Over 600 people participated in this year’s SRBX Safety Expo with classes ranging from ladder safety, crane and forklift operating to management and leadership train-ing. This year’s Expo kicked off with Chief Dale Carnes as the featured keynote, speaking on how to expect the
unexpected on a job site. Also featured was an exhibition hall with over 20 exhibitors, a fall rescue and confined space entry rescue demonstration and food trucks from Mama Kim’s and The Dive.

Eliminating Water-Based Problems in Concrete
Building condos 12 feet from the beach along the Pacific Ocean carries with it a number of problems: water intrusion and coastal water vapors, mold, rusting rebar, and corrosive soils, just to name a few. Ed Prentice of Prentice Construction and the rest of the project team for The Strand Condos in Oceanside needed a solution that could tame the elements of the Pacific. That’s where Moxie came in: Prentice and the team were able to solve every problem listed, and more, by utilizing the Moxie 1800 Admixture. “We literally water and vapor proofed every cubic yard of concrete…thank you so much for making an impossible project on the Pacific Ocean a success” (Ed Prentice, President, Prentice Construction).
The Science of Vapor Proofing Concrete
As the water in typical concrete evaporates, capillaries form which weakens the concrete and allows water and vapor to pass through. Along with that, water-soluble salts within the concrete are left and eventually make their way to the surface, creating efflorescence. The CREATE Mentoring Program celebrated their Awards Banquet on March 20, 2018 at the DoubleTree Hotel. Nearly 300 students participated in CREATE this year, a program which places industry professionals in the classroom and helps guide students in completing a RFP over the course of seven months. Students are required to complete 14 deliverables, including a client needs assessment, site plans, cost estimates and a final presentation. More than $30,000 in Academic and Summer Academy Scholarships were awarded. Thank you to Mary Teichert for serving as this year’s Keynote Speaker. SRBX reported in April the passing of Dick Nickles, a legend in the Sacramen-to construction industry. A partner in Nielsen-Nickles Construction Company, his firm built and renovated many icon-ic commercial buildings in Sacramento, including the Sacramento Community Center Theater, education buildings at UC Davis and Sacramento State, and the Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramen-to. After 14 years in construction, Dick sold his interest in his firm and returned to UC Berkeley at the age of 47, earning an M.S. degree in construction engineer-ing and management. From there, he launched a second career as an educator.
Dick joined the civil engineering faculty at California State University, Sacramen-to, and developed the school’s construc-tion management program. During the 15 years Dick taught, he influenced and helped shape many students into con-struction industry leaders and business owners.
The Sacramento building community is indebted to Dick for his contributions to our industry. To continue his legacy, donations to honor Dick can be made by contributing to the Richard A. Nickles Scholarship Endowment Fund at Sacra-mento State. Contributions can be sent in care of:

The Passing of Dick NicklesS R B X G O V E R N M E N T A F FA I R SSRBX Is Fighting Against Rent Control, But We Need Your HelpBy Tim Murphy, SRBX CEO and Marlin Cole, Schetter Electric, Inc.
Efforts are now underway to place rent control before voters in several cities throughout California, including here in Sacramento.
The legislature has made a number of at-tempts to impose rent control. All have failed, including an effort this past Janu-ary, which SRBX helped to defeat. Propo-nents have now turned to the ballot box, and are gathering signatures right here in Sacramento.
There is a housing crisis in California. H o w e v e r , rent control – and spe-cifically this proposed ini-tiative – is not the solution.
In every rent control com-munity – San Francisco, Berkeley, Oak-land, Santa Monica, West Hollywood and Los Angeles – its impacts have been dev-astating. Rents in San Francisco surpass New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo, despite a rent control ordinance in place for nearly 40 years.
Independent academic experts agree, and experience in cities who are experiment-ing with rent control proves that this ini-tiative will stop the construction of rental housing, exacerbate the housing crisis, and make it significantly harder for mid-dle class families to afford a place to live.
Several construction-related associations, in collaboration with the Sacramento Valley Apartment Association, have been
working over the last several months to develop the campaign infrastructure needed to defeat this initiative.
In order to be successful, we need our in-dustry to support our efforts.
During the Month of May, we are asking each member of SRBX to donate to the SRBX PAC to help defeat rent control in our region. Our goal is $30K for the month
of May, which will help pro-vide critical r e s o u r c e s to our cam-paign’s out-reach efforts: c o n d u c t i n g on-going vot-er research, policy re-search, gen-erate mailers and other tac-tics.
With your support, you become an even more important part of the political pro-cess. If every member were to donate at least $25, we would reach our fundraising goal for May.
