Another Loss for Lyttelton Recreation and Community Centre - Closed
The Lyttelton Recreation Centre, consisting of two adjoining buildings – a community centre built in 1963 and a recreation
centre built in 1984; was closed down today pending more structural assessments.
After completing a detailed engineering evaluation of the Lyttelton Recreation Centre, structural engineers have
recommended that the centre should close, and that the facility will need to be earthquake strengthened before reopening.
Engineers conducted a Level Two Rapid Assessment of the building after the 22 February earthquake and it received a green
sticker. The Level Two Rapid Assessment is a visual inspection of the inside and outside of the building to identify any
obvious structural damage.
However, the latest assessment is a more detailed evaluation of the building, including an estimation of its capacity to
withstand future earthquakes. It is part of an ongoing process being carried out by the Christchurch City Council to
proactively ensure all its facilities undergo full engineering reviews after the earthquakes.
Christchurch City Council Community Services General Manager, Michael Aitken, says the Council is conscious that the
closure will cause inconvenience for members of the community who use the facility or who have upcoming events booked.
“However, the safety of people using the facility is our priority and we must ensure residents are not put at risk in the event
of future earthquakes,” he says.
Currently the Recreation Centre is used for a range of community events including: Plunket Play Group; Pre-School Music
Box; Tumble Times; Toy Library; Karate; Pilates; Belly Dancing; Dance Classes; Tai Chi; Recreational Gymnastics; Yoga;
Jiu Jitsu; Seniors Fitness; not to mention Council, community group meetings and acting as Lyttelton’s Civil Defence Centre.
Pressure for community space in Lyttelton is evident and we are in dire need of solutions. If you can offer some alternative
options for space for Lyttelton community groups to use, please contact us at the Lyttelton Harbour Information Centre so
that we can create an availability list of space for hire.

Lyttelton’s 161st Anniversary Commemoration of the Pilgrims’ Landing
On 16th December, Canterbury Anniversary Day, a commemoration gathering to celebrate
the 161st anniversary of the Pilgrims' landing will be held at "The Rock" in Norwich Quay at
10.00am. It was at 10.00am on the 16th December 1850 the "Charlotte Jane" arrived in
Lyttelton Harbour after having been at sea for ninety nine days, having left Plymouth, England
on 7th September that year.
Shortly after their arrival the first passengers disembarked to come ashore within the vicinity
of "The Rock" where they were met by Mr John Robert Godley, the Founder of the Canterbury
Province and Governor Sir George Grey and Lady Grey, who had come down especially from
Wellington for the occasion. The second ship the "Randolph" arrived later that day at 3.30pm,
followed by the "Cressy" and the next day the "Sir George Seymour".
Although Canterbury does not officially recognise the arrival as a holiday, the date being too
close to Christmas, it is important that the Canterbury Pilgrims and Early Settlers Association
has the support of the locals on that day. It is hoped to have the Pilgrims' flag flying on the
Museum flag pole, the presence of the Mayor, Bob Parker and possibly three local people who
instigated the removal of "The Rock" which was originally below the old post office building
and had to be repositioned to it's present day site. Mrs Beverly Bolland, President of the Asso-
ciation, will address the gathering assisted by Reverend Neil Struthers, who will give the final
blessing.
Locals usually notice women on Lyttelton streets in heritage costumes and sometimes the bell
of " Holy Trinity" has been rung at 10am to signify the importance of the arrival of the first
ship. This year, unfortunately, that tradition will have to wait for a future time!

Lyttelton Community House Getting to the Heart of Our Community
In Lyttelton we are fortunate to have so many active
people trying to make a difference. Christine Wilson
is one of them, and is currently the Manager of
Lyttelton Community House and the Lyttelton
Harbour Basin Youth Council. You don’t see her
around too much because most of the time she is in
her Dublin Street office managing these two vital
organisations.
Over the last three to four years Christine, her staff
and volunteer boards have totally transformed the
Youth Centre, and have created Lyttelton
Community House from scratch. They have done an
amazing job. During this difficult year just keeping
both centres open has been a major achievement. And on top of that they have developed a
new food programme, cooking for Lyttelton elderly five nights per week. This is only just
scaling down now. “That has been a terrific locally led earthquake response and a major
achievement”, Christine said.
They are also the proud owners of a community bus. “That is opening up more possibilities and
now our youth outreach now includes Governors Bay”, Christine said. This wasn’t possible in
the past. Partnerships are also developing with Diamond Harbour youth. Hot off the press
Christine says “We are now offering a shoppers bus every Wednesday afternoon at 1.30pm”.
Christine has a lifetime of experience in our beautiful town. Born in Cressy House and apart
from a couple of years in Christchurch has lived in Lyttelton all her life. She tells me snippets of
her life. At age 16, “My first job was down at the wharf working in the Waterside Workers
Canteen where 1,000 men a day used to eat lunch down there’, she said.
Over the years she’s done a variety of things but everything focuses on people. Her proudest
job is being a mother and now grandmother. “I have three sons and eleven grandchildren” she
tells me proudly. Many of you will know that two of Christine’s sons were All Blacks and within
her immediate family are four All Blacks. Talking briefly about the Rugby World Cup and rugby
in her life, “This year I was just pleased to be able to watch it on television and it was all really
low key” she said. “Over the years the sport has given her loads of enjoyment and the
opportunities and friendships developed are really special to her.
Like most of us, learning about our past is also important to Christine. She has a special
connection to the Pacific Islands. Her mother was Tahitian but spent many years living in
Rarotonga. Christine has made many journeys back, and is currently doing an ancestral studies
course and linking her past to Maori. “Do you know that Tamatea was a commander of one of
the seven canoes that brought Maori to New Zealand” she said. That’s the ancestral link she
has to New Zealand. This links her well to Rapaki. In Maori whakapapa Tamatea is their local
mountain.
This ancestral linkage ensures Christine is very interested in Maori issues for our harbour. At
her role at Community House and working with Rodney Rutledge they started to tell the story
of Parehaka. Each year Christine organises a memorial service at the Lyttelton Gaol to
commemorate this. Whilst a tragic part of New Zealand’s history it is great that the
Community House has been able to help tell this story and link our current generation with this
important New Zealand event and the significance for the peace movement worldwide.
If you’d like more information about the services for Lyttelton Community House or the
Lyttelton Harbour Basin Youth Council visit Christine and the friendly team at 7 Dublin Street.
Community House is open from 10am -2pm Monday to Friday and the Youth Centre is open
each day from 3pm. Phone 741 1427 or email: [email protected].

Lyttel Piko, Big Changes Community Owned Co-Operative
This last year has been a year of immense change for all of us. Even for the very lucky shops
such as ours who sustained minimal physical damage it has been a year of extraordinary
challenges on several different levels. We’ve had many of our beloved staff move on, but
have also gained some fantastic new talent. Our sales are up, but our supply chain has
drastically changed. We no longer can rely on the support structure which we previously had,
but we now have expanded freedom and control over how we operate. So it is due to a wide
range of circumstances that Lyttel Piko is in need of restructuring.
We are currently investigating the viability of turning Lyttel Piko into a Community Owned
Co-Operative. This would mean that you, the customers of Lyttel Piko would be asked to buy
shares in a new Co-Operative and become its owners. This would generate much needed
capital for the shop which would help to pay off previous debt and secure funding for future
growth. For you, the customers, the benefits could include price breaks on selected items,
bulk buying discounts, member appreciation day discounts, access to workshops and
seminars, more open sharing of information, and potentially profit sharing. But more
importantly – you would have a direct say in how the shop is run. All members or owners
would have an equal vote on major issues and would elect a board of directors which would
steer and oversee the operations of the business.
Through our initial research we have come across several successful models for Co-Operatives
and need your feedback to understand what would be the best choices for us. We at Lyttel
Piko want to see this shop stay in Lyttelton serving this incredible community, but we will
need a lot of support to do it.
There are few ways that you can contribute right now. Firstly, fill out a survey on
www.surveymonkey.com/s/XGQNQY7 [if you need the old fashioned paper version stop by
the shop and that can be arranged]. This is of vital importance. It will help us understand
who our customers are, how we can serve them better, and what the viability of setting up a
Co-operative is.
Secondly, if you have the time, we are in dire need of some volunteer hours. Jobs like
packing, cleaning and shelf stocking are things that would help out immensely. Please stop by
or give us a call if you are interested. Even an hour here and there would be valuable.
Thank you again for all of your support over the last four years. We are excited about what
the future holds for our Lyttel shop and for this great community. By the way, 2012 has been
designated the International Year of the Co-Operative. Please keep your eyes and ears open
for some even bigger plans coming out of Project Lyttelton.
Organically yours, The Lyttel Piko Team

Potential Changes to Ferry Access Draft Lyttelton Master Plan
Diamond Harbour resident, Nancy Vance is encouraging Lyttelton Harbour residents and users
of the Lyttelton Harbour Ferry to consider the implications proposed by the Christchurch City
Council in the Draft Lyttelton Master Plan.
On page 25 of the Draft Lyttelton Master Plan, the Council has suggested that “the location of
the Diamond Harbour Ferry is a significant issue”. A submission made to the Proposed Draft
Lyttelton Master Plan by Black Cat Cruises strongly supports the relocation of the ferry service
to the western end of the Marina. While there is little further narrative in the Draft Lyttelton
Master Plan about the relocation of the Diamond Harbour Ferry service, it is fair to suggest
that if you are not comfortable with the ferry service moving from it’s current location, then
make a submission to Council expressing your concern or preference.
It would appear there is a real risk of the ferry terminal being moved to the western inner
harbour; over 1km walk from London Street. The current ferry terminal location at B Jetty
provides direct pedestrian access to the shops and services of London Street to residents in the
southern bays communities. B Jetty is also the location of significant historical events in
Canterbury's and New Zealand's cultural history - it is no coincidence that Pilgrim's Rock, the
Signal House, the Tug Lyttelton berth, the Antarctic Expeditions plaque and the Lyttelton
Historical Museum are all located around the B Jetty, Norwich Quay and Oxford Street.
This one last tiny piece of "public" waterfront access is in fact good urban design from a
transport and cultural history perspective. It would be a shame to loose it. Now is the time
to voice any concerns you may have. If you wish to make a submission to the Draft Lyttelton
Master Plan pertaining to the location of the ferry access between Lyttelton and Diamond
Harbour - please do! Submissions are due Monday, 19 December 2011.

While the Loons building is still closed - the building owners are chasing down some more

some theatre spaces around Christchurch over the next two months to be able to bring you
some of that Loons medicine you all know and love.

Living Springs Spring Update
Living Springs are celebrating the arrival of summer and longer days by running at full capacity
with residential camps and day program for schools from all areas of Christchurch, Kaikoura
and the West Coast. As the weather improves, so does the demand for their off-site activities
like multi day tramps and kayaking trips, and the Farm Park continues to be very popular with
schools, pre schools and birthday parties for groups up to 100 children and adults. The wed-
ding season is also now in full swing, with two beautiful weddings already held this year mak-
ing use of the scenic harbour vista as an amazing backdrop.
Living Springs have also been lucky to receive funding for several projects and wish to take this
opportunity to thank Transpower Community Trust for funding the 634 metre fence to start
the project to restore the native bush in a 35 hectare block. They would also like to thank
Christchurch City Council for funding new BalanzBikes, a great new activity; and to the Lion
Foundation for supporting the ongoing energy efficiency project; and to Skills Active for
sponsoring the outdoor first aid qualifications for our team.
What is new at Living Springs:
Living Springs have been working with a fully qualified swim instructor, Buffy Gilmore
(Just Buffs swim school) to offer swimming lessons in our indoor pool for pre-school and
school age children, from Term One. Details will be advertised soon.
Keep your children safe around the water this summer and send them on a water safety
course. We are running fun but informative 45 minute water safety courses for ages
5yrs and above on the mornings of Friday 16th December and Tuesday 24th
January. Details will be on the Living Springs web site and advertised through the local
schools, or call Living Springs 03 329 9788 for more information.
Living Springs are also now able to provide offsite catering for functions and events and
recently supplied a wonderful feast for Diamond Harbour Volunteer Fire brigade.
Don’t miss booking in for the Summer kids camp, January 8th-13th. To get more info
about that phone 03 329 9788.
