Dear Friends,

Actually I'm not sure if it's summer or winter, so it's difficult to know what to recommend. The craziest deal of the season has to be the $1 000 to Thailand on El Al's new direct flightto Bangkok. Believe it or not, this includes 8 nights in a hotel and a few tours. The price isvalid until the beginning of March and will probably then only increase by approximately$100. Give us a call for details.

My son llan, after his army service, is in South America following a long camping tour downAfrica. I've often tried to enthuse you about Botswana and it's game parks. He does it betterthan 1 ...

So this is it, the jewel, the diamond, the pearl of Africa. This is where it all began, whereit all will end ... the Okovanga Delta. It's as if this place is the heart of Africa, the riversare the arteries and the delta is the heart pumping life into the bush, into the animals, into us. Tuesday morning we set off in our makoras to explore the delta, but not beforea local elephant paid us a visit and whacked a couple of tents and trees. We had the most brilliant guide. Couldn't believe it but he was born in 1915, whichmakes him 78. Never have I seen anyone in that physical condition at that age. Neverhave I seen anyone of 28 in that condition! He looks a bit like a bushman - skinny, short, with a muscular round face and big smile. Just to watch him talk is an experience. Youcan understand almost every word. When he talks about giraffe he sticks his neck uphigh. He can walk like a buck and sway like an elephant, but not as an act... that's theway he talks. Every muscle is perfect, every imitation is exact. His name is Botswa andhe made the experience so special for me. This is the first walking safari I have done inAfrica. Botswa, of course, is the best tracker in the business. Walk alongside him andhe'll point outlmpala tracks, Zebra, Hyena, Waterbuck, Elephant and Hippo droppings.H e k n o w s i t a l l .

At one point Botswa stopped, felt the ground, smelled the dust and said: "Wild dogs".We bent low and went stalking through the bush. No one knew what was going on, weturned left, then right and left again, and suddenly, after going for 300 yards, we werestanding in front of a pack of 32 wild dogs ripping an impala to pieces. Vultures andMarabu stalks were waiting impatiently nearby. And us standing and watching all this! Some day I'll be able to say that I went tracking with the Great Botswa, Chief Botswahimself.

Well, if you don't want to put Botswana on your next itinerary, then 1 don't know! Next letter1 U include a few choice pieces about Chile aixl Argentina.Best regards,

Terry KesselManaging Director

Changing1994 ushers in fresh hope and the tantalizingpromise of peace and prosperity. It will also be ayear that welcomes an increase in aliyah fromSouth Africa. The staff at Telfed are in top gearto meet the needs and requirements of our newolim - as you will read in this issue. The new year also ushers in a new editorialcommittee and a new editor, Adam Gordon.Adam was a sub-editor at The Star newspaper. In welcoming the new, I bid farewell to the oldteam - editorial committee chairman, HertzclKatz, and the inimitable Fanny Robinson, whoserved with distinction as editor for seven years.Fanny was involved at every level of the magazine, from content to advertising and postage,

the guardgiving so much of her time that her husband,Walter, remarked the other day: "You know,David, now that Fanny has retired, I have rediscovered my wife. It is a sheer joy".Well, one husband's joy is a communities lossand, on behalf of all, I thank Fanny for her yearsof selfless service and a job well done. The new year is sure to demand the same dedication and commitment from the new editorialteam. We will endeavour to meet the changesand challenges that lie ahead.Telfed Magazine looks forward to your continued support and interest.

Gearing up for South African olim

Bold and beautiful... an architects impression of part of the new Central Park project in Ra'anana.

Aliyah from South Africa is increasing and, inview of uncertain times ahead, the steady tricklecould become a flood. In 1992, 250 people madealiyah; 600 arrived in 1993. According to thenumber of aliyah files being opened in SouthAfrica, 1 200 olim are expected in 1994.In anticipation, Telfed has starting a number oflarge housing and ulpan projects in Ra'anana,Ashkelon and on various kibbutzim. These projects, tailor-made for South Africans, have been set up in conjunction with the JewishAgency, the Ministry of Absorption and the various municipalities concerned.

Ra 'anana : t he nex t waveTelfed has taken an option on 30 apartments inthe brand new Central Park scheme in Ra'anana,to run a direct absorption project. Telfed willwork in conjunction with the Ra'anana municipality and its mayor, Ze'ev Bielski (a one timesuccessful shaliach in Johannesburg).Olim will be provided with an ulpan, a creche, rent subsidies and a subsistance allowance for thefirst sbc months. They will also get schooling andextra- lessons for their chi ldren. Basic furni turewill be available on loan until olims' lifts arrive. There will be social and cultural activities, andfi e l d t o u r s .While the olim are staying here, Telfed will givethem employment counselling and information

about government facilities. The olim will havethe opportunity to rent their apartments for upto five years, at reasonable rentals. Many applications for this scheme, which beginsin May 1994, have already been received.

Ashkelon: the town South Africanshelped buildTelfed, with the assistance of the Jewish Agency, will be taking an option on apartments to whichthe olim may go directly or after spending a fewweeks at an absorbtion centre. Olim will receive

financial assistance in the form of rental subsidies and subsistance allowances - for the ulpanperiod - from the Ministry of Absorbtion. The Ashkelon municipality will help organisekindergardens, school and cultural activities. Basic furniture will be available until personal liftsa r r i v e .

Ashkelon is expanding at a rapid rate and manynew developments are under way. Neverthelesshousing is still comparatively cheap and there isno shortage of apartments to rent. There are many South African families alreadyliving in Ashkelon and they have formed a committee to receive and care for the newcomers.

Singles and young couples without children cantake part in the Academic Ulpan of Ashkelon. This is an unique five month programme where,in addition.to introductory level Hebrew studies, the ulpan offers a wide variety of social andcultural activities as well as seminars and work

shops which train olim to compete effectively inIsrael's job and housing markets. The academy is open to olim aged 21 to 35, whohave completed at least two years of higher ed-cuation. Olim from Western countries are eligible to receive financial assistance, in the form ofa loan, for the duration of the ulpan.

T h e k i b b u t 2 l i f e . . .The Bayit Rishon Bemoledet project was firststarted two years ago with the huge Russianaliyah, and it has proved most successful. Fourteen kibbutzim are participating in the SouthAfrican kibbutz project, most of whom haveSouth Africans in their communities. With the few initial financial outlays required, this project is particularly suitable for youngfamilies and those who wish to be out of the city.During the first six months olim will study Hebrew. Afterwards they may continue living on

Israel of 1994,with peace on the horizon, economic growthand a much improved quality of life, mustbe presented as a viable alternative."Moving from one country to another is apersonal decision. I don't tell others what todo with their lives. People must weigh thepersonal pro's and con's of such a move."But once people make a decision to movethen we have got to be seen and heard because the relative contribution they canmake to the state of Israel is far more important than to anyothercountry to which theyniay choose to go."

I believe that places likeRa'anana, Ashkelon and various kibbutzimwill provide a 'heimisha' atmosphere for thenew olim. I must emphasize that the kibbutzmovement's Bait Rishon Programme hasrallied enthusiastically to the cause of absorbing SA olim."Therefore I appeal to you with all my heart;'come home to Israel' and may we meet heres o o n . The boarding school programme caters for thesuccessful completion of high school. Some ofthe studies are in English and the exams, inHebrew, are made easier for new olim. Postscript from Jonathan Davis"South African Jewry is very fortunate to havean immigrant association - Telfed - that iswilling to initiate projects. They do not knowhow lucky they are, compared to olim fromother countries, when it comes to the care andassistance they receive on their arrival in Israel. The Jewish Agency has much respect forTelfed and the SAZF as promoters of aliyahand as absorbers of olim."

Thank you letters pour in

Keren Telfed Column

Telfed has received many thank you lettersfrom recipients of financial assistance throughour self-help fund, Keren Telfed. Lack of spacemeans we can publish only one of the manygratifying letters we have received:

Dear Telfed,There are no words to desribe the happiness andthe joy that my daughter experienced at her 1993s u m m e r c a m p .This is the kind of experience every child shouldgo through but unfortunately there are many thatn e v e r d o .

This letter is to thank you for giving her thechance to meet other children of her own age and

also to see a lot of the country. Most importantlyshe was taught how to swim properly. She came home with some interesting "artwork"and at the end of each day she would say (toquote her): "Mommy, I feel as though lam livingin a dream".My little girl is an only child who has neverknown what it is to grow up with a father, as myhusband passed away when she was only threemonths old. Despite this she is a lovely, happyand much loved little girl. Thanks to you she hadthe best summer holiday she has ever had.My only hope is that one day I will be able to dofor others what you have done for us. With thanksand appreciation.

Changes in foreignexchange regulationsA recent directive from the Bank of Israel nowenables a foreign resident who holds local securities or property to deposit income earned fromsuch assets in a foreign-deposit (patach) account- if the assets were properly acquired when theowner was not resident in Israel. Previously theforeign owner had to prove that the securities orreal estate were acquired from foreign-deposit

funds before being permitted to deposit suchincome in these (patach) accounts. It should be noted that this change relates onlyto revenue income and not to the amounts received on the sale of such assets. If seven years (previously 12) have elapsed sincethe date of purchase of the securites or property, and the owners have been resident outside Israelsince that time, then such assets will be treatedas having been acquired from foreign funds andthus freely transferable and free of most of theforeign exchange regulations.

Reporting foreign loansOn the receipt of a foreign loan, the lender isrequired by law to furnish its full particulars tothe bank, including a copy of the loan document or agreement. Until recently, such commercial bank was required to report on theseloans to the Bank of Israel where they exceeded $50 000. This limit has been increasedto $100 000 as of November 1 and includespostponement of the loan repayment. This isof particular relevance to local clients who haveforeign loans or may plan to obtain such loansin the future.

1 knew Aliza Hatchuel before I met her.For some time 1 had been hearing from friendsabout this marvellous Hebrew teacher at Ulpanclasses in Cape Town, and one day in the summer of 1987 Aliza and her husband Marvynmoved in next door to me, in Kfar Saba. From our first meeting I recognised the specialquality that shone out of her - sincerity. It wasapparent in the warmth of her smile, her genuineregard for people, herready hospitality and infect i o u s s e n s e o f h u m o u r .

Professionally she was the consummate teacher. Not only did she have that most enviable gift -the ability to convey learning to her pupils - she

also gave her students such a measure of love andcare that the sheer strength of her personalityovercame many learning difficulties. She rejoiced in their successes and comforted theirfailures, and everyone came away from a lessonencouraged and enthusiastic.A fast idious and meticulous home-maker, Al izawas a proud and loving mother to her daughters,Ruth and Dina, and a doting grandmother to herprecious grandsons who adored her. With deepest love and admiration for a womano f w o r t h .

Dress designer Lesley-Ann Wesseik's range ofwomen's clothing reflects her understanding ofwearable fashion and of the Israeli women's loveof clothes. "Listen in the bus and all the womenare talking about is clothes. They have a deeplove of fashion," she says. When Johannesburg born Lesley-Ann made ali-yah in 1981, she had already completed a dressdesigner's course at the Joubert Park TechnicalCollege and won a competition that had takenher to the Pret a 'Porter collection in Paris. In Israel she attended night classes at theShenkar College and then landed a job withOded Gera, and says: "I was determined to workfor the best designer."She also worked for various other companies andeventually stayed some time at a fashion factorymaking "eleganti" and "sport eleganti"clothing. She kept sane from the world of beads and dangles by completing a BA in English literature andcommunications through Unisa, learnt to work aword-processor, changed jobs and became a lawyer's secretary. She eventually felt ready to express her ownworld of fashion and luck was with her.Ra'anana Wizo heard about her and asked herto arrange a fund-raising fashion show forthem. This was followed by a similar show forKfar Sava Te l fed .Her style is a wearable-slim look with ankleskimming lengths, dress and coat emsembles,rib-knit and matching plain-knit slack suits, beaded waistcoat and princess line dresses.

Anglo-Saxon choir gets swingingTelfed's Anglo-Saxon classical choiris up and humming! With 25 singers, the choir, under the direction ofPnina IsserofT, comprises both newand highly experienced singers fromas fa r afie ld as Z i ch ron Yaacov in thenorth and Rehovot in the south.

Pnina, who is a graduate of both theRubin Academy in Jerusalem andthe Westminster Choir College inPrinceton, New Jersey, is thrilledwith the response."This has been my dream for years...to have a choir performing in English at a veryhigh standard. After our first half-hour of rehearsal, I could hear the incredible potential we have,"P n i n a s a i d .

However, despite the good initial response, thereare sti l l vacancies in the choir. There are fivemen, only one of whom is a baritone."We want to build this into the most excitingand important musical experience in Israel. AnEnglish choir has so much to offer and we lookforward to the time when we can meet in competition or harmony with Hebrew choirs."We intend performing mainly classical works;for example English composers like Elgar andVaughan Williams will feature strongly, but sowill works by other well-known classical composers. In addition, we intend performing Americanchoral work, folk songs, African folk melodiesand of course Hebrew songs.

Cry Freedom"I had an urgent letter to post and decided not towait until the following morning. I told RachelI'd be back in 25 minutes and off I went into thenight.I was dressed in shorts, a T-shirt and clogs. All Ihad in my hand was the letter. No heavy walkingstick. No fierce dog. No loaded gun.I might have been taking a midday stroll. I wasn'ttense nor on my guard even though I hadn'tl o c k e d t h e fl a t d o o r .

As I walked I thought... I hadn't done somethinglike this for perhaps 10 years in Johannesburg.Posting the letter was a liberating experience -one only a South African would understand.

Jock Falkson

Jock Falkson is a new oleh in Ra'anana.

"Whilst this is above all a classical choir, we'realso going to have fun and I have many ideas forsome really interesting and different material,"Pnina said. The choir is now in rehearsal for itsdebut concert planned for Purim. There is a wide variety of Anglo-Saxon accentsamongst the members - Americans, British,South Afr icans and Israel is are a l l not iceable. Each two-hour rehearsal starts with a half-hourvoice development and exercise session. SouthAfrican classical and Jazz pianist Derek Bernfieldis the accompanist. The manager is LarryB u t c h i n s .
