This tour will take you to beautiful viewpoints and amazing views inside the island. The first stop on the tour is at Pico dos Barcelos, where you can admire a wonderful panoramic view over Funchal Bay and the city area, then we will take the old narrow road through the eucalyptus forest until Eira do Serrado. On this viewpoint (1094m.) you will have spectacular views overlooking the valley of Curral das Freiras surrounded by green, overwhelming mountains, from here you can also admire the tiny fields which grow fruit and vegetables, also sweet chestnut trees. We then head down in to the Village of Nuns Valley, a little village in the hearth of the island where you can taste the local chestnut liqueurs and cakes. The village was founded in the 16th century by the nuns of the convent of “Santa Clara” in Funchal, from where the nuns fled from pirate attacks in 1566

MONTE / BOTANICAL GARDENWe will start with a visit to the Botanical Garden, one of the most beautiful gardens in the region, with marvellous views overlooking the city of Funchal. Discover this fascinating world of plants, trees and flowers, where you can admire about 3.000 species, some endemic and some imported from all over the world. Our journey continues to Monte - village in the suburbs of Funchal, visit the Parish church, the beautiful gardens, and if you are brave take an exciting ride down to Funchal (until Livramento) on the famous wicker basket - toboggan -, a traditional transport originated in the early 19th century (this is optional and not included in price).

Next, we go in direction to Ponta de São Lourenço, enjoy the breath-taking scenery and wild landscape with amazing rock formations of the most eastern point of the island. Before return to Funchal, we will pass through Machico, the first place where Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira landed when Madeira was discovered.

EASTERN ISLAND TOUR:PICO AREEIRO/SANTANAExplore the eastern side of Madeira, breath taking views, enchanting laurissilva forest and traditional villages!The journey starts at Funchal, then we make our way to Camacha, famous for its beautiful wicker works, and stop to have a look around, visit the factory where you can see artisans working and purchase articles from a wide collection available. Next, we will take a scenic drive through Laurissilva forest up to Poiso and Pico do Areeiro - It is the third highest peak in Madeira, 1818m above the sea level. As we climb the mountain there are spectacular views, if the weather permits you will see cotton wool clouds hang in the valleys. The tour will continue along the enchanted Laurissilva forest until Ribeiro Frio, Natural Park where you can have a look around the trout hatchery. On the way to Santana, admire the greens of the terraced fields and the local farmers. In Santana, beautiful village on the north of the Island, you can visit the famous small thatched triangular houses. Driving down to the north coast we will stop at Portela - viewpoint at 670m from where you can see

WESTERN ISLAND TOUR: PORTO MONIZPrepare to be amazed by the natural beauty of the west coast of Madeira on this full day tour!On this tour, we will visit the typical fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, very well known for the fishing of black scabbardfish and for the typical drink Poncha. It is a picturesque location with colourful fishing boats, these charming views inspired Winston Churchill to paint his celebrated pictures of the region. On the way to the small town of Ribeira Brava, we will stop at Cabo Girão, one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe at 580m. Be brave and walk along the glass floor skywalk extending out over the top of the cliff and admire the amazing views. The journey will continue to Encumeada - this viewpoint offers a superb view from both sides of the island (north and south) can be seen at the same time (if the weather permits). On the way to Porto Moniz we will take the road along Paul da Serra - the largest and most extensive plateau of the island at 1400m above the sea – enjoy the green landscape of mountains and valleys. Next stop at Porto Moniz – located in the north of the island, town well- known for its natural swimming pools formed from volcanic rocks. On the way, discover one of the most beautiful points of the north coast: a road built on the rocks by the sea where we can admire the astonishing waterfalls. Return to Funchal passing by Seixal and São Vicente.

SOUTHWEST ISLAND TOUR:CALHETA / PONTA DE PARGODiscover the sunniest side of Madeira Island! Charming villages by the sea and enchanting landscapes!This tour will take you to the sunniest side of the Island, the southwest coast of Madeira. After picking you up, the first stop will be at Ponta de Sol, a charming village by the seaside. Ponta do Sol owes its name to the presence of an edge of rock that goes into the sea, and which reflects the sun’s rays. We will continue the journey until the viewpoint Moledos, enjoy the amazing views over Madalena do Mar. We continue the tour to Calheta, a town with beautiful scenery and one of the few sand beaches in Madeira, here you can also find one of the sugar cane mills of the island. Next stop is at the charming village Prazeres, a small town surrounded by lush mountains and green valleys. The journey continues to Ponta do Pargo, beautiful town located in the very west end of the island and known for its lighthouse on the edge of the cliffs, 312mts (984 ft) above the sea. Afterwards, visit Paúl do Mar and Jardim do Mar – two neighbouring quaint fishing villages well known for excellent surfing conditions and the most incredible sunsets. Madalena do Mar traditional fishing village, with a beautiful promenade along the pebbled beach. Return to Funchal.

GRAND ISLAND TOUR:PORTO MONIZ & SANTANAStart with a drive to Câmara de Lobos and them to Pico da Torre and ogle the charming fishing town Câmara de Lobos. Continue from here to Cabo Girão and admire a view of the seaside cliff standing 580 meters high, one of the tallest in Europe. Next, visit Encumeada summit where both north and south sides of the island can be viewed from 1,007 meters high (depending on weather conditions). Then, rise 1,400 meters to the island’s single plateau, Paul da Serra. Continue to the small north coast town of Porto Moniz popular for its magical swimming pools sculpted out of volcanic rock. From here, traverse by seaside roads surrounded by rocky terrain to ogle impressive waterfalls. Afterward, head to historical Sao Vicente , enjoy charming streets and monuments in town before stopping for lunch. Next, follow your guide to the sweeping view at Cabanas Sao Jorge. Save some selfies for the following alluring area of Santana with its famous cottages. Finally, explore the town of Machico where voyageurs famously left to discover new lands by sea in the 1420s. Return to Funchal.

Visit to the Embroidery Factory. Walk along the oldest street of Madeira “Rua de Santa Maria” to discover the old town of Funchal, narrow, cobbled lanes, old buildings with doors painted for talented artists, renovated fishermen’s cottages, restaurants, and art and craft shops. Then take the cable car to Monte, admire the wonderful aerial views to the city, visit the Parish church (dates from the 15th century), the beautiful gardens, and if you are brave take an exciting ride down to Funchal (until Livramento) on the famous wicker basket - toboggan -, a traditional transport originated in the early 19th century. Return to Funchal the visit will take you through emblematic buildings as the city hall, Jesuits ́s college of Funchal, the cathedral, Legislative Assembly and Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre.

WORKSHOP MADEIRA EMBROIDERYDuring this workshop there will be a professional guiding the client through the entire process: patern design explanation during which the client will be given an embroidery kit containing a cloth/handkerchief already prepared, needle and thread and a copy of the concluded item; perforation of the design outline; design transfer when the client learns how to transfer the design to the cloth; embroidery the client will be taught several stitches by the very same women that makes the embroidery at the factory; washing/ironing/cutting explanation of these steps.

Since 1992 Desertas became part of the European Biogenetic Reserves, mainly because of all the marine birds that breed there and the population of monk seals that uses this island for resting and breeding area.
