In response to widespread feedback, in 2013 we have taken a different approach to the conference program. We have scheduled all the plenary sessions on “Super Saturday” 18 May, International Museum Day. The keynote speakers are all Australians with significant international experience to reflect upon.

The 39 concurrent sessions on Sunday 19 and Monday 20 May are being ‘curated’ by convenors who will ensure that speakers address common issues and solutions to problems, going beyond the ‘show and tell’ approach and adopting a range of different formats.

As the conference theme is How museums work: people, industry and nation, sessions will explore working in museums and career paths, working together and collaborations, the business and sustainability of museums, and telling Australia’s stories in the 21st century. Indigenous themes are well represented as are the national networks and key museum activities such as technology, exhibitions, conservation, accessibility and cultural diversity. International speakers will examine work in Asia and the Pacific, relating Australia to our region.

The conference proper is preceded by the Regional, Remote and Community Museums Day. Meetings for the Museums Australia Council, the Council of Australian Museum Directors and Museums Australia National Networks will also be held in Canberra at this time, creating a true hub of museum activities. A lively social program, a substantial trade show and a busy schedule of excursions to institutions in the national capital will all contribute to an outstanding conference in this year of Canberra’s centenary.
