The pigeon breed of the Belgian long distance champion has been on a roll in recent seasons, with achievements that get your heart pumping: four national first prizes, a title of 1st National Ace Pigeon KBDB, first Olympiad Pigeon KBDB, two times 2nd General champion of Belgium KBDB, 2nd National Champion Long Distance KBDB, and so much more. This did not happen overnight of course. Joël Verschoot is a man with a plan, willing to bring sacrifices and willing to work very hard to reach his goal. He is passionate, and he is determined to win. However, you need to have the right tool for the job, and Joël knew that better than anyone. He sought and found what he needed to win races, and to become a nationally renowned player. In the end, he managed to become the number one in the national long distance in Belgium.

// PIGEON RACING IS ALL ABOUT WINNING Any fancier looking to play a meaningful role in our sport cannot do without pigeons with race winning potential. This is in fact much more important than having pigeons with a top of the line pedigree. Pedigrees do not win races. A pedigree only gets interesting if it includes true winners and ace pige-ons; pigeons that have shown to have an edge over their fellow pigeons, something that sets themselves

apart. They can get a fancier to create a name for himself, and they should be able to pass on their abilities to future generations. Joël Verschoot knew exactly what he needed in order to build a successful pigeon racing career: pigeons that win races, that stand out on race day, that break away from the main pack, and pigeons that claim victory in demanding conditions with strong headwinds.

Joël surrounded himself with a group of direct descendants of superstars and renowned first prize winners, focusing on their achievements in pigeon races rather than on the fanciers they come from. And that was the starting point of a remarkable success story of a self-made man, which climaxed in 2018.

// THE SELF-MADE STORY OF A SELF-MADE MAN.Joël Verschoot (62) is the prototype of a modern-day pigeon fancier, who leads by example. He was the youngest of a family of nine, and he quickly understood that working hard gets you far in life. It was something he learned at an early

age, and it was at that age that he also got introduced to our sport. His father Willem was in fact an excellent

sprint and middle distance fancier. When his father moved to an apartment, Joël stayed in the house of his parents, and he started to race in a combination with Willem, who helped take care of the pigeons. After his father’s passing Joël decided to take a different course: his four sons shared most of the workload, since Joël’s demanding day-time job kept him from spending a lot of time in the loft. His son Dieter eventually stayed on board, and he is now his father’s right-hand man.

It was around that time that Joël started to develop his own breed, focusing on the more demanding competitions, and the long distance

in particular. He wanted to breed pigeons that could win races in difficult conditions, and in strong headwinds. He turned to successful lofts

from around the area, and his first successful investment was a pair of summer youngsters from the best breeding pair of Georges Lidou from Ichtegem, which can still be found in many of his best pigeons today; supercrack Armando, the best long distance pigeon of all times, is a telling example. Joël also fared well with descendants of the 1st Nat. Brive of Robbert Dobbelaere from the nearby town of Make, and with pigeons of Marc Van den Eeckhout from Kalken. He also introduced pigeons from other renowned players from around the neighbourhood, including the golden Gaby Vandenabeele bloodline. At the very core of this pigeon breed is a group of descendants of super class birds and race winners. And these pigeons have in turn enabled Joël Verschoot to become a highly succes-sful fancier himself.

Joël Verschoot did it his own way, developing a pigeon breed centered around pigeons with great potential, and pigeons that do not shy away from a hard day’s work. The key to success for the fancier from Ingelmunster has been a combination of racing often, working hard, producing top level performances and a strict selection process. He adopts a demanding approach that clearly

appears to pay off. Joël sums it up perfectly:Head to the basketing club every single week, and make sure to go all in. You will learn about the real-world value of your pigeons soon enough: you will not get far without talented birds and race winners, and you will get bankrupt sooner than you think. You should only keep the pigeons that will at least pay you back your stake. That way, you are

eventually left with only your most potent birds. And we have nothing to add to that! It was thanks to

this approach that Joël managed to become a nationally renowned player.

// STEEP RISE TO THE TOPThe way in which Joël Verschoot has developed into a nationally renowned player in Belgium is nothing short of impressive. He started working night shifts in 2010: he earns a living at night, to be able to work in his loft during the day. The results of this career switch showed fairly quickly, with a considerable boost in performance. The Verschoot pigeons gradually began to earn their place among the leading national long distance breeds, and they started winning prominent titles:

decided to take a different course”

The fantastic 2013 season was his first record-breaking year. Looking back, it was a season that hinted at what was to follow in the next five seasons: the Verschoot pigeons were clearly determined to raise the bar even further. They won the title of 2nd General Champion of Belgium KBDB 2013 - for the second time in three years - and they claimed not one but two national first prizes, from Bordeaux-Agen and from Brive, with racing birds Agen and Cees respectively. Meanwhile, the fantastic Annelies claimed a 2nd Nat. La Souterraine. Joël decided not to sell his two national first prize winners; they were both transferred to the breeding loft, where they formed a solid foundation for the future!

2nd General Champion of Belgium KBDB in 20131st National Brive 2013 with Cees1st National Bordeaux-Agen 2013 with Agen2nd National La Souterraine with Annelies

This palmares clearly indicates that the Verschoot pigeons were naturally good at winning top prizes. Joël Verschoot started winning top prizes in the national championships KBDB on a regular basis as well, and his team continued to deliver in the following seasons:

8th National Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB in 20149th National Champion LD olds KBDB in 20147th National Champion LD Yearlings KBDB in 2015 14th National Champion Extreme LD KBDB in 20151st Provincial Jarnac 867 YLs in 2015 1st Provincial Tulle 1,306 YLs in 2015

We did notice that the breeding line of ‘As’ has played a crucial role in the many top results that were being won in quick succession.

// THE WORLD CLASS BLOODLINE OF AS: THE GATEWAY TO 4 NATIONAL FIRST PRIZESBeing successful in pigeon racing often comes down to the details, although many renowned lofts rely first of all on an excellent pigeon family. Pigeons that combine excellent racing abilities with superior breeding potential are a rare breed. One of the most prominent stock breeders in the team of Joël Verschoot is As BE04-3176837. He comes from a crossing of the Georges Lidou breed with pigeons of Gaby Vandenabeele and Rudi De Saer. The dam of As (BE02-3016427) was bred from a full sister of ’t Goedje BE05-3177035, which is Rudi De Saer’s stock breeder today (the dam of Bleken, Tours, and 1st National winners New Tours and Antonio). This is unlikely to be a coincidence!

De As developed into the superstar of the Verschoot breeding lofts, where he became the sire of a number of highly talented racing and breeding birds:

- Harry: 8th Nat. Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB 2014 - As 1: the sire of super class hen Femke, and the grandfather of Jip and Eddy - As 2: the sire of Betsie- Dochter As 428/10: the dam of Agen, winner of a 1st Nat. Agen in 2013- Aske 1: the dam of Cees, winner of a 1st Nat. Brive in 2013- Eva: the dam of Noë, winner of a 1st Prov. Tulle in 2015- Aske 3: the grandmother of Noë, winner of a 1st Prov. Tulle in 2015- Aske 2: the dam of Suzanne, winner of a 1st Nat. Pau 2016

And the big star of this loft today also stems from the same bloodline that bred As: - Armando: 1st Olympiad Pigeon KBDB Cat B – Poznan 2019, 1st National Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB 2018, 1st Nat. Angoulême 2018, 2nd Nat. Limoges 2018, 2nd Nat. Limoges 2017. The best long distance pigeon of all times! Top class breeding hen Luna (the dam of Armando) is a grandchild of stock breeder Lidou 5 x Daughter Max, just like As. Max (himself 1st Ace Pigeon Long Distance Club and 2nd Ace Pigeon Long Distance Belgische Duivensport) is the great-grandfather of Luna, As and Pycasso (the sire of Armando). Good blood never lies!

To give you an idea of the sheer strength of the As bloodline, we would like to ask yourself the following two questions:-how many fanciers - including the big guns - have managed to win four first prizes over the course of their entire long distance career? Joël Verschoot achieved this in just five years’ time, between 2013 and 2018.-how many fanciers can say that they will start the 2019 season with four national first prize winners (long distance), a 1st Natio-nal Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB and a 1st Olympiad Pigeon Long Distance in their loft, keeping

in mind all prizes were won here at home? We can think of just one: Joël Verschoot!

// AN UNSTOPPABLE SUCCESS TRAIN The successful As bloodline has served Joël Verschoot well: they enabled him to become a national and international star in no time, and he continued to deliver in what turned out to be a brilliant 2016 season, which saw him add another national first prize to his already impressive list of achievements.

We take a look back at some of his best results of 2016:

1st Nat. Pau 2016 – 1,661 p. with Suzanne1st Best Yearling of Belgium 2016- 3 national long distance races with Jip3rd National Ace Pigeon Long Distance Yearlings KBDB 2016, with Jip1st General Champion Inter-West Flemish 20161st General Champion Rekkem 2016 (forthefifthtimeinsixyears)1st Provincial Chateauroux III of 2,791 young birds 2016

It proved the overture for an apotheosis that was to follow in 2017 and 2018.

// EXCEPTIONAL LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE REACHES A CLIMAX IN 2017 AND 2018And then came the 2017 season, the year in which many records were broken. It was the year when Joël Verschoot was considered the big superstar of 2017 in the national long distance in Belgium. Until a few years back, the National Championship Long Distance KBDB was decided by the best three results with your first two nominated birds in the national long distance races. No other fancier has achieved such a low coefficient across these three races as Joël Verschoot in 2017. Here are the results:

9 + 10 Nat. Brive 9,132 olds2 + 16 Nat. Limoges II 9,162 olds4 + 17 Nat. Jarnac 5,134 olds

Each of these prizes was won with his first and second nominated. It was a record performance, and a unique feat. These results would make him the national number one in the long distance any day, and by a long margin. Unfortunately for Joël, the criteria were changed in recent

years, going from three to four races. Sadly enough, his first nominated only just fell short of a top result to make Joël the national number one across four races. It is the only title that is lacking on an otherwise overwhelming list of achievements in 2017. Here is a closer look:

Meanwhile, such champions as Armando, Nopri, Barry and Contador really stepped up, and they started to deliver great results in the national long distance week after week. The headlines in pigeon racing media leaves no doubt about the scope of these achievements:Joël Verschoot divides and conquers with the world class birds as his superior As bloodline, a family of talented racing birds that has bred several national winners.

// THEIR CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT: A 1ST AND 2ND NATIONAL ANGOULÊME AND 15 PIGEONS IN THE NATIONAL TOP 100And then came the record breaking 2018 season. It was a demanding racing season, marked by strong headwinds almost on a weekly basis, and sun-drenched weather with unusually high temperatures often exceeding 30 degrees. And this is exactly the type of weather which the Joël Verschoot pigeons thrive in. These are the conditions in which they can put their many talents to good use. They have the strength that is needed to set themselves apart. It resulted in a long series of national top 100 results.

The absolute highlight in this success story came in the closing long distance race of 2018 from Angoulême (a distance of 641km to Ingelmunster). It would be the icing on the cake. The Verschoot pigeon breed was really on top of their game now, and they were in contention for the title of National Champion Long Distance KBDB and National

Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB, as well as for an Olympiad title. They would not settle for less, and it was a very exciting period for the team.

Just like last year, the Verschoot pigeons were in great form

throughout the 2018 season, and they enjoyed their favourite racing conditions: tough weather and demanding races. No other pigeon breed is quite as strong as this one when the pigeons are really put to the test. They are naturally born winners in races of 600 to 850km. This is the type of breed than can excel, dominate and take the win in the most taxing conditions, and they demonstrated their potential in the national race from Angoulême, where they scored a fantastic result overall. It was quite a miracle.

The first pigeon to win a top prize, and to contribute to a fabulous overall team performance, was the one year old that claimed a 2nd National in his category. He arrived home at 5:07 pm. Nine minutes later all hell broke loose, with three old birds arriving home within two minutes, including the team’s two superstars Armando and Contador, followed by the 2nd and 1st nominated, which were both two year olds. They win a 1st, 3rd, 4th and 35th National respectively - a fantastic result! This team was clocking one pigeon after another, while other fanciers were still eagerly awaiting the arrival of their first bird. Team Verschoot had an impressive 7 old birds (on 19 basketed pigeons) and 8 yearlings (on a total of 26) in the national top 100!

Joël claimed his fourth national victory in five years’ time with Armando, and this victory gave way to a title of 1st National Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB 2018, with a record coefficient of 0.2396%. On top of that, Armando is also 1st Olympiad Pigeon of Belgium Cat. C KBDB in Poznan 2018. It doesn’t get any better!

We take a look at the individual results that led to his incredible overall achievement, with the following prizes won at club level of 170 old birds: 1-2-3-8-11-16-17 etc., and of 167 yearlings: 1-4-5-6-8-12-13-14… Here are the national results:

This is of course the result of a pigeon breed in top form and a proficient fancier. The 2018 season was another major success for the team from Ingelmunster; the following prizes were won this year:

// ARMANDO: THE BEST LONG DISTANCE PIGEON OF ALL TIMESClaiming a national first prize is any long distance fancier’s dream. And to claim this coveted victory with the star of the team, with your absolute champion, makes it even better. Armando started with a bronze medal in 2017, as 3rd National Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB.

This year he settled for nothing less than gold, winning the title of 1st National Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB, as well as that of 1st Olympiad Pigeon of Belgium Long Distance KBDB Cat. B – Poznan 2019. It makes Armando the best long distance pigeon of all times – not just because of these titles but also because of his fantastic results and his display of strength: he wins two national 2nd prizes from Limoges (in 2017 and 2018) and now a coveted 1st National Angoulême. Let’s have a look at the fabulous list of achieve-ments of one of the greatest racing birds of all times:

Armando was not an oddity in the lofts in Ingelmunster:

his teammate Contador was often on his heels, trying to get the better of him. His list of achievements is almost just as impressive, with no less than four prizes in the national top ten. Let’s have a look at his remarkable palmares:

Barry (a full brother of Armando), Nopri, and quite a few other very promising birds have contributed to the level of dominance that was displayed by the modern-day Verschoot pigeon in recent seasons. They were pretty much outstanding, and at times impossible to beat.

// JOËL AND DIETER VERSCHOOT: THE GREATEST IN THE LONG DISTANCE IN 2017 & 2018You will never hear Joël and Dieter Verschoot boast about the fact that they gradually developed into Belgium’s leading long distance team over the past two to three seasons. We do applaud their honesty, although we reckon they will be very proud of their pigeon racing careers so far, and of their achievements in our sport. It is that ultimate

kick that makes them race pigeons. This is why they continue to make sacrifices, in their private lives as well as in their professional lives. They have been working really hard, and their efforts clearly paid off in the long run. They are now reaping the rewards.

Joël and Dieter Verschoot were considered one of the, if not the best long distance team in Belgium already in 2017. However, they were still waiting for the icing on the cake: they failed to claim a prestigious title that was in line with their reputation. They settled this matter in 2018, and both the fanciers and the pigeons delivered at exactly the right moment, which is an art in itself. The crowning achievement came in the form of a fabulous result from Angoulême – the culmination of a fantastic career. And they did it with the ‘best long distance pigeon of all times’ in Belgium, and perhaps worldwide! It takes a fantastic fancier, a great champion, to pull this off.

In his last race of his career “Armando” won 1. National Angoulème. It is impressive which other toppigeons he beatsinthisfinalrace.Belowanoverviewofthemainbirds in the top 15 National.

1. National => Joel Verschoot, Armando3. National => Joel Verschoot, Contador (see page 20)4. National => Joel Verschoot, Ikker (see page 50)8. National => Platteeuw Kurt & Raf - 9. Nat. The top 10 national for Limoges II 2017 was spread all over Belgium. Armando beats both 1. & 2. National Ace KBDB Long Distance 2017 in this race:

2. National => Joel Verschoot, Armando5. National => Karel Sarrazin - 2. Nat. Ace KBDB Long Distance 20179. National => Daniel Bucaciuc - “Mr. Expensive” 1. Nat. Ace KBDB Long Distance 2017

Limoges II 2018 was an honest and hard race with again several topbirds and topfanciers in the top of the national result.

1. National => Demely Liliane - 1. Best long distance pigeon of Belgium over 2 races 20182. National => Joel Verschoot, Armando

Brive 2017 was a hard race with almost 10 hours on the wing for the winning pigeons. Some super pigeons in this top 10 National

1. National => Team De Jaeger - Super bird “Mariano”4. National => Sierens Norbert - 4. Best long distance pigeon of Belgium over 2 races 20176. “After the 2017 season, in which Armando claimed the title of 3rd National Ace Pigeon KBDB long distance, many would have opted to put an end to Armando’s racing career and to move him to the breeding loft instead. He had proven his worth and he had clearly earned his place in the breeding loft. However, it had always been my goal to win a title of 1st National Ace Pigeon long distance KBDB one day, which to me is the most prestigious title in Belgium. So I decided to continue racing him for the 2018 season. Many champions called me crazy: Gaby Vandenabeele advised against racing such a talented bird, and Gino Clicque could not believe I had not moved him to the breeding loft right away. But I decided to go my own way, because I was not scared of losing Armando. I had in fact quite a selection of talented racing birds at the ready: I would still be left with five or six potential race winners for 2018 even if I lost Armando. I am very proud that Armando really gave everything he had in the closing race of his career: he won a 1st National Angoulème. It was the third top result that was needed to win the coveted title of 1st National Ace Pigeon KBDB long distance 2018, which he took with the lowest coefficient ever. It was also the sixth top result that was needed to earn a selection for the Poland Olympiad, as 1st Olympiad Pigeon - again with an exceptional coefficient.”

“I have always had great confidence in Contador; this is a pigeon you can always count on. I could tell with almost total certainty when he was up for a great result solely based on how he would behave before a race. Before basketing him for Libourne 2018, I could tell from the way he trained, his self-confidence in his box and his overall attitude that he would do something special in a few days’ time. I also knew that he tends to get his best results towards the latter half of the season, and so I was confident enough to basket him as my first nominated. We saw Contador come home like a bullet, and he was momentarily the first pigeon to arrive home at national level, before eventually settling for sixth place national from Libourne.”

“I think Nopri could best be described as a bird that likes to play around. He was always full of energy, even after a demanding race. Even the hardest races appeared to be a walk in the park for him, as he was still playful and energetic afterwards. He is a combination of two of my best lines. His first grandfather is my stock breeder As, his second grandfather is super class breeder Deprez, which is also the sire of Contador and others.”

Despite their young age, I can honestly say that Brauwer x Twistertje is the best breeding pair I have ever come across. It was with a heavy heart that I decided to sell this pair, because I am well aware of their enormous potential. I think it is important to give a bit of a background about this pair.

Twistertje was a racing hen that did really well. I let her pick a partner herself in the widower loft, and she went with Brauwer. So Brauwer was initially the widower cock of Twistertje. I paired my racing birds prior to the 2015 season, so I put Brauwer x Twistertje together. They bred one pair of youngsters in 2015, and one of them was JIP, 3rd National Ace Pigeon long distance yearlings 2016 and best long distance pigeon of Belgium over three races in 2016.

In the spring of 2016, before JIP’s rise to the top, I bred just one pair of youngsters from my racing birds, like I did every year. These would be used for the racing loft. One of the youngsters of this spring pair was top class racing bird Eddy, which won a 1st Provincial Chateauroux as a young bird in the last race of the season. And it was then that I realized the potential of this pair.

I discovered the two full brothers JIP and then Eddy in just a few weeks’ time, bearing in mind I had only bred two pairs of youngsters from Brauwer x Twistertje at the time. I decided to move Twistertje to the breeding lofts, together with Brauwer of course. As always, I bred two rounds of youngsters from my breeding birds in 2017, to be used in the racing loft. And you’ve guessed it: in each of the two pairs of youngsters I discovered a very talented pigeon: Magic & Ivo.

Magic was the 4th best pigeon of Belgium over three long distance races as a yearling in 2018, and Ivo won a national top 35 prize twice in 2018. And there is more: I also bred one pair of youngsters from Eddy in the spring of 2017, and one of them was a talented racing bird as well: Agent. I went on to breed two more pairs of youngsters from Brauwer x Twisterje in 2018, and once again I ended up with two promising racing birds, which have already shown their potential on a number of occasions. The conclusion is that I have not bred a single pair of youngsters from Brauwer x Twistertje without one of them turning out to be a top quality pigeon.

Anyone who knows me will agree that I do not tend to boast about my achieve-ments. However, in all modesty, I dare say that this is probably one of the best breeding pairs ever to have been offered for sale at such a young age. I am convinced that the new owner of this pair will have many great results with their descendants for years to come.
