WHY ENGAGE WITH THE ARTS

Adapted from “Learning Through the Arts” by Dee Dickinson

• The arts provide opportunities for expression—bringing the inner workings of ourselves out into the world around us.

• The arts give us a language that all people can speak, connecting us culturally and socially by breaking down the barriers of economics and education.

• The arts allow us to learn about and appreciate other cultures.

• The arts provide the means for everyone to learn, improving academic achievement through test scores, and enhancing social skills as well as critical and creative thinking.

• The arts make it possible to use personal strengths in meaningful ways, allowing bridges to understanding difficult abstractions.

Learning to trust and develop friendships while engaged in creativity brings the connection down to one-on-one and allows the larger community to gather and experience the arts together.

PROGRAM NOTESCREDOAntonio Lucio Vivaldi was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric. Born in Venice, he was recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He is known mainly for composing many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons and the choral Gloria.

Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi (who had been ordained as a Catholic priest) was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740. Vivaldi also had some success with expensive stagings of his operas in Venice, Mantua and Vienna. After meeting the Emperor Charles VI, Vivaldi moved to Vienna, hoping for preferment. However, the Emperor died soon after Vivaldi’s arrival, and Vivaldi himself died less than a year later in poverty.

After his death, Vivaldi’s music slid into obscurity until a vigorous revival in the 20th century. Today, he ranks among the most popular and widely recorded of Baroque composers.

Credo has four movements. The first movement adorns the chorus’ simple rhythms with the orchestra playing 16th notes. The second movement is a brief choral episode in the stile antico, borrowing thematic material from the composer’s Magnificat. The fourth movement is based on a quarter note/eighth note motif similar to the first movement, and closes with a fugue. The first (and final) movements open with a motif which bears similarity to a brief passage found in the first movement of the Gloria.

SNOW ANGELSnow Angel is a five-movement choral work that is touching singers and audiences across the globe. After receiving performances at a host of prestigious venues including the 10th World Symposium on Choral Music, the 2014 Chorus America Conference, and on CBC Radio’s 2011 nationwide Christmas Eve broadcast, Snow Angel is becoming a regularly performed work across Canada and the United States. Demand for the piece internationally is continuing to grow and the set has been performed by choirs in England, Australia, South Korea and The Netherlands.

“Through song and narrative, Snow Angel weaves together stories of love and light, rebirth and rejuvenation and highlights the strength and beauty a child’s voice can bring to our often troubled world. The narrative between movements, written by Lisa Helps, is spoken by three angels: the first, old and grey, looking back at a different time of life. The second, young and tattooed, aching to make a difference in the life of a human charge. The third, a playful angel child, happy to bring a smile to the face of a sad friend.”

~ Composer Sarah Quartel

Canadian composer, conductor and educator Sarah Quartel is known for her fresh and exciting approach to the choral experience. Quartel’s compositions have been featured by groups such as the National Youth Choir of Canada, the Nathaniel Dett Chorale and the a cappella group Rajaton. In summer 2014, Quartel’s work Snow Angel was performed at the prestigious World Symposium on Choral Music in Seoul, South Korea. In 2015 her ACDA commissioned work Wide Open Spaces will receive its premiere performance under the baton of Bob Chilcott at the American Choral Directors Association national conference in Salt Lake City. This orchestration of Snow Angel was created for this concert.

SUNRISE MASS“The reason I used English titles, seemingly unrelated to the (mostly) Latin texts, for the movements in this setting of the Mass has mainly to do with the initial idea behind Sunrise Mass. I wanted the musical development of the work to evolve from the most transparent and spacey, to something completely earthy and grounded; from nebulous and pristine to more emotional and dramatic, and eventually warm and solid — as a metaphor for human development from child to adult, or as a spiritual journey. Most of my favorite composers are film composers working in America today, and this piece is partly influenced by movies and film scores from the past few years that I love dearly.”

~ Ola Gjeilo

Ola Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo) was born in Norway in 1978, and moved to the United States in 2001 to begin his composition studies at the Juilliard School in New York City.

Gjeilo’s concert works are performed all over the world, and his debut recording as a pianist-composer, the lyrical crossover album Stone Rose, was followed by its 2012 sequel, Piano Improvisations. Many of Gjeilo’s choral works are featured on Phoenix Chorale’s bestselling Northern Lights album, which is devoted entirely to his music for choir. All three albums are available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc.

A full-time concert music composer, Gjeilo is also very interested in film, and his music often draws inspiration from movies and cinematic music. He currently lives in New York City with his wife Laura.

SONGS OF CONSCIENCEPeter “Pete” Seeger (1919–2014) was an American folk singer and activist. A fixture on nationwide radio in the 1940s, he also had a string of hit records during the early 1950s as a member of the Weavers, most notably their recording of Lead Belly’s “Goodnight, Irene,” which topped the charts for 13 weeks in 1950. Members of the Weavers were blacklisted during the McCarthy Era. In the 1960s, he re-emerged on the public scene as a prominent singer of protest music in support of international disarmament, civil rights, counterculture and environmental causes.

A prolific songwriter, his best-known songs include “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” (with Joe Hickerson), “If I Had a Hammer” (“The Hammer Song”) (with Lee Hays of the Weavers), and “Turn! Turn! Turn!” (lyrics adapted from Ecclesiastes), which have been recorded by many artists both in and outside the folk revival movement and are sung throughout the world. “Flowers” was a hit recording for the Kingston Trio (1962); Marlene Dietrich, who recorded it in English, German and French (1962); and Johnny Rivers (1965). “If I Had a Hammer” was a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary (1962) and Trini Lopez (1963), while the Byrds had a number one hit with “Turn! Turn! Turn!” in 1965.

Seeger was one of the folksingers most responsible for popularizing the spiritual “We Shall Overcome” (also recorded by Joan Baez and many other singer-activists) that became the acknowledged anthem of the 1960s American Civil Rights Movement, soon after folk singer and activist Guy Carawan introduced it at the founding meeting of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960.

All three songs in this set were orchestrated for this concert and the choral arrangement of “The Bells of Rhymney” (also made popular by The Byrds) was created for this concert. As a songwriter and performer, Pete Seeger was truly the singing conscience of America.
