Late News …….
The Macmillan Unit is awarded Practice Development Unit Status.
We are delighted to announce that Bournemouth University have awarded the Macmillan Unit, “Practice De-
velopment Unit Status”. This is the culmination of two years work by the team at Christchurch, led by Sister
Heather Rogers, Senior Clinical Leader. The award recognises innovative improvements in Patient Care, and
classes the Macmillan Unit as a Centre of Excellence.
Macmillan
Something to be proud of
We are very proud that the
Macmillan Cancer Trust only
spends 6% of its income on
administration costs. There
are few Charities that can
make this claim.
This is great news, as it
means that more of your
money is spent on the vital
care that is provided at the
Macmillan Unit, and in the
local Community.
V o l u n t e e r s
At the Macmillan Unit we are
very lucky to have 100 Volun-
teers, who give up their valu-
able time to help our Patients.
They help out in many ways
including helping the Staff on
the wards, bringing Patients in
to our Day Centre, giving Art
Classes, providing aromather-
apy, and companionship.
The Macmillan Unit would not
be able to operate without our
band of Volunteers, and they
are often referred to as „worth
their weight in gold‟.
If you would like to Volunteer,
please contact Annie Church
on 01202 705243.
Macmillan Coach
Our Coach has been very
busy taking Guests from Al-
bany Lodge & Patients from
our Day Centre, on day trips to
the New Forest and shopping
excursions to Bournemouth.
This service is only possible
thanks to the generosity of the
local Community.
35th Anniversary Celebrated with re-Branding The Macmillan Cancer Trust was registered
as a Charity in 1974. The Trust was set up to
support the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch
Hospital, and fund the care of cancer patients
in the Christchurch, Bournemouth & Poole
areas. 35 years on, and the list of projects
funded by the Trust, to improve the care of
Patients suffering from cancer and other life
threatening illnesses is impressive.
There is a common miscon-
ception that the Macmillan
Cancer Trust is part of the
National Charity, Macmillan
Cancer Support. This is not
the case. The Macmillan Unit
at Christchurch (built in 1974) was the first of its kind in
the Country. The building was partially funded by Can-
cer Relief. The Macmillan Cancer Trust was founded to
support the unit and the care of cancer sufferers in
Christchurch and the surrounding areas. In 1997 Can-
cer Relief changed its name to Macmillan Cancer
Relief. The name Macmillan became synonymous with
Macmillan Nurses (provided by the National Charity)
who care for Patients all over the Country. It is not
surprising that our local Community, and the general
public are confused when there are two Charities with
very similar names.
Neal Williams, the Trust Secretary of the Macmillan
Cancer Trust said “It is clear that more and more of our
supporters are confused between us and the National
Charity, so we decided to re brand the Charity, to give
a clearer message to our supporters and the general
public. For people in our Community who wish to sup-
port our work, it is important for them to understand
that their donations are being spent locally, and not
going in to a National pot.”
Local Advertising & Marketing Com-
pany Aylesworth Fleming were given
the task of re-branding the Charity.
Account Director Andy Thomson
said “When we were approached to
conduct a full branding audit, the
Agency was extremely keen to get
involved. The local Charity’s multiple objectives and
diverse target audiences presented a particularly chal-
lenging task. We completed a thorough, multi-stage
audit over a four-month period which included exten-
sive market research (both qualitative and quantitative)
and ongoing creative development. The result is a
fresh, distinct identity that’s on brief and which we are
confident will support the work of this important local
charity going forward.”
The new name for the Macmillan Cancer Trust is
Macmillan Caring locally.

How you can help
The Macmillan Cancer Trust
relies on the generosity of its
supporters from the local Com-
munity. Over the past 35 years
people have baked cakes,
jumped out of airplanes, swam
the Channel, rattled collecting
tins, run Marathons, or just
handed over their hard-earned
cash, so that the Trust can
continue doing the vital work
that it does.
The Trust is indebted to the many
people over the years who have
included the Macmillan Cancer Trust
in their will. These Legacies have
made a huge difference to those in
our care at the Macmillan Unit, and to
the countless number of people who
have benefitted from the improve-
ments in cancer care and treatment
in the local Community.
If you would like to become one of
our Supporters, there are many ways
that you can help; and it needn‟t
mean donating money – your time is
just as important to us. Here are a
few ideas to start you off.
Supporting a Charity doesn‟t
always have to cost money.
Here are a few ways to support
the Macmillan Cancer Trust.

BRACHYTHERAPY
Brachytherapy is a form of
radiotherapy which is used to
treat conditions such as pros-
tate cancer. The process in-
volves placing a radioactive
material inside, or next to the
tumour. The major advantage to
this treatment is that it gives a
high dose of radiation directly to
the tumour, but a low dose to
normal tissue. It also reduces
the side effects experienced
through normal radiotherapy,
and treatment times are drasti-
cally reduced.
The Macmillan Cancer Trust
fund Brachytherapy treatment
for Christchurch, Bournemouth
and Poole, as part of its com-
mitment to improving the treat-
ment of cancer Patients in the
local Community.
Become a Volunteer. It would not
be possible to provide the care that
we do, without the invaluable help of
our Volunteers. They provide a vari-
ety of vital roles that help make the
Macmillan Unit a very special place.
If you have a few hours to spare, and
would like to make a big difference ,
please refer to our article VOLUN-
TEERS on the front page for details.
Payroll Giving. Payroll Giving is an
easy, tax effective way to support the
Macmillan Cancer Trust. Your dona-
tion is taken from your gross salary
(before tax is deducted), so that in
effect it costs you less to give more.
You can also receive immediate tax
relief of up to £4 for every £10 do-
nated. Ask your employer about
Payroll Giving, or for more advice go
to www.payrollgivingcentre.org.uk.
Sell your items on
eBay. It has never
been simpler to sell
on eBay, and the
beauty of it is that
you can donate a
percentage or all of
the proceeds to the Macmillan Can-
cer Trust. All you have to do is go to
www.ebay.co.uk, register for free,
and click on the SELL button. Follow
the instructions, and at the point
where it asks if you wish to donate to
a Charity, select „yes‟, then pick
Macmillan Cancer Trust from the list
of Charities, and away you go.
If you need help with setting this up,
please call Neal on 01202 477628.

“Legacies have
made a huge
difference to those
in our care”
The latest project undertaken by
the Macmillan Cancer Trust is the
brand new Multi Media Play Area
situated in the Visitors Lounge at
the Macmillan Unit.
The lounge already has a mini
snooker table, and a range of chil-
dren‟s books, puzzles and games,
but it was felt that it needed to be
brought up to date, to appeal to to-
day‟s technology savvy children and
teenagers.
As with every project, it is always
advisable to get advice from the sort
of person who is likely to be using the
facilities. So advice was taken from a
9 year old and a 12 year old, and
after much discussion on colour
schemes and materials, the project
was started.
The Mult i Media area has
„funky‟ (their words!) swivel chairs, a
high specification computer, with a
large, widescreen monitor. The moni-
tor can also be used as a television
with freeview. Alongside the com-
puter is an Xbox 360 game system &
a Wii, which are fed through the
computer onto the large screen for
the ultimate gaming experience.
To encourage visiting children with
more traditional pursuits, the game
area also has an enviable selection
of craft materials including coloured
card, coloured pens, bracelet mak-
ing kits, stickers and accessories.
Neal Williams, Trust Secretary
says “When children come to visit
their families at the Macmillan Unit,
we want it to be a positive experi-
ence. We believe that creating an
environment where children feel
most comfortable, will do just that.”
