BROADWATER 30 YEAR REUNION
Our playgroup had their 30 Year Re-Union on Sunday 20th
March 2011. What an achievement to have a playgroup
going continuous for 30 years serving our region. The
organising committee had a lot of thinking to do to send out
invitations to all the founding, past and present members –
we apologise if we missed families as this does happen.
We had about 30 families there with heaps of kids. Had a
birthday cake made by Tamara Hardy which was cut by the
founding member Kathy Miller and our youngest member
Georgina MacDonald from Bessiebelle. Afternoon tea was
supplied by the current playgroup members. There was a
display of old and new toys, boy have times changed!
As President of the playgroup I would like to sincerely
thank all involved in providing a function for our commu-
nity to enjoy. The work by the founding/past and present
members was fantastic and the enthusiasm of these people
to get things done never ceases to amaze me. Thankyou
everyone.
Leonie Dyson
President
PS: Playgroup is on every Thursday (except school holidays, unless
decided otherwise) 10am to 12noon. Bring food for your child/ren
and cuppa is supplied. More information: Leonie Dyson 5576 4251
or Louise Hill, Secretary 5576 1112.

Macarthur Community Auction
We were blessed with beautiful weather for this
year’s Community Auction, both on Saturday when
the goods were received and set out and also for the
auction itself on the Sunday. Community groups set
up stalls, the Lions were there with their BBQ, the
Senior Citizens with Dim Sims, baked goods and
yummy Lemon Butter, along with bookmarks and
other odds and ends. The Pre School parents pro-
vided hot and cold drinks along with a huge array of
baked goodies. The Tennis Club raffle of two trailer
loads of firewood was a hit, even if I didn’t win
one. Jenny O’Brien’s fresh homegrown fruit and
vegetables were enticing but the highlight of the
day was Andrew Duyvestyn with his coach, pulled
by two of his beautiful horses. Andrew was a big
hit with the children (and some “big kids” too). We
hope you raised a good amount for the Cancer in
Kids Association, Andrew.
Our thanks to members of the Men’s Shed for their
help over the two days. Ernie, Charlie, Pat and
Bernie take a bow. MADA is also grateful to the
locals who either brought goods along to be sold or
came to buy. Your support is vital to the success of
this annual event and is much appreciated.
A very special thank you to Warren Clark from
Lanyon’s Real Estate and his young offsider Simon
Thomas. Warren stepped in at the last moment
when our auctioneer was unable to come. Warren
and Simon did a great job and we thank them for
their community spirit.
All in all it was a great day!

BREAKAWAY KNEBSWORTH
NEWS
GIFT AFTERNOON
Sunday 27th February the Breakaway, Knebsworth Hall
came to life when a gift afternoon was held for Alice Rhook
prior to her marriage. Family and friends attended and en-
joyed various fun games and activities. Alice and fiancé
Adam opened the lovely array of gifts and thanked all for
their attendance and presents. Afternoon tea brought the
friendly afternoon to a close. Best wishes Alice and
Adam, may you have many years of happiness together.
RUBY WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Red was the colour of the day at the Breakaway Knebsworth
Hall on Saturday 5th March 2011 when Alison and John
McDonnell from Knebsworth celebrated their Ruby—40th
Wedding Anniversary. Red and white streamers, red hearts,
red horse shoes decorating the walls, red balloons, red and
white serviettes and red tablecloths. Folk travelled from
various parts of Victoria, NSW and Queensland to attend.
Alison and John were thrilled with the attendance of daugh-
ter Rebecca, son in law Greg and grandchildren Jordi, Aayla
and Blake Ryan from Warwick in Queensland.
The main midday meal consisted of BBQ meat and delicious
salads followed by a variety of sweets. Many guests were
invited to speak telling humorous stories of by gone days.
A lovely anniversary cake made by Margaret Annett and
decorated by Nancy Gibbins from Heywood adorned the
table.
A great friendly, fun day was had by approximately 60 guests
in attendance.
Congratulations — may the “Red” turn to “Gold”

Well, the 2010/11 season is over with our club being
very successful this year. We had two teams in ‘B’
grade and in the finals. In the first final the two teams
played each other (that was a blow) and orange came out
victorious against green by 1 game. Last week in the
grand final we played Hawkesdale at Hawkesdale –
another close one with us both being level on games but
going down 5 sets to 4 and we received one injury!
Thankyou to all the players who came to training,
played on Saturdays and those who helped around the
club. Our club is successful because of the members
who are passionate about playing tennis locally,
thankyou. Our membership list was good and we look
forward to seeing new and old players again in October
2011.
The juniors also had a good season with a round robin
and matches played at Broadwater and Hawkesdale
alternatively. We have a few juniors coming through
who have improved so much this year. Our Junior
Tennis Coaching Program will continue in the last week
of the September holidays, with the help of the
Warrnambool Indoor Tennis Centre providing a
professional coach for 4 days. Everyone welcome.
Further notices will be out closer to the time.

ANNIVERSARY OF “THE
FLOOD”
It is just 65 years since Macar-
thur experienced the biggest
flood ever to surge down the
Eumeralla on the 17th March
1946. On the night of that day,
an unbelievable 303mm caused
a flood that washed away the
bridge and the Southern road
approach. The Boys Dressing
Room on the South Eastern
bank and the swimming crates
where kids could safely learn to
swim were washed away, as were
the Girls Dressing Room on the
North Eastern bank and timber
landings on each side of the
river.
But the worst of the disaster
was the loss of the Sparrow
Family down on the Gorrie
Road, when they tried to get
out from their farmhouse next
morning.
The tragedy is recorded in a
poem written by Graeme Ralph
of Hamilton. (page 7)

THE GORRIE TRAGEDY
On the reaches of the Gorrie Swamp, with Mt.Eccles standing by
Where the Ibises and black swans wade, and gentle breezes sigh
On a low and rugged basalt ridge in a setting so sublime
Stands a pine tree with a tragic tale, shrouded in the mists of time
The Sparrows, George and Lillian, had their farmhouse on this site
Where they worked and dreamed together and saw their future bright.
Son Roy was home, the war was done, his life could now be planned
While daughter, Mavis soon, in joy, would wear a wedding band.
And the youngest two, named Ron and Bruce, they knew peace now prevailed
The world was at their feet it seemed with the chances it entailed
The land was rich and pastures lush and the stock was thriving too
They’d all worked hard in tougher times and their faith had got them through
But there came a night, a fateful night with dark clouds building high
Wind and lightning, thunder loud as the storm broke through the sky
The tempest ranged throughout the dark with rain like never before
The heavens they were torn apart with the ferocity of war
As the waters rose on that dreadful night, they huddled close in fear
“Have mercy Lord” their silent prayer “Deliver us from here”
“Now Roy” said George “You’re brave and strong, this is my urgent plea.
Go forth to Bessiebelle, where some chance of help may be”
But as there broke a sallow dawn, with the water rising still
They could not wait, but must escape, pray let it be God’s will
One hundred yards out to the road, the submerged track it wound
They hoped that they could make it there to safer solid ground
No boat or floating craft was there, no one could swim, of course
So they took their chances with the cart and the trusty old work horse
And onward then in fearful dread George led them to the gate
But as water swirled and rain came down, they left the turn too late
A sudden lurch and all was lost in the water chill and deep
Trapped underneath, there was no hope, the Lord their souls would keep
The father helpless and distraught as grief fulfilled his breast
In mercy then, he too was called, to take eternal rest
Now the breezes sigh in sadness and the farmhouse long has gone
But the silent witness still remains, the pine tree all alone
And there’s nought to show for young lives lost and dreams they’d not attain
Back in “46 when the floods came down on the Eumeralla plain.
