Dear Parents – The following message is for all parents from our LHS Administrative Intern, Henry Shaw - Lynnwood High School is well into another great year of academics, athletics, and arts. Our school builds its strength in all three based upon its outstanding students and their parents/ guardians. Parent involvement is an essential part of our school. Lynnwood HS has a new opportunity for our parents to participate in our learning community. For the last two years our school has convened a monthly Equity Team meeting to discuss issues of race, class, gender, and sexual orientation as they relate to our school. Lynnwood HS is firmly committed to be a welcoming and respectful place of learning for all students. The Equity Team, composed of staff, students, and parents addresses present and potential barriers to that commitment. We meet from 2:00pm to 3:00pm on the first Tuesday of every month. However, that time excludes many parents. Parent input is important at LHS. In order to encourage more parents to join our discussions, the Equity Team will have a second meeting from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on the first Tuesday of each month. It will be held in the classroom located directly above the main office, room SE 243. Your input is highly valued, so I encourage all interested parents or guardians to join us for some meaningful conversations about diversity and equity issues at LHS. Spanish language translators will be at each meeting. If you need other language translation services, please let me know and that will be accommodated. Our next meetings are Nov. 8 and December 6 in room SE 243 (directly above the main office). See you then. Henry Shaw Lynnwood High School Annual Blood Drive Our annual LHS Blood Drive will be held on November 22nd this year. We will begin registering donors at 7:15 a.m. and will continue registering do- nors until 1:30 p.m. Parents, siblings, and community members are wel- come to join us. You must be at least 16 years old (with parent per- mission) and weigh at least 114lbs for males or 125 pounds for female donors. Please call Amy Stevenson (425) 431-5239 with any questions. Lynnwood High School Close Up Trip to Washington, D.C. May 14-19

This spring LHS will take 10th, 11th, and 12th graders to Washington, D.C. with the Close Up program. All students are invited to attend.

Using the Nation’s Capital as a living classroom, this renowned program far transcends the physical boundaries that schools face as students get a “close up” experience with democracy in action. Delivering a curriculum that matches Lynnwood’s 11th and 12th grade history classes, the program’s hands-on learning methodology helps history and civics come alive. Over 500,000 students from all 50 states have met the program’s rigors and gone on to play key roles as leaders and ordinary citizens in the U.S. Democracy.

The program’s 6 days present many learning opportunities in a supportive environment led by outstanding faculty. Students make personal connections to historic places, events and people

while in Washington, D.C. While on our private tour of the Capitol building, students also meet with both Washington State Senators and our Congressman. Learning is enhanced because students live and learn among peers from all corners of our great country. Students from our district who went last year say the trip changed their lives and the way they understand our government. Over 95% of alums report that the program helped them better understand their roles as citizens and inspired them to become more active in their schools and communities.

Students are well chaperoned, have access to excellent medical care, if needed, and can earn 1 college credit from the University of Virginia.

Lynnwood students will leave on May 14th and will return on May 19th. If interested, please contact Mr. Henry Shaw at [email protected]. Details on the trip are available at Closeup.org. Tuition is all inclusive and is $1950.00. The deadline to sign up is January 3rd and must be accompanied by a $400 deposit.

their own funds for their class. We need volunteers to help on the following days; Dec 14th - Dec 24th (9:00 AM to 10:00 PM) The

more people that can help staff the booth on the days that the class of 2017 gets, the more money that we raise! If we are not

able to cover days that our class is assigned, then we have to give them up and we lose money! Contact Vicki Strong at
