MACARTHUR NEWS
The AGM Meeting of the Macarthur Advancement & Development Association Inc.
Next Meeting AGM on September 13th at the Macarthur Hotel, 6.30pm for dinner
A ‘drone’ photographer operating at this year’s
‘Orford Rally’ was asked if he would be prepared to
visit Macarthur Cemetery and take a series of pics
for us. We explained that our purpose was to enable
new, up-to-date images to be made from above each
Cemetery Section (Methodist, CE, Presbyterian, RC
& Lawn). This has now been done and new maps
produced, complete with the grave identification
number for each.
Other planned uses for the photos include draft-
ing of a new MCT letterhead, an updated Cemetery
Walk map and guide and mapping & interment rec-
ord materials for a Macarthur Cemetery Trust web-
site, which will be of significant value to visitors,
family history researchers and many others seeking
information about interments here.
For now, though, the attached photo, taken from
the eastern boundary and looking westwards, will
give Macarthur & District folk a new and interesting
perspective on our lovely little cemetery, previously
unseen from this new viewpoint. Readers should
also watch for other images from the series in future
editions of “Mac News”.

Macarthur Lions Club – September
Well winter is nearly over and spring is on the
way. Time to get into our gardens, so if you are
looking for a rose to plant, contact Treloar Roses in
Portland who have a “Lions Rose” for sale of which
$1.00 per rose goes to Lions Childhood Cancer
Research.
Our members are catering for Jack and Glenys
Sharrock’s clearing sale on Sunday 17th September,
come down to Bessiebelle, get yourself a bargain and
have a cuppa and something to eat.
Sunday 24th September from 9am-1pm is our
annual Market Day held in the hall and surrounds,
looking forward to seeing lots of people helping sup-
port your local Lions Club. Sites at $10.00 per table
are still available, contact 0427101559 to book in.
Our BBQ at this year’s market is supporting Lions
Childhood Cancer Research Biggest BBQ which is
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Globally.
80,000 children have their lives cut short held every
year and the hope is to raise over $500,000.00.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month
Globally, 80,000 children have their lives cut
short by cancer each year and more research is need-
ed to reduce this statistic. Cancer is the single great-
est cause of death from disease in Australian chil-
dren, with 1 in every 500 kids developing some type
of cancer before the age of 15. These frightening sta-
tistics are what motivate groups such as ALCCRF to
redouble their efforts every year to raise money to
support these children and their families through vital
research into cures for childhood cancers.
How did Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
start?
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month was first
declared by former US President Barack Obama in
2010. Since then, cancer organisations all around the
world have used this awareness month to put the
spotlight on children's cancer and highlight the need
for improved diagnosis, treatment and outcomes.
Every year in September, charities around the globe
honour Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to raise
awareness and critical funds for childhood cancer. In
the US, these groups include the American Child-
hood Cancer Organisation and the American Chil-
dren’s Cancer Foundation, while here in Australia
participants include ALCCRF and many other
Organisations including The Zero Childhood Cancer
Program an initiative of Sydney Children’s Hospital,
Kids Cancer Centre and the Children’s Cancer Insti-
tute of Australia
What is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month?
The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness
Month is to raise awareness of the types of cancers
that primarily affect children, as well as to help raise
funds for research and family support. The Gold Rib-
bon is the international awareness symbol of child-
hood cancer and merchandise created for the event
typically includes the colour gold. Events and activi-
ties held during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
vary widely between countries and organisations, but
whether it’s a high-profile lecture tour or a backyard
barbecue for a gold coin donation, all have the
common goal of raising awareness and funds.
How can you get involved?
The best way you can contribute on a local level
during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to
make some kind of a donation. This could include: •
a cash donation to Australian Lions Childhood
Cancer Research Foundation • A donation of your
time to raise funds - You could rattle a tin, help at an
event, hold an event of your own.
