Lynne Hagmeier The Kansas Troubles name has been familiar to

thousands of quilters and especially those of us from

Kansas. So it is especially exciting to have the creator

of Kansas Troubles Lynne Hagmeier, speak to us at

Guild and offer a workshop the following day. Lynn

has created hundreds of quilting patterns, published

2 dozen books (five in a series of historical quilts as

well as quilter’s journals) & designed over 50

collections of fabric with Moda.

Lynne learned to quilt over 25 years ago at a

local quilt shop in Salina, Kansas while working their part time. In 2000, Moda

fabrics offered Lynne an opportunity to design fabric for their growing company.

What a thrill for her to create a line of fabrics in exactly the colors you want and

then make a quilt she herself designed with that new fabric! In 2001 she and her

husband Robert sold their house and moved to a restored two-story brick building

in Lynne’s childhood hometown of Bennington, Ks, to expand her studio and offer

Quilting Getaways on the weekends. Lynne and Robert travel several times a year

to quilt shop and guilds across the country to offer programs and workshops from

her quilt books and patterns. Check out her books, patterns and teaching schedule

here. We have only a few openings in her workshop with us. http://

www.ktquilts.com/index.htm

Lynne and Robert have 6 grown children and 8 grandchildren to love and spoil.

Lynne is most generous with sharing her creative ideas with fellow quilters and you

can find free patterns on her website here. http://www.ktquilts.com/free-

patterns.htm

Meeting Location Due to ongoing construction work at the Senior Center, we are meeting at

the Scottish Rite Venue 332, 332 E. First Street, Wichita. (First and Topeka)

Free parking to the north of the building and along the street.

Paid parking across Topeka to the East.

Visitor Fee We have a $5 fee for

visitors to our meetings.

The fee does not apply to children.

With the temperatures we’ve been having this past

week, I think we can safely say that summer is indeed

upon us. I was hoping for spring this year, but we went

from winter right into summer.

Summertime as a child was always fun with water

balloon fights, swimming, camping and softball. Is it just

me or is it hotter, earlier every year? My AC has been on

for weeks. My family is gearing up for our Christmas va-

cation. We are renting a house in Shell Knob, MO for a

few days this month. 18 people in a 3400 sq ft home

should prove interesting. My hope is that it doesn’t end

up like a Chevy Chase Christmas vacation!!

Are you planning a vacation? If so I hope you have a

wonderful time and enjoy this great country of ours.

There are so many things to see and do. I have found a

neat website: www.Onlyinyourstate.com If you go to the

website you can click on any state, sign up for the news-

letter for the states you plan to visit and find out about

hidden gems that you may not have even heard about.

They might even be near a quilt shop, you never know!

Are your quilts all ready for the quilt show? Are they

labeled? Have you put on the sleeve? It will be here be-

fore you know it. Have you signed up to be a volunteer at

the show? Remember, the quilt show proceeds pay for

our speakers and venue rental for the next two years. It

takes many hands to pull this thing off properly. Please

sign up and do your part to make this our best show ever.

Have you turned in your mini quilt for the Mini Quilt

Auction? The monies raised go for the grants given for

the next two years to promote the teaching of quilting.

Maybe you have an idea for teaching a group to quilt. Go

to our website and fill out an application to be considered

for a grant. It’s really easy to fill out. Just think, you

could be teaching the next generation of quilters who will

win at Houston someday.

This is our birthday month. Prairie Quilt Guild was

started in June of 1982. We are celebrating our 36th

birthday. Oh to be 36 again. Maybe then I could get

more quilting done. What started with just about a hun-

dred members has grown to nearly 600 today. We have

Parking At the Meeting You have probably noticed that parking is limited at the

Scottish Rite! Some options:

• Organize a carpool with friends

• Park across Topeka Street, but please remember to

pay the $2 fee for your parking space as the fine is

$25 (more than year of $2 fees)!

We are working on other solutions, but for now sharing

the ride is probably our best option.

our founding members to thank for this group of talent-

ed folks getting together each month to continue to learn

about quilting. We have come so far in the quilting

world. New methods of doing things has helped me get

more of my bucket list done. How about you? Are you

checking things off your bucket list?

Have a great summer. See you at Guild June 12th.

Directions for Finishing QuiltSetting Pinwheel Blocks: (6 blocks)

Cut 12 – 4” squares – background

(light) fabric

Cut 12 – 4” squares – color (dark) fabric

Draw a diagonal line on light fabric.

Place 1 light and 1 dark fabric, right sides together. Sew on each

side of diagonal line. Cut on diagonal line. Trim to 3 ½ ”. Make

24 half-square triangle units. Use 4 units for each block to form

center pinwheel.

Cut 12 – 3 ½” x 6 ½ “ strips – light (background) fabric

Cut 12 – 3 ½ “ x 12 ½” strips – light (background) fabric

Attach 3 ½ ” x 6 ½ ” strips to opposite sides of pinwheel

block. Press towards strip.

Attach 3 ½ ” x 12 ½ ” strips to opposite sides of pinwheel/

strip block. Press towards outside strip. Make 6.

Accent squares: (feature fabric) – cut 14 – 12 ½ ” squares.

Setting triangles: You may use the same fabric as the back-

ground, or you may choose a complimentary color (I used the

same dark fabric that I used in my pinwheel blocks).

Cut 4 – 18 ½ ” blocks – cut each twice diagonally.

You will use 14 triangles (2 will be extra).

Corner triangles – 9 ½ “blocks – cut

each one diagonally.

The access & corner blocks are slightly oversized and will be

trimmed when quilt is finished. (If using a different size block,

you may find charts on the internet for different sizes).

Lay out the triangles and corners with your blocks. Begin

sewing the quilt into rows starting at one corner. Your first row

will have one corner block, two large setting “wing” triangles,

and the corner triangle. Your second row will have three blocks,

two wing triangles…etc. Each row will get larger as you get to

the center of the quilt. I assembled the quilt rows together from

each corner until there were two halves of the top….then sewed

the two halves together in one long seam.

After the top is together, use your ruler and rotary cutter to

trim the edge of the quilt ¼” away from the corners of the

blocks at the quilt top edge. This gets rid of all the dog ears

from sewing the rows together too.

Charity Quilts

Quilting Buddies

Since many of us are finishing up last minute details

for the Quilt Show, I thought I would take this time to

share some lighthearted reading. I’ll take a break this

month and get back to bugging everyone to work on a

charity quilt after the show.

This month, I would like introduce my quilting buddy.

This is my cat, Felix.

I’m sure many of you have a pet that enjoys your

sewing almost as much as you. They are good company,

never complain about the pattern you choose, don’t fuss

over color combinations, and they aren’t picky about

your stitching.

When Felix knows I’m headed to my sewing room or

hears the hum of the sewing machine, he comes saunter-

ing in to check out my latest project. His favorite way to

help is to “knead bread” to check the loftiness of the lay-

ering! Many times, he’ll find a quilt piled up on a bed,

make a nest and take a cat nap. He even has his own

“cat quilt” that he sleeps on at night. But while I’m

cutting, sewing or ironing, he enjoys hanging out with

me. He’ll watch intently or provide amusement by play-

ing with loose threads.

Whether it’s our pet, spouse, friend or bee group, it’s

great to have a quilting buddy (as well as be one to some-

body else). Quilting buddies bounce ideas off each other,

encourage each other and provide comfort when that

project just doesn’t turn out like you expected.

Happy Quilting!
