Love is often described as an emotion that is filled with warmth, comfort, and stability. But when we transform love from a noun into a verb, from a concept into an action—the word brings us to a more

complex and inclusive meaning.

Love takes practice. It takes doing. It takes learning and growing. Love can bring us close to pain and escort us into the hand of our enemies. It can bring us bliss and produce great joy. Jesus made such bold declarations about love. Teaching us to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31) while also reminding us that everyone is our neighbor.

Love your neighbor as yourself. We think the second part is the hardest. To love others. But how much time do we take loving ourselves? Accepting ourselves. Offering ourselves kindness and compas-sion.

Are there times when perhaps we find it easier to love others more than we love ourselves? I think that is true sometimes. When we become aware of our own flaws and our own shortcomings, we may feel

guilt, shame, unease. In those moments, we may need to hold ourselves gently, lovingly, and graciously. That’s what God would want us to do.

Sometimes we hear cultural messages about “taking care of ourselves.” And advertisements sell us mani/pedis, massages, retail therapy. Self-love might include some pampering but it is not primarily

about indulgence. Loving ourselves so that we can love others begins with a kind outlook on every part of our lives—both our strengths and our weaknesses. It means looking at ourselves the way God looks at us. With the admiration of a parent toward a child. With the concern of a friend helping out another in need. With the restraint of a wise counselor that knows when to let the silence speak when words can not express the depth of our experience.

During this season of Lent, spend some time practicing love. And start by loving yourself so that you can love your neighbor.

Peace,

Pastor Brad

Dear Members of North Cape Lutheran Church,

Grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ! My name is Karl-John Stone, and I am honored to be joining the strong ministry of North Cape Lu-theran Church as I serve as your interim associate bridge pastor. Most people call me Pastor Karl-John. One of the main ways God works in our lives is through our relationships with other people, so I look forward to getting to know you over the next several months as you make preparations to call a new associate pastor. My duties will include pastoral care, preaching and worship leadership, and Christian education with adults and youth. I am a native of Queens, NY where my dad was a pastor and my mom a musician. I graduated from St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN) and Trinity Lutheran Seminary (Columbus, OH) and was ordained in 2001. Since then I have served a variety of congregational and synodical ministries in central Pennsyl-vania and Lincoln, Nebraska. I am a newcomer to southeast Wisconsin, having moved here in Novem-ber 2018 after my wife, Rev. Beth Ann L. Stone began her new call as the senior pastor of Mount Pleas-ant Lutheran Church in Racine. We live in Mount Pleasant and have two boys: Henry (8th grade) loves soccer, and Liam (6th grade) is an enthusiastic Scout. They are students at Gifford Middle School. Last year our family adopted a rescue Coonhound-Lab puppy who has enjoyed exploring the local dog parks and trails. I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, cycling, and garden-ing, and also like to read, play guitar, and follow baseball. Times of transition, such as we are now embarking upon, can be times of great growth when we turn everything over to God in prayer and faith. My prayer is for all of us at North Cape Lutheran to re-ceive the gifts the Holy Spirit has for us that we may deepen our commitment to Christ and share his love and grace for the sake of the world! Pastor Karl-John

The The BoardWalk

The BoardWalk is intended to update the Congregation monthly regarding the Church Board activities. In February the Board discussed Pastoral Staffing, 2019 Year-to-Date Financials, Capital Improvement Plan for 2019, Mission Ex-ploration Team, Endowment Fund, and Clergy Salary and Housing Designa-tion.

Pastoral Staffing: Pastor Karl-John Stone was introduced to the board members. We are very excited to have him join our congregation! 2019 Year-to- Date Financials: In the month of January, both income and expenses were below what had been projected. There will continue to be financial updates in the bulletin and newsletter. Capital Improvement Plan for 2019: Nancy Rasmussen from the Capital Improvement Planning Team updated the board on the progress of the sanctuary improvement project. Alan Jasperson has met with a few contrac-tors concerning this project. Bob Benson will be holding an informational session regarding the sanctuary painting and flooring project on February 17th between services. The Capital Improvement Planning Team plans to select proposals for the sanctuary flooring and painting by the March board meeting. MET Process: Patty Stritesky has volunteered to lead the Mission Exploration Team. The MET team will meet to dis-cuss congregational needs regarding pastoral staffing in hopes to have something in place by Sep-tember of 2019. Endowment Fund: After recommendation by the finance committee the board approved two resolutions:

1. Motion to approve the resolution to fund the North Cape Lutheran Church Mission Endowment with $100,000 invested in the ELCA Pooled Trust Fund A with money from the Howard Scott es-tate and the Legacy Fund.

2. Motion to approve the resolution fund the sanctuary redecorating project with funds from the golf outing, scrip, memorials ($8,000), WELCA ($5,000) and portions of the remaining Legacy Fund as needed not to exceed a total of $70,000.

Clergy Salary and Housing Designation: The board approved Pastor Brad’s housing allowance for 2019. Thank you to for your support during this time of transition as we welcome Pastor Karl-John Stone.

Worship Volunteer Options

Helping with worship is not difficult, but it is extremely fulfilling. Why not challenge yourself to volunteer in a new way this Lent season?

Reading scripture during the service (There are usually no big words, and if you say a Biblical name wrong, no one will know the difference...except maybe the 2 pastors)

Preparing Communion for either 8:00 or 10:30 (You get to use this really fun utensil to fill the tiny cups!)

Serve on the Altar Guild for one month—we have current openings for June and October (filling the can-dles with oil, changing the altar cloths and banner when necessary. Trust me– it is very fulfilling knowing you are the reason the candles don’t burn out during the service.)

Ushering (You get to sit in the back during the entire service!)

AV (You get to sit in the balcony and control the microphones… just saying)

Providing treats (They do not need to be homemade, just yummy! No need to make the coffee—Barb Welch takes care of that for us.)

Contact the head of each of these worship teams to volunteer your time. YOU will be glad you did!

Oak Ridge Bingo

Our next Oak Ridge Care Center Bingo Event is planned for Thurs-day, March 28, 2019. We are col-lecting items to be used for prizes, which might include: small flower arrangements either artificial or real, lotions, after shave, colognes, large print cards, lap blankets, afghans, necklaces, bracelets, or brooches, any spring or summer holiday deco-rations would be great, as well as any team sports wear. These items need to be new or clean and gently used and may be placed in the Oak Ridge Magazine Box in the entry hall. We are always so grateful for your donations and it is wonderful to see the smiles that these small items bring to the residents’ faces when they pick out just the right prize. We also could use additional help, as many of our regular team are in warmer climates or have health is-sues. We play for one hour – a small time commitment – if you are free in the afternoon. You just need to smile a lot and assist the resi-dents with spotting the numbers on their card. Even if you can’t com-mit long term to this ministry, we would certainly welcome your help this time. Please contact Kathie Greer @ 262-909-7755 or email [email protected] for addition-al information or to volunteer your help. Thank you.

El Salvador Ministry

We are planning our next trip to El Sal-vador and you are invited!

Our next delegation visit to El Salvador is planned for November 9-16, 2019. North Cape Lutheran Church, along with Galilee Lutheran Church in Pewaukee, is developing plans for a joint visit to our communities of El Chipilte and Romero. The goals for our visit are as follows:

1. Walk with the people of El Salvador, learn about them, their faith and com-munity needs

2. Support Pastor Martir’s ministry

3. Worship and fellowship together

4. Engage in the culture and history of El Salvador

During the trip you will be able to see the beauty of this Latin American coun-try, visit its capital city of San Salvador and engage in the rich culture. You will come back with a deeper faith knowing you received far more from the visit than you gave to it. During our last visit we had four teenage youth from Galilee with us. They enjoyed the trip and were a great addition to the delegation. We would like to see some youth from our church community join us this year. If they are not 18 years of age, a parent or assigned guardian is required to be part of the trip. Prayerfully consider joining our delegation. Maybe this is the right

time in your life for a faith journey? If you are interested in learning more please contact Mark or Tami Wittenberg, phone 262-835-2503 or [email protected]) or consider attending the information meetings planned for :

Sunday April 28th, 2019 at 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM in the Church Library

Wednesday May 8 th at 6:00PM in the Church Library

During the informational meetings you will learn more about El Salvador, the costs associated with travel and the agenda for this year’s visit. The deadline for sign up is July 15, 2019.

Meals for the Stillsons Recently one of our members, Mike Stillson, was hospitalized and had heart surgery. His wife, Amy, has had to take unpaid leave, and Mike has been unable to work. In order to help them out dur-ing this difficult and stressful time, we are organizing two meals per week to be made and delivered to them over the next month. Please use the sign up be-low and take a slot. Contact Amy to set up delivery dates/times when it is your turn. If you want to make a meal, but need help with delivery, contact the church office at 835-2206 or [email protected]. We would be glad to help get the food delivered for you. Amy’s contact information and Mike’s dietary concerns are included in the link. Thank you for your generosity! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0448aca828a1f94-meals
