SAFETY INFORMATION

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC),with its action in General Docket 79-144, March 13,1985, has adopted a safety standard for the humanexposure to radio frequency (RF) electromagneticenergy emitted by FCC regulated equipment. Properoperation of this radio will result in user exposure farbelow the Occupational Safety and Health Act andFederal Communication Commission limits.

DO NOT hold the radio in such a manner that theantenna is close to, or touching, exposed parts of thebody -- especially the eyes or face --while the radio istransmitting.

DO NOT operate the radio near unshielded electricalblasting caps or in an explosive atmosphere, unless it isa type specifically designed and qualified for such use.

DO NOT operate the radio unless the antennaconnector is secure and any open connectors areproperly terminated.

DO NOT allow children to operate transmitter-equipped radio equipment.

This device complies with Part 15 of the FCCrules. Operation is subject to the condition that thisdevice does not cause harmful interference.

BATTERY CHARGING AND CARE

Do not dispose of the battery pack in fire - it mayexplode, causing injury or death.

Do not replace the battery in hazardous atmospherelocations.

Do not carry battery loose in your pocket or purse.

Do not attempt to repair battery.

The product you have purchasedcontains a rechargeable battery. Thebattery is recyclable. At the end of itsuseful life under various state and locallaws it may be illegal to dispose of thisbattery into the municipal waste stream.Check with your local solid waste officialsfor details concerning recycling options or

proper disposal in your area. Call Toll Free 1-800-8-BATTERY for information and/or procedures forreturning rechargeable batteries in your state.

Your radio comes supplied with one 7.5 volt 1100mAh Ni-Cd battery pack, which can be recharged from500 to 1000 times before requiring replacement. Theactual number of charge / recharge cycles varydepending upon usage. We recommend that the battery

g

8

be charged 14 to 16 hours on the first charge cycle andthen in accordance with the charger model instructionsthereafter.

To remove the battery pack, push up on the batterylatch and slide the battery pack to the right. To replacethe battery, align the battery on the track and slide to theleft until a click is heard, indicating the battery is correctlyinstalled.

If the battery is to be charged on the radio, ensurethat the power switch on the radio is in the off positionbefore charging. Failing to turn the power switch to offduring the charge cycle will result in a less than fullcharge condition, which will noticeably reduce theoperating time between charges!

Normal battery operation time is 8 hours. This mayvary depending upon how much the receiver audio ispresent and how much you transmit. The actual timemay vary from day to day depending upon operationalrequirements.

FOR BEST PERFORMANCE

1. Charge battery to full capacity, 14 hours at thestandard C/10 rate (capacity X .10). For "rapid"chargers, allow additional time (2-3 hours) for"topping off" the charge after it switches from "fast"to "slow".

2. Use the battery soon and use as much of the batterycapacity as possible or practical. A battery that ischarged and discharged completely will maintain the

Page 9: LZT-1875R1A - MONOGRAM SERIES EDACS TRUNKING PORTABLE · This manual covers Ericsson and General Electric products manufactured and sold by Ericsson Inc. NOTICE! Repairs to this equipment

9

longest running time capacity. Also, severalcharge/discharge cycles are recommended to bringa new battery up to its rated capacity.

3. Store and charge the batteries at room temperature65°F to 75°F. Batteries that have been stored forover a month should be recharged before putting intoservice due to chemical self-discharge which occursat a rate of approximately 1% per day. Do not chargecold batteries (40°F or below).

4. Reduced capacity or "memory effect" may resultfrom repeated identical shallow discharge/fullrecharge cycles. If such a condition is suspected, runthe battery until the instrumentation loses all power, then fully recharge and discharge again. Repeat thiscycle 3-4 times.

EXTENDED OPERATIONS

When operating in "Fringe Areas" at some distancefrom the System, the other party may not receive yourtransmission clearly. Also you may notice that thebackground noise will increase on received signals.Moving to higher ground or moving closer to the Systemwill help alleviate these problems. If moving closer to theSystem is not practical, communication may be improvedby moving away from shielding structures. If you are in abuilding interior, move closer to a window (preferably onegenerally in the direction of the System). At 800 MHz thewave length is very short, sometimes moving a fewinches to a few feet can make significant signal strengthchanges. Finding the best location can also be done

Page 10: LZT-1875R1A - MONOGRAM SERIES EDACS TRUNKING PORTABLE · This manual covers Ericsson and General Electric products manufactured and sold by Ericsson Inc. NOTICE! Repairs to this equipment

10

while listening to the background noise while movingabout; attempt to find a spot where the background noiseis reduced to a minimum or eliminated entirely. This maymake the difference from not being heard, to being heardloud and clear when operating in the fringe areas of yourSystem coverage.

The fringe distance will vary greatly from plainsareas, hilly terrain and mountain top sites.

FCC LICENSING

This unit may or may not require a specific FCClicense to operate. The FCC requires all transmitters inthe conventional and some Trunked Systems to belicensed by the Federal Communications Commission. Some Trunked operations now are exempt fromindividual licensing requirements but must be operated ina licensed System.

Consult your dealer regarding specific licensinginformation, or contact the Federal CommunicationsCommission.

For more information regarding the FCC licenseapplication (Form 571), call 717-337-1212 for additionalinformation or contact the FCC District Office nearestyour location.

Page 11: LZT-1875R1A - MONOGRAM SERIES EDACS TRUNKING PORTABLE · This manual covers Ericsson and General Electric products manufactured and sold by Ericsson Inc. NOTICE! Repairs to this equipment

11

adjustments may result in illegal emissions, including off-frequency operation, or damage to the radio.

Should an UNLOCK condition be shown in the LCDdisplay, or the LCD fail to display information, or all iconsand display segments are shown, turn theON/OFF/VOLUME control OFF then ON to reset themicroprocessor. Ensure that the battery is fully chargedand check that the antenna is securely tightened.

Out of Range/System

EDACS - A single pitched tone willsound immediately after the PTTswitch is keyed indicating the radio isout of range of the repeater. Theradio tries to place the call for a shortperiod (3 seconds) after the initialattempt. The radio generates asecond low pitched tone when itgives up trying to place the call. Thesystem is off the air or the radioneeds servicing when the radio iswithin calling rage, and these tonesare heard.

GE-MARC - Five beeps will soundshortly after the PTT switch is keyedwhen the radio is out of range of therepeater or the radio is inoperative. If the “Call Retry” is active, the radiowill try the channel at twenty secondintervals for five minutes.
