Macar thur Advancement & Development Association Inc. Issue Nº 208 JUNE 2016
MACARTHUR NEWS
The next General Meeting of the Macarthur Advancement & Development Association Inc.
Wednesday 8th June 7.30pm at the Macarthur Senior Citizens rooms
Support Your Local Dairy Farmers
The big news story over the past few weeks has
been the loss of income our dairy farmers have been
faced with. In a time when costs are continually rising
potential losses could see many farmers being paid less
for their milk than it costs them to produce. This pro-
duces a flow on effect in communities, farmers need to
cut costs and may mean they are forced to put off farm-
workers who then have less to spend in local business-
es. The farmers also cut back on their spending too so
we now have three layers in the community feeling the
effects.
How can we help? The newspapers are promoting
the suggestion that we should all boycott the cheap su-
permarket milk. While this might seem to be a simple
solution, the truth is that the farmer gets the same price
for all milk, regardless of the end price.
The big supermarkets absorb a loss on the cheap mil
and bread in order to tempt us into their stores. The
farmgate price being paid was based on unreasonably
optimistic projections for sales of the value added dairy
products. When you buy butter, cheese, icecream and
yoghurt, make sure you buy Australian first and, if pos-
sible Victorian made. Increasing our consumption of
dairy products will also have a positive effect. If we all
do our part, we will help support dairying and keep the
farmers afloat.
Of course, we need to provide moral support for our
local dairy farmers and if necessary practical support.
As a community we need to unify and help our neigh-
bours in any way possible for their sake and also for
the future of our community. Dairy farmers, please let
us know if there are other ways we can help.
Make your purchases count!

WANTED: KINDER KIDS!!
ENROLMENTS NOW OPEN FOR
MACARTHUR KINDER 2017
Enrolments are now open for our 3 and 4 year old
programs in 2017. Please drop in to the kindergarten
to collect an enrolment form or call 55761296 to
have one posted to you.
The committee is currently reviewing our program
and we’re inviting input from current and prospec-
tive parents to ensure we are delivering a model that
best suits our community.
At present our 4-year-old program runs three 5 hour
days a week from 8.45am to 1.45pm. We’d like to
hear from you if in 2017 you would prefer us to run
two 7.5 hour days per week (possibly 8.30am-
4.00pm) to fit in with work or other commitments?
Macarthur Kindergarten offers an engaging, interac-
tive and caring program which is unique in that
children are encouraged to engage with their local
community and environment. Smaller classes mean
that children are given individual attention to help
them develop at their own pace. We also have a
dedicated and energetic kindergarten committee that
is committed to keeping fees well below comparable
services (current 2016 fees are $185/term).
If you have or know of any kindergarten aged
children in the area please contact us with your
thoughts on 0459 149 280.
Insomnia -a Naturopathic
perspective
Insomnia is a sleep disorder that concerns with difficulty in falling or staying asleep, commonly shown as poor quality sleep or day time tiredness. Over one third of the Australian population experi-ence insomnia and only about 5% need medical attention. To handle the symptoms of insomnia, factors such as stress, changes in sleeping environ-ment, medical conditions such as unstable blood pressure, acute pain conditions and over usage of stimulants such as cigarettes, coffee, tea or some stimulant medications need to be well managed. See your practitioners if you have persistent (over a month) insomnia.
To improve your sleep quality, start by relaxing your physical and mental being, reduce stress and smoking, avoid consuming tea, coffee, chocolate or caffeinated drinks before bedtime. Socialization, taking up suitable exercise, enjoying sentimental music and cultivating the habit of same time wak-ing up in the morning will help to bring your sleep pattern to a harmonious routine. Enjoying a glass of warm milk or a green apple before bedtime may also help to induce a better sleep.
Holistically, realigning your body with your in-
ner self to a harmonious state will naturally give
you a better quality sleep in the long run. This may
be achieved through a spiritual faith, appropriate
meditation technique or taking a prescription of
suitable flower therapy.
Who was the Men’s Shed member who was under the Shed floor carrying out some maintenance on a recent Thursday and who, after a hot few hours of work wriggled out (no mean feat in a very confined space), struggled out of his overalls and then realized his glasses were still on a joist under the building? After donning the overalls again, he had to wriggle all the way back and retrieve the glasses, then repeat the trip in reverse. Rumour has it that by the time he surfaced again he was so exhausted he needed help getting the overalls off.

MARGARET ANNETT
Margaret was one of the most
compassionate persons I have had
the pleasure to meet. One of natures
true ladies.
Her input to the Senior Citizens as
Secretary was always done with
enthusiasm, helping wherever she
could . Nothing was too much trouble.
Her cheerful presence will be greatly
missed. You have left us with many
happy memories.

Work has begun on a facelift at the Courthouse.
Members of the Historical Society recently held a
working bee to empty the main body of the court-
house of all the furniture and exhibits. Moyne Shire
contractors then moved in to prepare and paint the
courtroom. In recent days a floor sander has been
doing the floors and by the time you read this the
work will have been completed and the Historical
Society will be organizing another working bee to
restore the furniture and exhibits. Geoff Sharrock
(Historical Society President) is delighted with how
the building looks so don’t forget to go and have a
look when the Courthouse is open. Look for the
date and time in a future edition of the Macarthur
News

When the teamsters toiled on the Northern track
From Belfast’s sheltered harbour
They knew of a place where they could face
A rest from their weary labour.
The crossed the Eumeralla stream
And let the bullocks drink and graze
They camped awhile and lived in the style
Of those old historic days.
The bullockies were thirsty too,
So was built the Eumeralla Pub,
And the seed was sown and a town has grown
From out of the ti-tree scrub.
Macarthur has seen some changes
Since eighteen fifty-two
But change it must or turn to dust
In conditions ever new.
Horse and buggy days have been and gone,
Our lives were then up-ended,
By motorized loads and black-top roads
Our horizons were extended.
Blacksmiths changed to garages,
Now today they’re only bowsers
Two General Stores have closed their doors
And no-where to buy your trousers.
Our services are closing down on us
And it seems our town is sinking
So we must change and re-arrange
The way that we are thinking.
Let’s have a look at what we have
And not bemoan our fate,
Perhaps we’ll find that we’ve been blind
To successes at our gate.
Nield’s Contractors showed the way
To get the big wheel turning,
Now by their trade many men are paid
The wages they are earning.
News Freighters were a force unknown
When Ronny sold the shop,
Papers can’t be late so through the State
His trucks can never stop.
The Butter Factory lives again
Thanks to ‘Chubb’ and ’Carrots’ vision,
They’re in control where the wool bales roll
Against worldly competition.
Chris Henderson has moved into town
With lathes and millers by the ton,
He’s an engineer who can make any gear
If you say it can’t be done.
All these men have followed their dream
Like the old-time pioneers
They’ve made their play and aim to stay
Against all odds and fears.
They look to faraway markets
Beyond MacArthur’s limited field
Against the rest of Aussies best
Without a multi-national shield.
Though Macarthur hasn’t moved
The big cities now are nearer
And we can commute on a country route
With traffic so much clearer.
Our farms have seen the changes too
The sound of sheep and beeves
Have all been lost at unknown cost
To a Blue Gums rustling leaves.
Don’t look to the past for salvation,
The way ahead is never clear,
We must adapt or we’ll be trapped
In the chains of yesteryear.
There’s opportunities around today
Us oldies could never know,
But younger eyes can scan the skies
So, “Come on, give them a go”.
I penned this during the mid 90’s when the town
seemed to be going downhill. People were so
damned negative!
