Despite losing in the first round of the Kingsmill fall ten- nis tournament, the FHS boys tennis team still received a special award. On Saturday, October 18th, FHS boys ten- nis coach, Frank Davis, was presented a collection of ten- nis racquets from Kingsmill Resort tennis pro and director of the fall tennis tournament, Muri Ajibade. Abijade stated, Kingsmill and the residents of Kingsmill were proud to pre- sent these racquets to the student athletes of Franklin High School. We are commit- ted in promoting the sport that we love and hope that these racquets will benefit in the growth of tennis in the Franklin community. The racquets are to be used by the boys tennis team. Franklin High School Students in Mrs. Gray’s second block public speaking class are practicing demonstration speeches. Examples of topics include the following: How to Create a Stylish Summertime Flip-flop, How to Take Care of Curly Hair, and How to Take a Selfie. Congratulations to Ms. Britt’s fourth block Algebra Readiness class and Mr. Yarber’s second block Algebra II class, winners of the weekly math competition. Ms. Britt’s class earned the high-est percentage on test scores and Mr. Yarber’s class had the most improved percentage for the week of October 13th– 17th. Both classes received a trophy and snacks in recognition of their accomplishments. The purpose of the weekly math competition is to encourage good study habits in preparation for the SOL math-ematics tests.

Franklin High School’s Nurse, Sharon Whitehead shares her Bootiful Bones dis-play with students. The dis-play contained facts and trivia about bones, as well as how to make bones strong. Stu-dents were amazed to find out different facts relating to the human skeletal system.

On Thursday, October 23rd, the Franklin High School Drama club per-formed “Cave Dreams” for students and staff. The Drama club, also, per-formed at J.P. King Jr. Middle School for the eight graders. Both per-formances were a success and received great reviews from those in attendance. Drama club coaches are Jennifer Miguel, English teacher and Teri Zurfluh, volunteer.

The Franklin High School Spanish club put together a celebration for Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, on Wednes-day October 29th. This traditional Mex-ican holiday celebrates the life of past loved ones and is often spent with fami-ly and friends. The club put together a traditional alter for students' lost family and friends and held a fun-filled event in the cafeteria. There was food, music, face paintings, games, and more!

Student and Teacher of the Month for October Rosemary Idisi was recognized as student of the month for being a responsible young lady. Idisi displays responsibility by participating in a number of activities and clubs, while managing to stay on top of her studies.

Even though Jessica Kerr is new to FHS, it has not interfered with her ability to engage her students. Kerr is always on her feet teaching while her students are actively participating. Ms. Kerr is well deserv-ing of the Teacher of the Month recognition.

Despite losing to Southampton High School on Friday, November 7th, there is still an opportunity for the Broncos to make it to the State Championship game. The football team will travel to Surry on Friday, November 14th, to take on the Cougars in the first round of the VHSL football playoffs.
