THE CITY #THECITY#

Holland’s oldest and most southerly cityand one that strategically straddles theborder with Belgium and Germany,Maastricht can trace its history back towhen the Romans fortified the then tinytown on the banks of the great Maas River. Its impressive old buildings that standseveral storeys high around Vrijthof, abusy square in its old town, still hint at itsyears of importance. Here, street cafés andselect little shops make it a magnet forresidents and visitors alike keen to relaxand watch the world go by. The area isbest explored on foot, especially if wantingto study the statues and sculptures thatadorn the streets.

Maastricht, today, is a multi-cultural city, largely because of its population ofstudents that study at its universityfaculties, and the fact that it is a significantcentre for business and industry – it isknown worldwide for its ceramics andpapermaking. The city is also a centre ofgovernment, and the Treaty on EuropeanUnion was signed by the heads ofgovernment in the city in February 1992.

It offers lots for visitors to see and do,among the ‘must sees’ are thefortifications, the old town and its StServaasbasiliek monument, the gothic StJanskerk and the city’s oldest building, theOnze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek. Along withexperiencing Stokstraat, a picturesquestreet of tempting shops and galleries,

visitors ought to check out Wyck andCéramique-Wijk on the modern RightBank.
