NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANAND

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, in a bold slashto save the people of that beautiful State, has said ‘NO’to booze in that small bit of paradise on earth, telling thebooze sellers that his government can survive without thedirty money of 8000 crores as revenue from the sale of thispoison, showing the way for spirited living which could incourse of time turn spiritual when every household will beawash with the spirit of Onam, good old Mahabali ‘sfestival of annual visit, due this year on September 7.

Mahabali, in his annual report to his hosts in heaven, used to express sorrow at the boozy life of that State whichperhaps is why Oommen has tried to phase out thispoison, for which act of bravery, Mody, the bold, shouldpropose Oommen for the Bharat Ratna, the only one

deserving it from Kerala apart from another guy calledSadanand who has no sponsers. God’s Own Country cansustain a couple of awardees.

In 1945when, in search of pastures anew, my motherdecided to shift from Kannur in Kerala to Madrasfor ourbetter education, we rented a house on Pycrofts road inTriplicane unaware of the character of the neighbourhood.Only when the nose and ears were blasted by the stenchof liquor and brawls in a liqour shop nearby did we feel thatwe had foolishly fallen from the pan into the fire. Mahabalihad probably the same experience when he was rulingKerala and welcomed his execution by a Godly decree.

After suffering for some months, we shifted toRoyapettah where there were no booze shops.

Many years later when my family shifted back toKannur after my father’s retirement, our house, less thana kilometer from the mighty Central Jail, used to give usthe creeps at dawn when they hanged the killers who hadperhaps been drunk when they killed others.

That experience is the genesis for my horror of deathpenalty. That is why Oommen, the abolisher of booze salein Kerala, gets my Kalinga award.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, - You had reported in your issues dated July 20-26,2013 and August 7-13, 2010 that a huge pit dug forconstruction work at 158, G. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar(opposite Saravana Furniture & Appliances) had turnedinto a pond which had become a breeding ground formosquitoes following rain. Residents told Mambalam Timesthat Corporation workers are not spraying pesticides onthe surface of the water to prevent mosquitoes breeding.Even after four years, the situation is still the same and noaction has been taken by the owners to either completeconstruction or fill the pit.- R. Balasubramanian, 11, OldNo.6, 1st floor, Ramachandra Road, Pondy Bazaar, T.Nagar, Ph: 2815 0338

Appeal to shift post boxSir, There is a post box on the sidewalk near R-4 Police

Station (Thyagaraya Road, near Panagal Park, T. Nagar). To reach it, one has to cross the busy road risking speedingvehicles from both sides. This is more dangerous for seniorcitizens like me. There is no other post box within walkingdistance. I appeal to the postal authorities to shift the postbox to a spot near Corporation School on the northern sideat the junction of G.N. Chetty Road. - S. Rajagopalan, 6Anandam Street, T. Nagar

Not received Aadhar cardSir, My wife and I enrolled for Aadhaar card on Sept. 19,

2013 after undergoing the usual hassles like waiting forlong hours etc. The enrolment number for me is 1183/61012/04896 and for my wife B. Saroja 1183/61012/04897.

When we did not receive the Aadhaar card or anycommunication from the authorities concerned, I took upthe matter with Director of Census Operations / NationalPopulation Registrar Office in Chennai. They said that ourapplications had been rejected for reasons known only tothem.

However, my wife later received her Aadhaar cardnumber but the card is still awaited. I am yet to get anyinformation from the authorities concerned about the fateof my application. - T. V. Bashyam, Rangashree Apts.,3/1A, Manickam Street, West Mambalam. Ph: 9787663138.
